1. Not had a chance to get a pic yet! damn you festive season! Anyway, heres one of the old studio pics to show which one it is. Its the white mixer just incase And cause Im feeling good £850 to bass chatter! I also have a dual G5 mac to get rid of soon that would be ideal for this! But for now its all about the 003! G
2. Bump. Should get some pics up tomorrow night.
3. Hey everyone, So time has come to sell up as the studio i used has now moved up to HD and this is sitting doing nothing. It was the main part of the studio for about a year and done some great work. It still works perfectly although the left side has some scuffing the plastic where it was dropped during transit for a live session. Worked fine afterwords and was fully checked. Anyway, this is the Factory version so has the 8 motorized faders, 4 preamps, optical ADAT, word clock etc. Full Details can be read on the Avid site here. Fully working and never failed! It was originally bought during the 7.3 days, so includes all the factory plugins that came at the time. I have sinced upped to version 8 which i will include. Also is the original Music Production Toolkit which wont do much to v8 in terms of functions but does give additional plugins such as multitrack beat detecive, Smack! and MP3 export too. you could easily upgrade to ProTools 9 and complete production toolkit if you wish at the upgrade costs. And to top it off it includes the Line 6 Pod Farm software (the basic $99 version) which is pretty good once you start making your own settings. I will include the iLok too, I can transfer the licences if you wish, or just give you access to the digi and ilok account to pass over everything which would probably be cheaper. Looking for £750 all in but open to offers. I will try and get some pics up soon as. G
4. Just stay cool, not everything down, and watch your levels. You will alwyas solo the wrong track etc, just try not to. I always leave the mixer along while tracking so i cant possibly interfere with the cue mix's. Although my best one, I had another person helping me, who copied all the session files onto the internal Mac drive, and was working from them. End of the day copied them from the external drive onto the internal to copy to another external. word of warning, Mac's do NOT merge folders. if you have a session folder, and move another session folder to the same location it deletes the old one and takes the enw, not merge them like in windows. So in this case the vocal takes we just spent 4 hours on were now gone. one angry as hell singer and we got the tracks done even better in an hour. thank god it was a metal band! G
5. Great gig in Glasgow last night
6. Gonna be an arse here but my advice is sing up. I know its being a dick and sorry upfront but if you have the preamp gain up full and its not loud enough then its time to cut everything back and assess how everything fits. As an example i recently had a band in one of the rehearsal rooms complain that they couldn't hear the vocals from the PA and it was constantly feeding back. their solution was to use the very large live rig that was stored in the room. thats a 4.2k per side PA, not good in a small room. I went in and looked and the desk was up full, the mics were up full, and the gain was at full. In a life situation that means feedback. So I got them playing and spotted the problem right away that the band was too loud. I turned the amps off and got the drummer to play and brought vocals in. After that was done i got the guitar and bass amps in and everything was much better. So if you struggle to hear yourself with he gain up full its maybe not the mic thats the issue and just how you sing, or your bands too loud. I'm gonna shut up now cause thats not what you want to hear, but its where I would go looking.
7. Take a look in the classified sections of Sound on Sound, Tons on there usually. I always favour someone local though since you can chat face to face and see finished results. Also if your looking for any Mastering/PQ Editing let me know G
8. Hey guys, Having a clear out to get some more studio gear. Anyway, Up first is a pair of EMG 35Hz pickups, Passive things, not bad sounding but i loved the sound of active ones better. £25 shipped I also have a random EMG Balance pot kicking around, tested but never used. open to offers on this cause no idea on that. Might have a few things coming up too. watch this space G
9. I would do it the easy way, Import the wav, edit, copy paste. Done
10. I would suggest going for a 003 if you can, since you get the Word Clock to keep the timing right between the 2 devices. Seen a few issues with ADAT doing the annoying timing clicking popin things. If you do get a 002 though just make sure you get a decent optical cable.
11. Hey guys Decided to sell off my Mbox Micro. Its a great wee device for mixing with ProTools or MIDI work. Its a simple USB plug in stick for ProTools. only a headphone socket and no inputs. Comes with V 7.4 and V8 of pro tools Looking for £120 shipped G
12. Hey everyone, So being the metal type bass player that I am i have decided the best way for my sound is via 2 amps, or one amp powering 2 cabs, One for the low end, nice and clean but deep. And the distorted or effected highs. That way i will always have the deep low end. Problem is finding the amps. I was thinking of the Ampeg BSP of SVT-5. Both are a bit hard to get and have the downside the OD channel only does overdrive. So im now thinking of another amp, not sure which, and a Line 6 POD of some kind for all my effects. Any ideas on this kind of setup, and also suggestions for a splitter box to run the 2 amps? Cheers G
13. Some good choices. I Have heard the Adam A5's and used a lot of Tannoy's, currently owning Reveal 6D's. Both are very good options. The KRK ones are also very good from what i hear. Personally I would only buy monitors from a local place where i can hear how they sound. Each will be rather different and you might prefer one over another. Sub's are optional, You could try one without it and see how it goes then add it later but if the monitors are in the corner then you will get some big bass boosts. G
14. Yea, mastering engineer's and websites dont mix well. They have a HUGH EQ boost in the sh*t end and a complete lack of content frequencies. .... Sorry, just keeping it somewhat topical. But the studio is looking very nice!!
15. Sold pending the usuall. All PM's replied.
16. Hi everyone, Got an old ipod my misses no longer needs, so decided i would offer it to this place before ebay. Anyway, it's an 80GB 5th Gen Ipod video. Its used but by no means abused. works perfectly, never had an issue and no signs of the battery going! Comes with the sync cable, and a belkin case, plastic back with plastic front and aluminum layer, a nice Pink shade. Its pretty much lived in that so no major marks or anything! No headphones since i use the in ear ones, not very hygienic to give you them, and i like em too much! £50 shipped, ONO Cheers Gordon
17.
yeh, I meant more would it be so cheap and easy to replace the PSU? I wouldn't know.
Really depends on the mac, some of the older ones used standard power supplies. however alot use either external laptop style adaptors or its built in such a the current iMacs, Pretty sure it would cost more on the mac and take longer. G
18.
Well the only time my recording set up has been down was 2 weeks ago when the PSU blew. I was absolutely sh*tting myself as I hadn't backed up in a couple of days and I literally saw a flash and some smoke coming out of my PC. Luckily it was just the PSU and I fixed it with £20 and 20 minutes. Would it have been that simple with a mac? Or would their magical indestructable PSUs never blow?
Its hard to tell. Electrics can always go. PC or mac. But again in the same scenario if its just the PSU then your drives are usually safe. G
19. Hey everyone, I am getting my mits on a bunch of Delta 12 speakers and decided to build my bass rig. First a bit of background. I play the ol metal stuff so want something that will give me a lot of grit yet keep the bass. to get this right two amps usually work best. Since I don't drive i need something portable and movable so size is important. Amp wise I am looking for a Ampeg BSP preamp with a dual channel power amp. So, Spec wise I was thinking having a 2x12 would be best. however having each one on a separate input with an extension socket would be even better. This way i can have one speaker to focus on the bass (which im looking for low deep bass, very little mids or highs) and the second being the gritty distortion sound with a lot less bass. The extension socket allowing me to build 2 for the bigger gigs. I guess is like 2 1x12 cabs in one. Anyway. I have no clue on speaker designs since ive never done it so i need to learn, or if anyone has some designs even better Important parts is portability, so possibly even suitcase style would be fantastic. God im picky!! Cheers Gordon
20. Bump for a great little interface. Or for anyone looking for a bigger protools interface this is always welcomes as part of the upgrade paths for big discounts!
21. *Cracks knuckles* This is where my years of Computer support come in handy (Despite working in PC World I do know the products ) Along with recording. In the Windows/mac Debate, Mac is much more stable and reliable for any creative application even with the new Windows 7. I can agree a lot more people have issues with PC than Macs as they just seem to be designed for this whole idea of creativity. Lots of the advice here is pretty good but it really comes down to what your recording. If its a few tracks then you can run it off the internal hard drive despite what people will say, May be a bit slower but it can be done. If you are doing a few tracks (probably more than 8) I would go for an external hard drive. Going for a laptop with a 7200rpm drive will cost more. and one with 2 is even more! Spec wise, Dual Core Processor(AMD or Intel will be fine) and plenty of memory is probably the most important. After that just make sure its got all the USB ports you need too. Its also worth considering which interface your going to use BEFORE you buy the laptop. most laptops on the high street now do NOT come with firewire ports for example. A fantastic place for help with the interface is this lovely site. It gives you the options based on your input to help you find the best interface, very handy for anyone in my opinion! One last point, You might be best looking into the high street stores who will be getting rid of Windows vista based systems thanks to the new Windows 7. As when a new system comes out some software might not be fully compatible yet so may cause some slow starts till its sorted. Any Vista machine from the high street should get a "free" upgrade to 7 (so long as you pay £20 postage) but would help ensure compatibility from the get go. Apart from that have fun Gordon
22. You can get an iLok for £25 these days. And the account is free. Still not a bad deal for $99 software! G
