1. aha, thanks guys! That must be it! It's certainly a difference to what i'm used to. I will try to get used to it and see how it goes for a while.
2.
Dunlops fit in the resessed ones if that's what on your bass. Warwick one's should do too - not being daft but you are pressing the button when you go to put them in?
LOL - Yes, I am pushing the knobby in when trying to insert I'll have to get the dunlop ones then. Can't find the old school warwick ones.
3. Thanks Grangur. I've PM'd on the parts, but the preamp is passive, and i'm really after the option of passive/active push/pull. Nice looking body though on that corvette!
4. Thanks Tauzero - but those are the new ones. I have them - they don't fit...
5. Hi All, I got a new bass today, but unfortunately a few issues around the preamp being replaced (seller didn't know - apparently). http://basschat.co.uk/topic/265121-nbd-warwick-proline-1996-corvette-dodgy-electronics-help/ Anyway, I got some token cash back... after a fight... life goes on. Here's where I need advice. I want to get close to the original spec as possible. The MEC has a 2-band, with push-pull. Would this suffice? : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TONE-MONSTER-SEB2-A-Preamp-Guitar-J-P-Bass-Balance-Volume-Treble-Bass-12dB-/181780508614?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a52f66fc6 I can't find the 'big brands' doing anything similar. Now, next [niche] issue: where do I get the old school recessed warwick strap-locks? Modern Warwick strap locks don't fit these (seller sent them, but clearly never tested them... LOL) Will the dunlop flush mounts fits the current cavity? I'm also going to give it a fret level, crown and polish. That's down the line... Any thoughts welcome, cheers
6.
My money is on an emg preamp there btw
Thanks Luke - they look like EMG knobs don't they? But it is a very weird thing - a parametric mid-boost circuit? Anyway, cut a long story short, the guy has given me a notably humble sum compensation. This is despite sending the wrong strap locks and a broken electronics cover for the back. Sigh. Good news: the bass roars and the neck is dead straight. Just-a-nut 1 is in good condition. Truss rod works like a dream. It's gonna be a bit of a mongrel - i'll start a new thread on suggested preamps!
7. Thanks Grangur! Let's see how it pans out - I will have to do a lot of research before selecting a pre. The seller seems very angry. Says it is 'a used bass' kinda like, 'what do you expect', 'geez'. He says if I want a new bass, I should buy a new bass. it's gonna get interesting...
8.
Looking at that picture of the control cavity, that volume pot looks odd - not the same as the warwicks I've seen iirc
Yeah, I googled imaged-ed MEC preamps in warwicks, and they all have the little 'MEC' embossed in enamel on the circuit boards and pots. None of which is present here. It sounds good though - but there are some seriously unusable settings to it. I cannot find afterarket prices on a MEC 2-band either... any ideas anyone?
9.
On the other hand, if you can get a used pre-amp from another BCer, you'll have a great bass. ( I know the down-side is you thought you wouldn't have to spend anything on it.)
Quite right - and I don't mind a bit of DIY, but what the h3ll is this doo-hickey in my friggin' bass?! Sigh. Ebay....
10. Hi All, I got this lovely bubinga/all wenge neck corvette today. Plays great, sounds great, only the preamp is really weird! It acts more like a parametric - and the vol knob is not push/pull (were they back in mid-90s?) Anyway, the 'bass' on the concentric pot has no mid-point indent, while the top 'treble' does. But I get the impression the treble is the mid sweep, whereas the bass is acting like the boost/cut. Moreover (get this) - when the 'treble' is centred on the indent, the 'bass' underneath no longer does anything! I've been suckered, haven't I ? This is some whole-other hack preamp going on, right? Does it even look like a MEC preamp!? Forget that piece of plastic in the middle there - some hack job to hold the back plate on. It';ll be gone soon! Needless to say... advice needed... I don't want to send it back because I bought it from Spain unseen (I know.... I know... so kill me...). It's covered by ebay rules.
11. Love these cheeky Rock Bass blighters. Priced right - and leaves space for investment in active circuitry. v. tempting!

13.
It is lovely - could be persuaded to part with too !!! SR500, much much better than SR300, SR400 for not much more cash.
All sounds good and promising - but the main question, do they growl? I see the mid-range sweep switch is handy for that?
14.
I have an SR1205 and I have to say it's one of the best basses I've had the pleasure of playing/owning.
I have to say that these are very intriguing... the SR1200 looks awesome. All those tone woods, and the reassuring attention to the truss rod being titanium etc. I have a lot of respect for Ibanez guitars, and am not surprised their basses are well respected around here... Might need to take the plunge one of these days
15. whoa, the SR740 looks lovely. I bet it plays like a dream. Why is the SR500 in the sweet spot? Good preamp? 2 band?
16. Hi All, I'm more of a fender/warwick guy, but am open-minded and intrigued about what I might be missing. I've been googling and see there is this 'soundgear' stuff as well as the SR series, and as always with Ibanez, a whole new language of acronyms to learn. If I was after a bass with tonnes of growl, flat radius neck, fairly thin neck, narrow nut, and active... would I go for the SR700? I'm thinking Warwick Corvette or Thumb tones, but those Bartolini MK-1s are confusing me... dual coil soapbar? Is like a p90? I prefer the thump of a MM pup - are these close? Any advice welcome, cheers
17. Photos to come as soon as it arrives - with mini review no doubt!
18.
Not only does he think it's made in Japan, but he thinks that eBay rules don't apply to him:
yeah, I know! haha... what an 'interesting perspective'. I found a different one on ebay and purchased it - a mid-90s bubinga corvette as well. Looking forward to hearing that distinctive growl! I don't mind the weight - I think its part of the sacrifice.
19. yeah, that's the one! No volute - so I guess its the one with the replaceable truss rod. Looks like an all wenge neck. It's 50 quid postage though... good grief. I reckon the best thing about warwicks is that they have so many moving parts, but the worst thing about warwicks... is that they have so many moving parts... You can fine tune EVERYTHING, but it means all those little grub screws get calcified and locked-down, then you spend 6 hrs on the web trying to find replacements. Those are my concerns with these things.
20. aha! thanks guys - I had a feeling I was on the right track. These ones have the JAN I nut... what do you think of it? Are these early 'transition' prolines considered pretty good? The way I understand it is that Warwick 'golden age' was between '90 and 2000. How much should a bubinga corvette go for nowadays? cheers
21. Hi All, There is a guy on ebay right now that is selling a Corvette 'proline' in bubinga, that looks like all wenge neck. He reckons it's MIJ and hasn't answered my question on whether he's sure it is... and I can't quite make out the rest of the serial (he's only written part of the serial on the listing... ) This warwick informal history pdf ... https://docs.google....aMzQ/edit?pli=1 ...says the only ones made in japan were dolphins. So this must be a MIG corvette in the transition phase to the Corvette Standard... right? cheers
22. I have an MJT stratocaster body - best relic job i've ever seen, even better than most fender custom shop jobs I see. nice call!
23.
I also changed the knackered chrome hardware to new gold stuff.
Great - reassuring to know they are 'out there'. How does it sound? I'm a bit worried about bumps or warps in the neck. I've had a few basses in the past that have stung me when they arrived with weird sh!t that the owner 'never noticed' ... Do warwicks have a reputation for this? I know that in the 90s they had truss rod issues - there is a youtube vid about it.
24. Hi All, I just bought a Bubinga Corvette. Owner will send later in the week and can't get home to send serial number - but these were the pics. The weird thing is that it says 'proline' - but my understanding is that there was no bubinga proline. This is a standard, right? That's fine, because I only paid the price for a standard It has the recessed straplocks and just-a-nut 1 - so what era are we talking? early 2000s? mid-90s? Any experts out there? I hope it works out. I really avoid buying 'sight unseen' - but sometimes it can't be helped Scary. Anyone experience with these? It looks like Wenge from the picture. Active pups (with weird knobs?!) cheers
