1.
Remember that those are 3 'luthier weeks' ;p . I had pictures of my bass glossed and lacquered on the 24th August with a mention that he still had to flatten back the lacquer, bolt it all together, dress the frets and let it settle. I haven't had any message yet to say it's ready to be picked up, but I don't want to rush him as I'm happy he won't release it until it's perfect.
My Shuker is going to be ready at the end of September. It was going to be ready in two months about 5 months ago too. Haha! I just leave him to it, I can't imagine he's sat twiddling his thumbs or owt and I'll get it when I get it It is getting difficult to explain why I've had a constant erection for nearly a year though Hope you get it soon dude! 3. Dude I picked up an ABM evo3 earlier this year and, to my ears, it sounds ace. I used it with a Schroeder cab the other night and still have the boner. Use the combo for now and save up to get something you're going to be in love with (like the GK seeing as that's taken your fancy!), definitely worth it in the long run. Seriously though, you can pick up ABM heads on ebay for naff all. Yes they're PRC made a lot of them, but if you want something for not a lot, it's a good place to start for a head. Good luck fella!
4.
Only one week (and a POETS day) to go! Jon has been really patient with my last minute spec questions - we've got it nailed now
Hope you enjoy it man! I am uber jealous!!
5. Sheffield: West Street Live is probably the best venue for out of towners. Their promoters can be found at www.myspace.com/mentholmanpromo and they are thoroughly decent people! There's also Grapes, Boardwalk and Corp - fantastic venues but not a great deal of point unless you put the night on yourself and get some local bands to play and promote it. You could maybe try the Harley, Red house, Moorfoot Tavern as well, but I have no experience of gigging there. Good luck with it! I'm sorting something out for our lot for October so this thread is mega useful! T
6.
Aye, thar blows a sexy beast Just wish it sounded like my 6er... Sounds like you have a lot on your plate at the mo dude, best of luck! Cheers, Eude
Cheers man! Thankfully the pressures (nagging) of an upcoming wedding mean I can't be thinking about the Shuker night and day and so I can't drive myself mad waiting. Haha!
7. That thing gives me a hard on. If I wasn't funding my own Shukey Dukey (plus wedding, plus house purchase!) you would have had me at hello! Best of luck with the sale dude, I'm sure you won't be waiting too long!!
8.
My band call them idiot lights They are a big hit with the punters though when I go amongst them. Oddly enough they seldom comment on the superb workmanship of Mr Shuker's fabulous sunburst or the hand carved neck profile and perfect balance. They very rarely comment on the tactile inner harmony of the parts of the bass working delightfully together to give a natural resonance rarely found in a "normal" P bass but they regularly say "Ooooh look at the lovely little lights" ...
Idiot Lights - Genius!!!
9.
Nice one. Nicely different. I'm sure it will be brilliant and +1 on side LED's. They are truly fab..
Cheers dude! Yeah I'm looking forward to having the LED's - was playing a gig the other night and the kindly engineer would "smoke" me every time I went near the drum riser. Now not being able to see fret markers is generally ok (I usually just aim in the general vicinity of the right fret/string), but I couldn't see the bleeding neck either!!!! I'm thinking of these as landing lights. Haha!
10. Much appreciated, cheers fellas! Strap locks are a must for me, I'm always ridiculously conscious of it when I don't use them!!
11. Well this puts me in an awkward situation. I must now go home to the mrs and explain that unfortunately there's been a change in proceedings and I must now order a Les Paul bass as well, and ask her if she would prefer me to sleep in the spare room or the living room. Been following this one on the Crimson diary page. Fantastic looking bass!!
12. Thank you all! Payday tomorrow!!!!
13.
Be careful with wearing long Comfort Strapps. They are fine in the bra position, but can be a bit bungee cord the longer you go... which isn't ideal for the lower slung bass - especially if you are rocking out (which I presume you should be what with having an Explorer!)
Oh cool, cheers for the warning dude! Rocking out is indeed the name of the game so shall bear this in mind!
14. You are both fine fellows! Thank you! Yorick - yes please!
15. Hello, I've got an Explorer on the way and would love some advice from any other explorer/thunderbird/silly-shaped bass players who can let me know where I can find a decent strap that is long enough for the job! I'm not quite going to be playing it round my knees but suffice to say it will need a rather long strap, but it's also a rather expensive beast so I want to get a good one to save me the embarassment of crying in front of my band if the strap breaks and my beloved falls to the ground with a crash bang wollop!!! My thanks in advance T
16.
nice 1 mate, i love my dean Z although it's one of those other fretted instruments that we're not allowed to talk about on here. I know what you mean about it's size though man, i mean the case it came with is the size of a bass case! I wouldn't mind 24 frets though.
Yeah it's huge! To get it in our old singers car we had to prop it up on the window ledge bits of the back doors, if you get me!? Beyond ridiculous! I hope you have more luck with it than I did!
17.
Looks bloody lovely so far (: Can't wait for when you put it up for sale Zach
Cheers fella You may be waiting some time though, I am seriously giddy!!
18. Cheers dudes! A jazz player I am not. What gave me away? Haha!
19. Have a read of THIS - especially the section called 'Wood Preparation' I'm sure someone on here has a better link or can tell you much better than that can, but there are worse places to start. Don't be too keen to get it finished as quickly as possible. Hopefully you'll have that guitar for a long time, so spend the time now to get it spot on. Good luck dude!!!
20. Hello, I've not put anything on here yet because frankly I thought I would drive myself insane enough as it is waiting for my new bass!!! Anyway, the background: I used to own a Dean Z Explorer, which sounded horrific, weighed a ton, had a two-octave neck so was so long it wouldn't fit in any conventional case, but which looked (to my eyes, I know not to all!!) the absolute balls. I sold it a couple of years back to fund an Aerodyne but always wanted an Explorer again, so when I came across some money at the end of last year I asked Jon to make me one, but to make a few key changes to make it more practical. Yes yes, I know 'practical' is hardly the word to use with 'Explorer' but hey ho. The Dean: I play 4-string and barely go beyond the 14th fret, so we decided to move the bridge back in the body and have a shorter neck to improve balance and allow me to get a case for it. We also removed the scratchplate and changed the control layout to be more like the Dean rather than the Gibson. The shorter neck puts the whole thing into better proportions than the original as well IMHO. Mockup next to an Epi: The rest of the spec is: 4-string Set neck 34" scale maple neck Rosewood fretboard jumbo fretwire white side dots - 2mm two way truss rod carbon fibre reinforcement Jazz profile, 38.5mm nut Brass nut Gibson Explorer-style headstock mahogany body Rear-routed Black Hardware Individual bridge units vol, vol, tone flame maple facing and headstock SD Quarter Pounder Precision pickup (neck) SD STK-J2 (bridge) Red finish (very similar to a 5-string Shuker Jazz (Mikes?) with black hardware) I then foolishly gave Finbar a lift to see Jon last time I was up there and was convinced that I should ditch the side dots and get white LED's instead, so am doing that. I barely touch the tone knobs on my Jazz's so we're changing it to vol, vol, LED brightness as that just made more sense!!! Jon's a fair way on with it now so here's a current progress pic: Not to everyone's taste, I'm sure, but my god it gives me the horn!!!! T
21. That looks amazing. I'm off to see Jon this weekend so will definitely see if I can check this out in the flesh!!
22. No worries, it's plenty loud enough through headphones. Obviously it depends what headphones you've got, but I used to use it with in-ears and it was fine. Cheers T
23. Hi there, I was looking for £50+ ideally. One went on ebay yesterday or the day before for over £100 which, to be honest, I think is a little over the odds. If I got £75 I'd be a happy chappy. That'd be £75 towards new amp new cabs new amp new cabs new amp new cabs. It's also a way for me to get new amps and new cabs without my mrs breaking my nuts off!! cheers! T
24. BUMP cos these are now on ebay for silly cheap! T
