Cheers for the kind words chaps! I think what has been mentioned above about Muffs being destructive is very true. It is a fuzz, after all! Also true is that there is no "right" or "wrong" when choosing one. Personally, I wouldn't touch the EHX Deluxe because most of the extras are completely unnecessary in my eyes and just mean a larger enclosure, but that's just me. Clean blend/no clean blend, stock mids/adjustable mids have varying levels of value to different players. The Tarkin I have on my own pedalboard has a clean blend and a three-way adjustable mids switch, because that's how I like it myself, whereas others get a great sound with a Muff without the extras. I can't comment on a TFR as I haven't had the pleasure of playing one, but they look very nice and I appreciate the effort that has been gone to to recreate a particular sound, and by all accounts it does it very well. The EHX BBM did exactly what it said on the tin, and for the price you can't argue, just the niggle about the clean blended setting boosting your signal meaning it was difficult to implement to a setup without modification to the pedal. Again, I've not had the pleasure of playing a Grey Stache, but I can't imagine they sell as well as they do based on kid paint alone!! I'm trying to tread carefully here, lest I sound like an advert, so I'm only really passing comment on pedals by other builders - feel free to drop me a PM if you want to know more about mine and the variations/mods I do! As for sound clips for mine, I'm currently without a recording setup and am in the workshop most nights so have been unable to get bass clips recorded as yet. On the one hand I'm glad I've been too busy, but on the other I am very conscious that they are absent, so if anyone has the facilities and wants to review or record bass clips of a Tarkin give me a shout!

^ Great board dude, very tidy!

I use lenses on my pedals so you can have a bright LED without the glare. They light the whole lens too, so you don't get the same narrow-viewing-angle problem either. Quite handy really!
Having trouble with my big muff at the minute, I'm not getting any output, then if I press Down on the volume knob it intermittently works. Has anyone else had this? Is it just a dry solder joint?
Could be one of a few things to do with the volume pot itself or the connections to it, have you opened the pedal and had a look at the wires running from the pot?
Did you build them yourself? I just went to his website, he's got some interesting plans there. I'm tempted to have a go at one of his home cinema subs!
I have to confess I did not! I plan on building a couple myself in the next few years, but I didn't have the time or tools to do it myself

First, people should always ask to borrow gear, and it's up to you whether you lend it. Simply asking for something shouldn't mean they automatically get it! Saying "no" doesn't make you an arse. Are they going to pay for it if it breaks? I wouldn't count on it. Second, the best way to try and avoid the issue is to arrange everything in advance. If you're not the guy who arranges things, make sure the guy who is knows what you'll lend and what you won't. I'd avoid leaving jack cables on stage too - easily nicked or picked up accidentally if nothing else, and then you're up the creek when you get up there to play. Nothing worse than needing to borrow gear during a changeover!

Interesting setup and good read!

Another fan of two 15's here as well. I use two BFM Jack 15 cabs and I couldn't be happier.
Some quality stuff there mate, have you considered upgrading your patch leads? You will be surprised at the difference some quality cables can make to your tone!
You said exactly what I was thinking
Surely 2 of those straight through jack connectors would allow you to put the 2 mxrs closer and tuck the oc2 right up next to the tuner?
I'd do that with the Boss, but be careful with the MXRs as they almost always use board-mounted jacks, and unless the pedals are bolted down you can put strain on the PCB when pressing the switch.
A LOT of Rage Against the Machine:
This song was pretty much the first thing that came into my head! Best thing about it is he uses the effects to make it better, rather than just for the sake of using them.

They're not for me, but it's an interesting idea. Be nice to see how this develops!
That would be great many thanks.
Sorry, busy weekend, back in the office now and desperately avoiding doing the dayjob. Quick sketch of how you could look at wiring this up. Input jack to bypass switch, bypass switch to the in on the blend PCB, Send from the blend PCB to the in of the BM PCB. I've not wired this up, and it's merely an example of how to use the PCB's you've got there. I'd be tempted to also look at opamps and summing amplifiers, as well as googling "panning for fun" from Geofex! Hope that helps, report back!
Cheers for the advice TG, I'll jumper the trim pot. This is starting to fry my head a bit. I'm trying to use this diagram as a starting point: http://www.sabrotone...uit_w_addon.gif but I can't figure out how to get the clean signal to the blender.
That switching scheme won't work for this application. From your bypass switch, you need to run to the clean-blend PCB. The additional switch to turn on and off the clean blend isn't a bypass switch, you use it only to switch the output - either fuzz or fuzz and blend. Assuming you're using a 3PDT blue switch, you'll probably use one pole for LED indication, one to switch between lug 2 on the blend pot and the BM output (for blended fuzz or just fuzz, respectively), and the final one to disconnect lug 3 of the blend pot from the output of the BM when not wanting clean blend. I'll draw it out when I get chance today or over the weekend!
I'm trying to blend a Big Muff circuit with this blender: http://pedalparts.co.../01/Blender.pdf Many thanks for your help.
You may get popping switching that in and out. What I would probably do is leave the input/send and just concentrate on switching the BM output and the mix pot output, while at the same time taking the mix pot out of the equation with one of the other poles on the switch. Jumper the Level trimpot on the blend PCB, you've already got the BM Level control so won't need this.
Was looking at your build blogs on your website. Really cool stuff! What type of paint do you use to fill your etchings (on the Like Rome pedal for example)? Enamel?
Cheers! Aye I use enamel spray paint. At the minute, budget limits me to spray cans, a compressor is on my Christmas list, though my Christmas list is pretty long... NoirBass - what are the fuzz and blend circuits you'll be using? Switching may depend on the type of fuzz to get the best out of it is all.
Excellent work sir. I have just built my first few effects pedals (including a bass fuss!) and am about to embark on a Beavis style proto rig too. And I am also instantly addicted! Can anyone offer me some advice on painting the enclosures? 1/ I have read loads of walkthroughs on the process, but they all suggest baking them in an oven. Is that really necessary? Can I just leave them to dry? 2/ Also how do I prime them, do I use an etch primer? or can I just use a standard car type primer? 3/ if I want to paint artwork on them can I use acrylic paint and then clear coat them? So many questions, I'd be really grateful for some advice.
Depends what kind of finish you're after readlly - for the painted artwork you mention in 3/ are you talking about ZVex style stuff? If so, try Uni Posca Paint Pens. You can then clear coat over them no problem. If you do go down the line of baking your pedals, you absolutely 100% must not use the same oven you cook food in. Grab a small toaster oven from Argos for £20 or so. This also gives you a dust-free environment. You don't NEED to bake the pedals, but you need to wait a long time for the paint to cure before you can apply clear coat, and then a long time for that to cure before you can start attaching jacks etc without cracking the finish. I bake my pedals, the finish is far more durable and depending on other contraints you can have a box painted and clear coated in a couple of days. If you're only going to make the odd one here and there I wouldn't have thought buying an oven would be worth it though. Lots of divided opinion about this on DIYSB and FSB forums though. Best bet is to identify a style you like and then try things out. I'm a fan of etching, so 99% of everything I do is etched, with a lot of bare metal showing on the finished box - others are not so keen though! Good luck with it!
