1. My 2p. Fold them up and put them in storage. Unlikely though it may be, someone may think you are genuinely associating yourselves with certain sections of the US population who espouse unpleasant and / or unfashionable views. Which you clearly are not. If you want to ensure a complete lack of controversy display the Canadian flag. Everyone loves the Canadians.
2. Good for you, Sir. Hope you have a lovely time
3. In a blues three-piece I try to keep the pulse while pushing the bass more into the foreground, little embellishments that sort of thing. In bigger outfits I fade into the background and keep it ridiculously simple. For three-piece R&B (the British pub variety) or Blues Rock I either hammer the roots or support the riffs. On occasion I've gone batsh*t crazy and harmonised riff intros or endings (e.g. Rory's version of Messing with the Kid) but only by prior agreement; some guitarists can experience alarm and nausea when you whip away their foundation. Full-on solo? Never been asked and I'd politely decline if I were
4. Threads like this reinforce my opinion that we should all learn how to do a basic set up. It's easy enough to do if one follows the guidelines, everything is reversable, there's loads of YT vids and a fantastic knowledge base here on BC. Most of us have (most) of the basic tools in the kitchen drawer while Allen keys, radius gauges and truss rod adjusters are cheap enough on the web.
5.
Unless your name is Sting, Paul McCartney, Mark King, Phil Lynott or Lemmy.
Or - indeed - Steve Harris, Gene Simmons, Geezer Butler, Geddy Lee, Dee Dee Ramone or Roger Waters. But I think you know what I mean
6. Asking bass players to opine about covers vs originals is often a fruitless exercise, seeing as they are mostly playing other peoples' songs either way.
7. Probably just me but I could never get a sound I liked.
8.
Thanks for all the infos, guys! 'It looks old but - no offence to owner - this might be a late 60's (???) or 70's Japanese copy.' Bass was used in sixties.
Then it's probably a 60's Japanese copy of a Hofner.
9. I'm no expert but there are a few things which can be seen if compared with a 60's Hofner, pre or post 1968: * Pick-ups resemble the 1963-64 511 small frame but the screw-head pole pieces are a bit large. * Closed back tuners with metal heads as here were introduced in 1968. Difficult to tell from images but face of tuner casings looks a bit flat rather than curved. Trapezoid shape to tuner knobs compared to Kolbs which have six sides like the old Fender / Schaller tuners * Neck heel - binding does not continue across leading edge * Bolt on neck with no neck binding * Body binding - but no thin inner black line / pinstripe It looks old but - no offence to owner - this might be a late 60's (???) or 70's Japanese copy. Even so, it's a pretty little bass
10. On a serious note (badum-tish) if I ever went back to Country I think I'd string a P up as B-E-A-D. It might make root-fiving in E and G a bit more convincing.
11. At least two of my acquaintances have suffered from batsh*t-crazy partner instrument destruction syndrome. One saw three of his guitars (including an original Thinline Tele) go out the window. He left her. The other likewise saw his HH bass combo (the old one the size of a washing machine) succumb to gravitational force. "I'm amazed," he said to me afterwards. "She's only a little woman but she managed to get that thing over the window sill all on her own".
12. Ah! It's the annual Basschat 'no pay, no play vs. doing it for the peeple and the art' bunfight. Whoopee f*cking doo.
13. * At the gig, play the song the way the others want you to play it. * Wait for someone to come up to you afterwards and say 'Eck-skewse may, chief, yow played the baize loine rong'. * Refer him to your band mates * Observe events from a distance while sipping on a beverage of your choice
14. That's a serious bargain there, people. V. useful for making new loops for Watkins Copicats and other tape delays. GLWTS
15.
... and even the parsley is wilting in this heat. What are we to eat, eh..? And there's me, partial to a nice shamisen pie.
Y'know, all this talk of braised gayageum and shamisen pie has got me thinking about dinner. In any event, if people keep suggesting the thread title contains a terminological inexactitude I shall re-purpose it as 'XXX Hot Korean Chick Strums On Her Gayageum XXX'.
16. I used the term fretless Korean zither in the thread title because the esoteric nature of the word 'gayageum' would have had people assuming it was about playing La Grange on a vegetable. e.g
Yes, but different , and without the hammers ... anyway it's time to go and water my radishes and gayageums which are looking quite floriferous (?) this year ... which might be bad because too many flowers take all the growth away from the roots and that's the bit of the gayageum that you eat ... braised in butter with a garnish of parsley (
17.
I've been practicing my stage stuff at home, down to details like when to use certain hand jestures to when and where I alter my position on stage. Blue
18. Rips the lead solo at 1:10
19. This guy has a slightly different take with a G>G# hammer on http://youtu.be/hF0bVGbaHRM
20. I strung my bass up with a set of Elixirs a while ago. They've lost a bit of zing and they're a bit flaky from the pick but they're not bad for 11 years use.
21. Croikey! I only just spotted this thread. Belated congratulations, you pair of scamps
22.
Don't let Norman borrow your lead! He finishes every gig by unplugging and then dropping his lead into a large puddle of sweat ...
IIRC, Norman sometimes travels without an amp. Be prepared to share your rig* (* normal BassChat rig sharing rules do not apply )
23.
Not sure what this thread is about. Does it or will it feature real band adverts or what?
Yes, they're real. Though there may be something to be said for a thread deconstructing fake band adverts. Sort of like a training camp before one gets into deconstructing real band adverts.
