1.
Sorry ........no. There are no misunderstandings. You made your point very clearly.
I know I made my point clearly. Which was that I wasn't going to take any nonsense from you. I'd prefer to do this by PM, but you've shut that option down. To reiterate my PM's closing observation, I value some of your views and you make some worthwhile points, but getting into rows with members because they advance an alternative point of view is going to limit your enjoyment of the forum. It is just not on to close down a contrary opinion or parallel discussion by deeming it 'off topic'. And slapping people for disagreeing and quoting wadges of manufacturer's manual in support of your contentions isn't going to help any of us. FFS, I agree with you that the Peterson's a fine tuner. I agree with your opinion. Please accept that for what it's worth. But I'm not going to sit still while you wander round this forum telling people that their opinion is bollocks and if, as with my PM, you want to threaten to report me to the mods for posting this sentiment, go right ahead.
2.
I got a couple of emails from "supporters" asking me not to concede to the dickheads on here. Which I thought was good advice.
Since you've changed your mind about posting on this thread, any chance of taking me off your PM block list so we can sort out any misunderstandings?
3.
Thinking about the way in which some cabinet manufacturers make questionable claims about their cabs sensitivity, unless anyone here has subjected all these tuners to independent bench testing, are we being sucked just a little bit into the manufacturers hype about their own products?
The still, small voice of reason.
4. The Peterson Strobe (in all its glorious forms) is probably the best affordable tuner out there and, in conjuction with the Buzz Feiten Tuning System, affords much more 'pleasing' intonation. In virtually every instance better than a cheap ref tuner. That said, similar, but less effective, benefits can be achieved by manually offsetting the intonation by a few cents either way.
5. Reaper (free unlimited trial / cheap to buy) + a USB audio interface (£50-150 new). Some free plug ins and maybe use your audacity to master. Spend the rest of your budget on beer.
6. Hi and welcome Good luck with the band. There's a strong Scots contingent on here - you'll soon spot them!
7.
What's wrong with good old fashioned guess work?
That just ends in Jazz. Y'see, it's all "ha-ha, fun and games" till the monkey bites you in the eye.
8. Not much use for gigs, but great for set-ups and studio. Lots of features, it's free to trial (in perpetuity ) and you can scale the screen as large as you like. http://www.aptuner.com Tried a strobostomp. It was OK, I s'pose.
9. Def sticky-worthy. This man's a Prince.
10. After I bought my first guitar, this kid from school said "You won't be any good at that. Your fingers are too fat". My immediate urge was to prove him wrong. I did, but it took a few years.
11. As a matter of interest, what sort of music do you play, how loud is your band and what sort of head will you be putting through the cab? Do tell - this might seriously influence your choice of cab.
12. That, Sir, is a peach of a Rick and possibly worth considerably more than the basses you're willing to trade for. Good luck with your sale and have a swift Friday BUMP.
13. Here's an interesting article about online sales and how the idea of the internet as a great leveller is a myth: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/05/13/long_tail_p2p/
14. ...or a tatty but well-sorted 78 Pro Reverb + cash? Delivered to your door.
15. Can't speak for reggae or jazz, but blues-wise, I find the P gives you a classic plonky, uncluttered tone that I think sounds good in a band with multiple front-line instruments - e.g. two guitars, keys, and / or brass. That said, I prefer a Jazz, particularly in smaller outfits, fills out a bit more. Neck pick-up full on, bridge rolled back a little bit, tone likewise. Warm and yummy.
16.
The term "chops" comes from horn players, as far as I know - it refers to their cheeks and so forth because of the muscles that you develop in your face as a horn player. The better your chops are, the better you play!
H'mmm. I rather think it refers to pianists who can play "Chopsticks" very, very quickly. Possibly. Or not. Apropos nothing - is it acceptable, when in polite company, to "shred" while in the shed? Would this be Shed-Shredding or Shred-Shedding?
17.
...do you "fancy a hang later?".
Gallows without piffle-speaking bass guitar mag journalist....looks so wrong
18. That said, Brit guitar mags always go about 'bags of sustain'. Would that be a Sainsbury's bag? A Gladstone bag? Or one of those little handbags French blokes used to carry? Frenchman without handbag...looks so wrong
19.
My fave Yank word in music is 'Shedding'.......
...as in "shedding any desire to communicate like an adult" I offer you: "Tonemeister" "Maven of Metal" "Dialling in my signature sound" "Spanking my axe" "Hammering my awesome, blazing chops into the sticksman's pocket"* * I made that last one up. Sorry.
20. That post by Teej is about the most sensible thing I've read this year. Kudos to him.
21. Elixirs work fine for me...horses for courses I s'pose. Slightly less zingy in isolation. When played next to a kit, I can't really hear the difference. Usually leave them on for about 6-9 months depending on frequency. One set stayed on a practice bass for about 5 years!
22. To be fair, the current 'DIY, shop it around' approach isn't entirely new / revolutionary. In 1968, Jimmy Page and Peter Grant put up about £2,500 of their own cash to record the first Zep album while touring the outfit as 'The New Yardbirds'. Grant used the tapes to close a five album, £200,000 deal with Atlantic at a previously unheard of royalty rate, while retaining complete artistic control, including album covers and marketing approval. That would be about £25k and £2,056,000 today. Either way, the old adage holds true. Find out what people want then sell it to them on your terms. Long live the independent approach
