Go to the Warwick website and enter the serial number, it'll tell you exactly what it is, then search for it on ebay and the FS forums here and you'll get an idea of the current selling price.

Sounds like a way of trying to encourage bands to do more than just show up on the night.

You can take a chance on solid bodied basses which are supposedly lighter or if you want a guaranteed lighter bass but you like the feel of the one you have, buy a chambered body and fit your existing parts to it, maybe add a set of Hipshot ultralight tuners too. Well... my most played bass, I've had and played for almost 20 years, I filed the nut down so the strings were as low as a zero fret and it's still the original nut with - I would say - entirely unnoticable wear after all this time.

If you maybe tuned up and down aggressively for an hour ever day so the string acted like a file, then maybe, but that's highly unlikely.

I yearned for a 4003 from the moment I started playing bass and eventually saved up and got one. I loved the looks, I loved the tone and I spent a long time setting it up just right (including filing down the nut slots). The greatest compliment I ever had was from a guy in a bar where we played in the basement and he was on the ground floor - [i]"I couldn't hear the band but I could feel your bass!"[/i] but it was just too uncomfortable to play (no forearm contour, that stupid pickup mount with it's insanely sharp edge) so I sold it on after a few years. I don't feel bad about it anymore, though every time I see one I still want one but then I remember those huge bruises on my forearm after long gigs and the GAS goes away. It's still the most evocative bass shape there is.

I wonder when they get on to the 80's will they start reissuing reissues?

If you think it'd be easier to play a whole set with one finger permanently clamped to the third fret, that's admirable to put it mildly, but personally I'd just go with the flow and tune to match. Life's to short for tendonitis I speak as someone who has been in this situation in the past

Even then, if you can find a way to play them, they'll sound awful if you can't work off the open string in the same way as the guitar.

Maybe a set of Elixirs to cut down on friction from the string too.

Most Metal bands are based around largely shadowing what the guitar is doing (not saying that's right or wrong, just saying), re-enforcing the rhythmic power of the riffs. There is scope to branch out and be adventurous but if you're not holding it down first then it will be noticed. Concentrate on being tight with the drums and playing powerfully first and flamboyant second. You shouldn't be purely just mimicking the rhythm guitar but, for an audition, that's where my starting point would be. Let them know you can nail it tight first, then show them how expressive you can be second. I could be miles off the mark but that's generally the gist of any metal situation I've been in.

If your bass has vol tone and three way switch you'd probably look at putting in a stacked pot for treble and bass cut and boost. What is in the bass currently and what do you have in mind?

No doubt they'll have a few riffs based around other open strings too, really the easiest thing here is to copy their tuning. Been down this road before, trust me, it's less grief in the long run to go with the flow here.

Tune your B to A and your E to D. Copy their drop tuning, it's the simplest solution and you'll pick it up easily enough, much more so than if you have DEADGC.
