He has the most awesome slap technique on the planet, so why not show it off once in a while?
I dispute that. My Missus has the most awesome slap technique. Nearly took a tooth out once. As regards the rest of this indignant little rant, here's a life lesson: Not everyone likes the same things and wildly slagging people off for showing insufficient respect to one's heroes makes one look a bit silly. Particularly if the endeavour in question is the fairly trivial ability to master a particular bass guitar style; compared, say, to bringing peace to the Middle East, or finding a cure for cancer.
I've used a VBA and their new 4x12" a few times at a rehearsal complex (Survival Studios anyone?) and have never been impressed with the sound with any of my basses through it. As pointed out earlier it's totally a horses for courses situation.
Horses for courses indeed - the VBA whose tone I liked and referenced above was at ...er...Survival! We've probably played exactly the same amp
but IMO Marshall's bass amps are a poor effort considering they do so well with their guitar amps
...and that's the truth. At this stage in Marshall's history, what's the point in investing cash in breaking new-ish ground in a sector they've never dominated. And the same goes for Fender...
I dispute that. It's nothing to do with the speed of sound in the string. If I remember correctly it's to do with the mass of the string/unit length and the force produced by the displacement of the string by plucking, i.e good old Newton's laws of force, mass, and acceleration. Please correct me if I'm wrong (it's been 30 years since my Physics degree).
It's 30 years since my drama degree, but I'm inclined to agree with you. I wasn't aware that sound travelled within the string But clearly tension and mass have a bit to do with how a string sounds and plays.

Never played a DBS 7400 (if my memory serves me) but they get a good rap (as above) and sometimes go for big money. Used a VBA in a rhsal studio for months and it had a very nice tone. Trouble was it was part of an early, bug-ridden production run and kept crapping out like the other 3 the studio had bought. Also ludicrously heavy and about a million valves to replace. As regards the MB's, only used one once and it just sounded like any other budget rig - didn't seem to sound very Marshall-y. Marshall did themselves no favours some years ago - the problems experienced with the VBA's extended to the DSL and TSL guitar heads - IIRC, heat issues causing the boards to bend a bit and cold solder joint problems. Frankly, they've been lucky to get away with their rep even partially intact, particularly if we recall some of the other horrible tranny heads they've inflicted on the bass community. Funny, because the valve-state guitar heads weren't that bad - for the money. I just think it's not a big part of their business and they're not that interested.

Not sure what you mean by 'Gain'? More distorted? More compressed? (I notice you're not running an external compressor in that chain). Louder (or apparently louder)? An ampeg will give a bit of a different tone compared to your mag and may be marginally louder. A sansamp will help to add some different color to your tone. You may also get a different sort of tone by running your ODB3 with more distortion and / or output, your amp input gain lower and your output volume higher. Sometimes, if it's a certain sound you're after, it may be other components in the chain that need changing, such as the bass, the pedals or the cabs.

Fender. Goes domp. Seen everywhere, loved by some, spurned by others. And to those who'd infer I'm one of 'the herd', I say a big 'Moo' to you.

Hang on, I'm havin' a deja vu. You posted about this on May 1 - The original thread was moved to gear porn here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=47906 And it's still a lovely rickenfaker. Cheers

No doubt Mr Wooten's got monster technique and supplies some lovely basslines to songs. However... ... solo bass (and bass solos) do not excite me or bring pleasure into my life.

You lucky man. I have a bad case of N V

Hi Huw - welcome to the forum! Yes, folk here pretty friendly, but flame wars can and do erupt occasionally NB - Use of a pick is not prohibited and recent consensus here suggests (1) that whatever works for you is good, and (2) fingers and pick all have their uses, depending on the circumstances. As for the band name, it doesn't matter what you're called - all band names are crap till they get successful. In any case, I've heard worse than 'A Guy Called Guy' - there's an old thread somewhere on here about 'worst name for a band that you've been in' - search it out and enjoy!

Reliced basses - what's the attraction?
skankdelvar replied to Twigman's topic in General Discussion
It's all a bagatelle - for example, some commonly held views: Refinished classic cars = good Refinished antiques = bad Aged repro furniture = good Aged modern furniture = bad Refinished classic clothing = bad Refinished vintage guitars = bad Aged repro Guitars = big debate Paying for aged repro guitar with aged repro £20 notes = Jail sentence -
Reliced basses - what's the attraction?
skankdelvar replied to Twigman's topic in General Discussion
The simple reason that people buy relics is that they want to buy relics and manufacturers are happy to oblige. On closer scrutiny, there are many reasons which have been re-hashed before on this forum ad tedium. Beyond the simple functional issue of attempting to reproduce the playability of vintage instruments (e.g. rolling the fingerboard edges) or replicating 'tone', or keeping expensive vintage items out of the hands of gig thieves, lie the problematic areas of self-actualisation, self-image and transference of hero virtues. Let's not go there. But I'd ask myself why some people find it so strange that other people buy relics. Why do some people buy Warwicks and others buy Fenders? Why do some people like Jazz and others like Punk? In the end, it's just a matter of choice and no biggie. -
I'm there, dude. Auf wiedersehen!
Bitte schon, Mein Herr.
I just don't buy into the idea that music only matters if it's making money for someone, or has a wide appeal or a cool image. To me those are completely irrelevant to what makes good music.
Absolutely right. World of difference between what's commercially successful and what some of us would consider is good. Lots of people buy music we might think is 'bad'. But I'd rather they bought 'bad' music than no music at all.

In support of my earlier contentions, I reproduce this image of the (late) legendary Jazz DJ, Al 'Jazzbeaux' Collins without comment: Big fan of Asparagus... and other foodstuffs
....a mouthful of asparagus....
I like Asparagus. But as Francis Albert Sinatra once said: "Asparagus is the vilest and most soul-less form of food. It is mostly eaten by crass, thuggish Rock & Rollers with greasy sideburns and you know what I think about them". Let's not permit this thread descend into Asparagus Good - Asparagus Bad, what's good, what's bad, define good, my opinion, IMHO, is my opinion, I defend your right but, etc, etc, continued page 94 (that's enough guys, locked thread) It's all very simple, but for those of us who don't get it, here's the deal in plain English * There is no good and bad Asparagus * There is commercially successful Asparagus * There is Asparagus which used to be commercially successful but isn't anymore * Jazz is a form of Asparagus which used to be commercially successful but isn't [s]anymore[/s] as successful as it used to be * The French call it Asperges * Aspergers syndrome has nothing to do with Jazz * Jazz mags are sometimes not about Jazz or Asparagus I thang Yew
