1.
One of the best sounds I managed to get while I was at uni (without using some of the ridiculously price mics...) was a AKG D112 Close and Central and a Large Omnidirectional 1m out. I wouldn't do it in a untreated room though. Maybe try a AKG D112 @ 6" and a Rode NT1A @ 1m
I recorded bass from about 50 cm from speaker. The outcome was outstanding.

    Peavey BW
Yes. It was pretty powerful for its size and led a couple of friends of mine to seek one out for themselves. However, compared to the Rumble it is a little muddy and lacking in definition. It was a great amp and served me well (Peaveys are usually pretty bomb proof) but the Fender is half the weight, more refined - but not overly so... and plain has more balls on tap! Peaveys are (usually) good amps
I own fender rumble 100w.Very happy with it.
Before I got my current Fender Rumble 500 combo I used to use a Peavey Databass. It's very similar to the photo you posted and uses the same 1x15 BW speaker. I reconed it twice over its working life. It's a fairly simple matter of unbolting the big magnet from the old speaker and bolting it onto the new one. The cones have undergone a few revisions. The last one I fitted was definitely a later revision than the two older cones
were you overally happy with it?

    Peavey BW
It's Peavey BW is the Black Widow series of speakers, Peaveys best and still up to decent modern standards. You can also replace all the working parts in a single basket change. Parts are still available and it's a simple DIY job. The only problem is that you can buy a new speaker from Eminence and the like for the same price or less. I've found that BW speakers o this vintage have problems with the adhesive used to make them breaking down. The dust cap dome in the middle of the speaker can partially come away and the cone can separate from the corrugated surround. It can be successfully stuck back together with Copydex. Have fun
I'll have it checked out first and hopefully I fit it with a light weight speaker.
  5.
Very good purchase. I have 100 w combo rumble for rehearsals and they sound great.
Same here, can`t fault it.

    Peavey BW

I `ve got one of these collecting dust. It has the original Pavey speaker (the picture is from Google images, not my amp). I think (top of my head) , it`s Pavey BW 115? At the back of amp it says 400w, again not 100% certain. I bought this around 1990 as a teenager and it served well. It was so loud that on its own it was enough to gig in a medium sized hall. When I say hall ( that can fit in 1500-2000 people). Anyway it would play through a 4 hour gig with multiple bands. I lend it once to a band who I started out with when we were 16 and a person who ran the community centre "borrowed " it and used it as a cab at a disco night. Since then the sound has been distorted. Fast forward, I tried it out in 2011 and it still works, so I am thinking having it delivered to me from Europe and take it for a repair. I have checked the speaker before many times and I could not see any visible damage. I looked at the closed circuit board and nothing obvious. Hope it is only a minor fault and it will be up and running one day. Anyone used a similar amp from circa mid 80`s?
  7.
More pricy, but I'd look into Sennheiser 421. Sounds killer on bass cabs and blends nicely with 57. I like to have one off-axis, and one on-axis... achieving EQ differences via different blends
Rather pricy but good reviews.Do you use two of these?
  8.
Again, just a generalisation, but if it's the cab I want to capture, it's not the cone I want. I don't listen to bass with my ear up to the cone, so I don't try to capture that way. For guitar, it's a bit different, but even then, I'd be micing from a distance (usually 1 m or so...), and maybe, just maybe, also adding in a specific 'cone tone' with an E609 suspended from the cab top; especially for a sealed cab. I suppose it depends to some extent how you're playing your bass, too..! If you're playing like a guitar (lots of upper mids, soloing etc...) it may make sense. How do you cope if there's a tweeter in the cab if the cone is close-miced, for instance, or if the cab is ported..? No, for bass, I'm quite careful in the mic placement, but would do it with trial and listening, rather than any measurement of distance from cone. It may turn out to be centred, but I wouldn't be looking specifically to centre or not. I just listen first, and place the mic where it sounds best to me. I'd be more concerned as to why the DI component is, it would seem, unused. What's wrong with it that you can't mix it in..? It's not essential, of course, but I'd need a pretty good reason for not wanting any at all in the mix.
I've tried to mix the di but still not happy with di sound. It's not for me. Thanks for reply
  9. Wow 1 metre.I read it's between 1-3 feet so 1 metre sounds about right. No bleed for me. The best sound I get is placing the mic just off centre. About 3 inches away. I placed the mic pependicular to the cone with good results. Would you place the mic in the centre one metre away? Thanks dad☺
  10. After some research I bought SM57 for recording my bass and guitars and I am truly impressed with the results. Obviously the mic positioning deliveres different results. I'm thinking of getting AKG mic too so I can capture both low ends and highs of the bass. I tried mic and di but regardless how much pro producers swear by it, I had not had good results. What mics do you guys use for bass recording?
  11.
There are a few useful tools such as the action ruler above, there are also feeler gauges and calipers, all can be useful and worth having for various "tech stuff". However, I think you're approaching setup in the right way by setting the bass up correctly for your personal playing style and the bass itself. Everyone has their preference and the guidelines figures you may have read are just that...guidelines. They are going to change if any of the variables change, such as fret wear (or improper leveling in the first place) string gauge and playing style. So, don't sweat the numbers, if you're setting them up for yourself and they feel good to you, then good job...I'd call that efficient .
Action rules is probably what I need
  12.
That sounds right to me. Watch this series of vids by John Curruthers, It explains the full process. https://www.youtube....h?v=te44eWXd9pc
I have followed this in the past to set my bass up.
  13. I have set up my basses previously following this principle. 1. Neck/ trust rod depending what strings I used 2. Action 3. Intonation I always set the action by feel that seems to work for me. Is there a more effective way to set up a bass? Any gauge measuring device I could use for action setting? Any constructive advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks P

  17. Sealed my first deal here on the basschat. Hope to make more deals and make new friends.
  18. Steve Harris Royal Blue MIJ fitted with SPB-4
  19. Lewis is a truly genuine bloke who knows his stuff. I bought a Steve Harris P bass in Royal Blue with fitted SPB 4 from him. He chucked in new strings, set it up and added the original SPB-1. Had a nice 15 mins talk about bass gear and music. Thanks Lewis.
  20.
Ah yes, trouble is I'm going to Reading to sell a bass, which will mean I'll have quite a full wallet going in there!.....Perhaps better just drive home and pay it in the bank.....
I think I might be going there (soon) myself to get a new strap for 'my new bass'
  21.
Here is my 2009 Made in Japan Steve Harris Signature Fender P-Bass in Royal Blue Metallic, a replica of the Bass Steve has played for all of Maiden's career, but it was only finished in this colour from approx 1982 for the Beast on the Road Tour, right through to the No Prayer on the Road tour in 1990 (Maiden's heyday, some would say!) Its an amazing bass and I'm sorry to see it go but it unfortunately never gets played by me and it really deserves to be played by someone! I've been over the Bass many times and I cant find fault with it, Chrome Scratchplate, Badass II Bridge and I added the Seymour Duncan SPB-4 Steve Harris Signature pickups pretty much as soon as they were available to buy (these weren't available when the bass came out in 2009, they actually had the SPB-1), if you've had the pleasure of trying one, you'll know how good they sound. Only used by me at home sparingly in 7 years, never gigged even once, and has become something of an ornament now, which is a real shame for such a Bass. This was one of the first to come into the UK and was purchased by myself in January 2009 (my local store was a Fender Dealership at the time) and will come with its padded Fender Gig bag that came with the bass when I bought it, and Fender Hang tag. Weight of the bass is 10.2lbs The pictures speak for themselves, the bass is in fantastic condition. I even have the original Steve Harris signature Flatwound strings if you want them, they didn't work for me so they came off pretty quickly. These new were Approx £1100.00+, and you obviously can't get them now, since the new MIM West Ham logo model superseded it. I'm asking £850 o.n.o for the bass which is in pretty much as new condition, with Pickup upgrade. Any questions, please ask by commenting or PM. Bass is in Bridgend area of South Wales, but I can/will travel to accomodate buyer. No trades on this one thanks gents, I'm all good for gear at the moment.. I pmed you.
  22.
So I had a spare 5mins at work today stuck in the centre of Hanley so popped into Academy of Sound they don't have many basses usually but now and again a secondhand instrument comes in or the odd fender that's worth a look. Strangely this time a Squire stood out from the crowd. It was an Inca silver classic vibe with matching headstock, looked really nice good neck pocket and for the money looked like a bit of a steal? Now I didn't have time to plug it in but does any Basschatter have any experience with theses are they worth a punt as a gigging back up as I'm tempted to go back and give it a play/maybe buy.
I own a Squire vibe jazz bass. Fantastic sound and playability. I replaced the pups with SeymourDuncan pups.Roto round wound strings.it growls like a lion.
  23.
as I stated before (in the middle of a post so easily missed) it was in a pub, in the corner of the room on a raised hard wood area, a difficult sound check with lots of hard surfaces for the sound to bounce off, then the sound altered as the room filled up
You could've chuck some people around to make it sound better.
  24.
I can see that would work really well in a full band mix and be nice and clear sounding. That's not a laughable eq setting at all, it's the kind of setting we of the bass chat community advocate.
What works for you or for "we of the bass chat community" does not work for everyone. The OP does not state what venue the gig was at, carpet floor, pub furniture, stage layout, acoustics he. Therefore the guitarist in his band may have been correct with the settings.
  25. If I could I`d help but all the figures in EQ settings mean nothing to me. I go by ear. But would be good to learn the technical side of it too.
