Ahh the Bacchus is perfection, I won't be changing anything on it, way better B than the Hotwire too. No, I'm just surprised by how much the HW has come to life with the change, plus I'm a little surprised by how much I'm enjoying playing it that way. The voice of the HW would definitely suit fretless, I reckon. Doesn't mean I'll be embarking on a journey of bass w*** though ha ha.

I ordered a Hotwire 5 string many years ago, a custom jobbie with Q-tuners and a fancy Noll pre. While it was being built, however, I picked up a battered Bacchus 5 string cheap which was a revelation and, in truth, the Hotwire never really got a proper look in once it arrived such is my affection for the Bacchus. A couple of days ago I found a set of 6-strings I had bought for my old 6er but never got to use before I sold the 6... I found myself looking at the C string... then the Hotwire... then back to the C string... then back at the Hotwire... thought "[i]what have I got to lose?[/i]" and strung it up E to C. Wow! What fun. Now I'm using every bit of will power I have to resist ripping the frets out of the (absurdly) expensive Hotwire but, to be honest, I think a defretting is inevitable. Fretless E to C with lovely clear Q-tuners, how could that possibly be a bad idea?

Like it or not, your tone, what you play and how you play it all come as a package. To ignore one or to say it's insignificant will be to the detriment of the others. If the punters don't cop onto that nice growl you get out of your bass and rig, why would they notice that tasteful fill you did either? If you don't think the little things about our instrument all contribute to the whole, just let the keyboard player do the bass and stay at home

We're all Europeans now (even the British ), your rights as a buyer are covered by European law. The vendor should have offered you a replacement too (outside of the £25 PFO offer)? You're covered in the same way as if you bought it in a shop down the road, just extra hassle with couriers involved.

Having owned (and sold on) a few big G guitars, I'm forever immune to the lure of owning another Gibson. However, that does look kick-ass, it really does. I hope it's not just a good one, but a great one. Rock the sh*t out of it!

That Commando model, part of the "Global series", is made in the Philipines. To be honest, for the price that red one was going for, you could realisitically pick up a second hand Japanese one from Japan.

They've just overhauled the guitar with James Tyler, the new one actually looks quite decent. Here's hoping they do the same for the bass model and perhaps give it the same features.

The variax guitar does digital retuning on the fly, just tell it what you want each string's pitch to be and off you go. I can't see it working as a pedal though, you'd need to be impossibly precise with your playing so there aren't any fluffed notes or two strings ringing out at once, chords, etc would be hugely problematic. The piezo pickup for each string is the key to it on the guitar.

My 4003 always sounded like a 4003 no matter what I plugged it into. If it's a decent amp, no matter what gender or orientation, it'll sound like a 4003.
