1. The article oversimplifies the prevailing situation. While electric guitar sales are down, Gibson, Fender, Guitar Center (sic) and PRS each have problems which are unrelated (or at least tangential) to the global market. * As is well documented, Gibson have been all over the place for the last ten years or so. Poor QC, weird designs, failed attempts at MIDI and self-tuning guitars. Many attribute this to Henry Juskiewicz and his erratic management style * Fender are labouring under the dual burden of (i) an over-diverse range and (ii) weak financials caused in part by an over-reliance on sales to Guitar Center. The latter is because the hedge fund that owns part of Fender also owns a slab of Guitar Center and encouraged a risky deal between the two companies. Additionally, Fender have been dragged off course by a weak attempt at brand diversification - headphones, music players etc. Also, having Bono on the company's board may be a mixed blessing. * Encouraged by their hedge fund owners Guitar Centre basically bought in tons of stuff and got caught by a declining market, dragging Fender with them * PRS have long occupied a narrow position between the Big Two. Despite enjoying success with the SE range have found it difficult to break into in the mid-market. They also have a challenge expanding their offering beyond the classic PRS shape, see the Mira, Darla and Vela. Their PRS amps and acoustic guitars haven't exactly set the world on fire. Nevertheless, there are some bright spots out there. Chris 'the nicest man in the industry' Martin recently saw his company produce their two millionth acoustic guitar. It was a bit blingy for my taste but fair play to him.
 2. I find these threads useful and informative. Not entirely sure why this thread in particular seems to have set a few people off. Perhaps they might profit from a quick re-read of the thread. The comments about the ad are - as is often the case - fairly respectful and exhibit a speculative curiosity. No 'bitching' or 'slagging' afaics. Anyway: * They're an originals band that supplement the self-penned stuff with some covers. I'd be asking about those covers. * "We all write" doesn't necessarily mean the bass player has to write but I'd ask about that too. * Not specifying an age suggests they're somewhere in the 25-50 bracket * 'No attitudes, egos or weirdness' could be a description of the current band members or a warning that weird attitudinal egotists are persona non grata. That's me f*cked, then
 3.
If he thinks that being able to count up to 4 is "elitist" then I wouldn't hold out too much hope for him
I once worked with a drummer who thought it was 'elitist' of the rest of us to agree on the keys and chord progressions for the songs we played. He thought it was 'showing off'.

 5. Just lock into the drummer, zone out and do that Dusty Hill side-to-side swaying thing you do so well
 6.
Would you be interested in trading your ticket to Mr Jerky Derky's magical prefab of delights for my Sue Ryder P bass, secondhand, mint with some minor axe marks and bloodstains, plays like butter?
Jerry Dross ticket gone on ebay and sold, soz. Have The Victor Annual 1967 / Goblin Teasmaid / Cabinet Post in Macron Government. Swore I'd never sell these, best I've ever had. All including orig box, manual, leads. No offers. Couriered at cost to UK only, no foreign riff-raff.
 7.
Ahem...
I know - he's dead. Just saying, I'd rather spend (have spent?) time in a rehearsal room with him than with that mean-spirited bastard Rossi. Who didn't even name-check Parfitt at Quo's first gig out after his death.
very true. Although the first comparison, would you rather work with a highly-strung Jeff Beck or a highly-strung out Ronnie Wood?
Tough call. I'll get back to you. .
 8. Mr Blue nails it again. I mean, who would one rather work with? Ronnie Wood or the highly-strung Jeff Beck? Rick Parfitt or grouchy old Francis Rossi? The unassuming, biddable Mr Frank Sampedro or his cranky, nitpicking boss Mr Neil Young? Quod erat demonstrandum.
 9.
If you play A at 440Hz, and then play a perfect fifth above it you get an E at 660Hz. The ratio E:A is 660:440 = 3:2 = 1.5:1
That's nice. Quite chewy. Good value at £6.99
If you play A at 432Hz, and then play a perfect fifth above it you get an E at 648Hz. The ratio E:A is 648:432 = 3:2 = 1.5:1
That not so much. Restrained nose, hint of raspberry and autumn leaves but an understated finish.
 10.
100 Euro was £85 when you typed that. It's £87 now. £88. £91. EDIT. £94.
£84.99 £84.98 £84.975 £84.977 Edit: Due to time-waster still have magic ticket for Jerry Dross's bouncy castle will swap for Jim Deacon bass or WHY drives superb
 11. * Sacked by pop metal band for being too bluesy. Fair cop. * Sacked by 'hard-working' covers band for shagging agent's wife. Fair cop. * Sacked from blues band for suggesting front-woman guitarist would look good in a hat. I was only being nice.
 12. The marvellous thing about the exquisitely bejewelled Mr Jerry Dross is that once you've passed his 10 page test and applied to become a client he will graciously schedule a preliminary meeting at his workshop on payment of a fee of 100 Euro* (click add to cart button / * Refunded if order placed within 12 mths). Bargain! £85 for an audience with His Majesty to discuss what you'd like and how much he'll charge you. Yes, I'm being impertinent to one of the Great Artists of our age or any other era in human history. But that's the way we roll in Brandoni-land, motherf*ckers. .
 13. A chum in Worcestershire just tipped me off about this. Short notice but there you go. Bass legend Neil Murray (Whitesnake, Sabbath, Brian May, Michael Schenker, Queen, Gary Moore) is holding a bass masterclass at the Swan in Stourport on Severn, Worcestershire - Tuesday May 2nd. Neil will talk about his career, demonstrate some of the lines that made him one of the most sought-after bassists in the country and share advice from his life in music. Also music by Ley Lines featuring Andy Edwards (Robert Plant, Frost) Phi Yaan-Zek and Steve Lawson. Free Entry - Starts 7PM. 14.
No strong feelings there then
It's the only language they understand. I mean, imagine a world where people turn up for rehearsals and actually know the songs and play the right thing at the right time. It's just a question of motivation
 15. Learning a song's basic structure / chords etc and sticking to the plan is about the most basic requirement for a covers band playing to an audience that anticipates familiarity with the material. In this context, accidentally cocking up changes, bridges, endings etc is an absolute no-no. Yes, in a different context like blues covers other rules may apply but unless the band has jointly agreed to pursue an improvisational approach there's no creative excuse for winging it. I briefly worked with a guitarist and singer duo who sought a rhythm section. Every week the guitarist winged different arrangements while the singer stuck rigidly to the lyrics she was reading off her smart-phone. Neither of them listened to each other and each rehearsal was a total car crash. I lasted three weeks which is about as long as I'd last in the OP's band. Let's be clear: people who play in a band but through laziness (or ego) can't be bothered to learn the arrangements should be lured to a deserted warehouse and shot in the face. 16.
Isn't there a Goggle-Eyed Git?
Yes, there is. He's currently writing his memoirs, such recall as he retains being assisted by a tantric head massage and a quart bottle of jagermeister.
 17. Bob Mould (Husker Du, Sugar) layers the sh*t out of guitars on his recordings but manages to get a reasonably full sound in a live three-piece context, in part by slipping single line hooks in between basic rhythm chords. See below:
 18.
... it has saved me hours of dull conversation with guitar geeks.
Likewise. Explaining that mine is a cheap Brandoni kit-built Jazz with an inexpertly applied coat of beige floor paint is an undertaking I am no longer prepared to make.
 19.
@Skank ...and Lady Gaga. You missed Lady Gaga. (A wasp, apparently. Along with several other creatures.)
For myself, Lady Gaga is less a musician, more a framework from which to dangle bacon-y haute couture. But I'll take it under advisement Most disappointing about the whole fol-de-rol is the predictable prominence of front-men at the expense of bass players, in particular the absence of Mr Tony Goggle; a candidate for a cockroach if ever there was.
 20. Frank Sinatra, Sepultura, Paul McCartney, Brian Eno, Biffy Clyro, Keith Richards, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Pearl Jam, Michael Jackson, Neil Young, Miles Davis, Metallica, Lou Reed, Angus Young, Malcolm Young, Green Day, Joey Ramone, Johnny Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone, C J Ramone, Green Day, Lemmy, Sting, Dolly Parton, Elton John, Jagger, Bowie, Shakira, Joe Strummer, Carole King James Taylor, Doc Watson, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Bono, Johnny Rotten, Paul Cook, Steve Jones, Sid Vicious, Glen Matlock, Henry Rollins, John Lennon, The Beatles, Beethoven, Mozart, Jim Morrison, Freddy Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon, Roger Taylor, Jerry Garcia, The Grateful Dead, Ozzy Osbourne, Chopin, Bob Marley all have organisms named after them. Top organism muso is Frank Zappa with nine of the little buggers named after him. Which says more about scientists than it does about Zappa, imo.
 21.
sure - but who added them ? I dont see any on their site with them
When Limelight (Mark Richards) first started selling his clones they were supplied with Fender decals. Limelight ceased offering the option after a shouty thread here on BC about fake decals and issues of legality. They now sell them with a bare headstock.
 22.
Far Canal. I never realised that Bill MacCormick's brother was actually Ian MacDonald!
Neither did I. (At first I thought you meant Ian McDonald the saxophonical proggist. But no.)

 24. Yes, it's weird. Particularly if it's strangers or members of the public who are doing the asking I mean, I could understand other band members enquiring if one's other half might attend an upcoming gig (possibly in the forlorn hope of boosting attendance). On one occasion a front man began to insist rather strenuously that I encourage her to come along and I had to shut him down fairly ruthlessly. Funnily enough, the last time SWMBO came along it was because the gig was about 100 yds from the house of one of her little friends who thought it would make for a nice girls' night out, a groundless belief of which she was swiftly disavowed when - as was his wont - The Guitard unleashed the fury through his JCM800 half stack. I think that was 17 years ago. How time flies.
