The article oversimplifies the prevailing situation. While electric guitar sales are down, Gibson, Fender, Guitar Center (sic) and PRS each have problems which are unrelated (or at least tangential) to the global market. * As is well documented, Gibson have been all over the place for the last ten years or so. Poor QC, weird designs, failed attempts at MIDI and self-tuning guitars. Many attribute this to Henry Juskiewicz and his erratic management style * Fender are labouring under the dual burden of (i) an over-diverse range and (ii) weak financials caused in part by an over-reliance on sales to Guitar Center. The latter is because the hedge fund that owns part of Fender also owns a slab of Guitar Center and encouraged a risky deal between the two companies. Additionally, Fender have been dragged off course by a weak attempt at brand diversification - headphones, music players etc. Also, having Bono on the company's board may be a mixed blessing. * Encouraged by their hedge fund owners Guitar Centre basically bought in tons of stuff and got caught by a declining market, dragging Fender with them * PRS have long occupied a narrow position between the Big Two. Despite enjoying success with the SE range have found it difficult to break into in the mid-market. They also have a challenge expanding their offering beyond the classic PRS shape, see the Mira, Darla and Vela. Their PRS amps and acoustic guitars haven't exactly set the world on fire. Nevertheless, there are some bright spots out there. Chris 'the nicest man in the industry' Martin recently saw his company produce their two millionth acoustic guitar. It was a bit blingy for my taste but fair play to him.

I find these threads useful and informative. Not entirely sure why this thread in particular seems to have set a few people off. Perhaps they might profit from a quick re-read of the thread. The comments about the ad are - as is often the case - fairly respectful and exhibit a speculative curiosity. No 'bitching' or 'slagging' afaics. I'd be asking about those covers. * "We all write" doesn't necessarily mean the bass player has to write but I'd ask about that too. * Not specifying an age suggests they're somewhere in the 25-50 bracket * 'No attitudes, egos or weirdness' could be a description of the current band members [u]or[/u] a warning that weird attitudinal egotists are [i]persona non grata[/i]. Learning a song's basic structure / chords etc and sticking to the plan is about the most basic requirement for a covers band playing to an audience that anticipates familiarity with the material. In this context, [i]accidentally[/i] cocking up changes, bridges, endings etc is an absolute no-no. Yes, in a different context like blues covers other rules may apply but unless the band has jointly agreed to pursue an improvisational approach there's no creative excuse for winging it. I briefly worked with a guitarist and singer duo who sought a rhythm section. Every week the guitarist winged different arrangements while the singer stuck rigidly to the lyrics she was reading off her smart-phone. Neither of them listened to each other and each rehearsal was a total car crash. I lasted three weeks which is about as long as I'd last in the OP's band. Let's be clear: people who play in a band but through laziness (or ego) can't be bothered to learn the arrangements should be lured to a deserted warehouse and shot in the face. Bob Mould (Husker Du, Sugar) layers the sh*t out of guitars on his recordings but manages to get a reasonably full sound in a live three-piece context, in part by slipping single line hooks in between basic rhythm chords. Yes, it's weird. Particularly if it's strangers or members of the public who are doing the asking I mean, I could understand other band members enquiring if one's other half might attend an upcoming gig (possibly in the forlorn hope of boosting attendance). On one occasion a front man began to insist rather strenuously that I encourage her to come along and I had to shut him down fairly ruthlessly. Funnily enough, the last time SWMBO came along it was because the gig was about 100 yds from the house of one of her little friends who thought it would make for a nice girls' night out, a groundless belief of which she was swiftly disavowed when - as was his wont - The Guitard unleashed the fury through his JCM800 half stack. I think that was 17 years ago. How time flies.
