1. Pretty good last night. Was doing a friends band a favour and stepping in at a weeks notice due to previous bass player deciding he didn't fancy it any more. Only a short set but still mildly challenging (I seem to be doing a lot of "helping out at short notice" so getting the hang of it now. Played at a venue in Nottm called the social (for anyone who knows it). first band up and went pretty well. I've been doing covers for a while now so not done an originals gig and I enjoyed the different atmosphere. Next one with them is next week, then we'll see what happens regarding them booking more.
2. quick bump nice pedal, just not using it
3. Delayed bump and a price reduction as I forgot I still have this, sitting around, taking up space, looking for a new home........
4.
I still want to start a "Basschat Steve Club" Im a Stephen, and ive messaged five steves in the last two weeks!
I'm in
5. my tip for hearing yourself. Earplugs. Like singing with your fingers in your ears, you hear your own voice really well. Sounds odd but works for me (as long as you can still hear enough of the music to find the note!)
6. Pretty good first gig with the new drummer at a pub in Holbrook (nr Derby). She's only been with us 6 weeks but has learnt, and pretty much nailed, every song. Good - we got booked for another gig there next month purely on the strength of the soundcheck! Bad - My mate who came to watch had too much to drink and thought that "crazy train" was our best song. We didn't play it!
7. For one song in our set i need to downtune by half a step, so I decided to use a 2nd bass for that song, and therefore automatically have a back up should I ever need one. Was about to say I've never needed a back up but that would be tempting fate for tonight's gig!
8. I'm the fellow Fool for your Loving learner, and I must admit I didn't download guitar pro but the keyboard player sent me a midi file and a tab. using the 2 together I pretty much sussed it. Tempted to just get it though as I found the file really useful. not sure how many times it would be of benefit though as I can normally find a song from the CD. This one, however, was particularly stubborn!
9. My covers band (link to website below) have decided to have a go at learning Whitesnake, Fool for your loving. I need to have a crack at working it out tonight, but having listened to it I think it's a tad more fiddly than I first thought. I've had a look around for tab on the net to help me out but can't find any. So.....if any of you nice fellow bassists out there have a tab I'd really appreciate a copy. or any tips from those who already play this. If not then I'll just have to do it the old fashioned way (Headphones and patience!. oh and a Tascam CD-BT1)
10. I normally use the plastic straplocks for gigs, and never had a problem, but don't bother for rehearsal as I don't move around anywhere near as much. Until last week however, when my Jag magically jumped off me and face down onto my pedals. Never mind, only 3 chunks of wood out of the front and 1 broken switch! locks at rehearsal as well from now on
11. Guitar?? do I look like a guitar player?? Actually don't answer that.........
12. Hi, Decided to sell the MXR Bass Auto Q envelope filter. Bought it from LukeWard last August but to be honest it's not been used much so I'm going to pass it on. Good little pedal, with some great sounds but just not for me. Looking for what I paid for it, which was £75 posted. (now reduced to £65) Think that's fair. It's in good nick, but the battery compartment cover on the bottom is missing. Not a problem as the velcro attached underneath keeps the battery in should you use one. Cheers guys
13. you pay the tax as due when you bring it in. Simple. Anything else is illigal. If you want to take the risk of fines etc then go for it. I did when I brought mine back. Still cheaper than buying here.
14. Nowt wrong with the old "2 bands" thing. I'm in a rock blues covers band and an originals band. Both scratch different itches, and don't want to drop either, or say that one is more important than the other. Just different. However, I enjoy both. If I didn't enjoy one, then I'd move on.
15. Might try and pop in. I do live in Mapperley Park so it would be at least a 10 minute walk for me, not sure I can manage that distance.
16. How many pairs of shoes do you (or the missus) have? lots for different occasions, or to go with things, or just because they look good. You can choose what to wear (use) depending on a whole raft of different things, from what looks right to what you happen to fancy. Basses are the same and a whole lot cheaper than my wife's shoes!!
17. Apologies for the bump of an old(ish) thread. The gig was Sunday and weny very well. No major errors, just the odd minor one (that I can put down to perhaps not knowing what to do with all the space I had on the massive stage/trailer). For your amusement, a couple of pics The stage! lots of space and kept the rain off. What you don't see are the 100 or so motorbikes that we were looking at! And one of me, not actually looking at the fretboard. A rare event never captured on film before!
18. Listening as I type and I have to say I quite like it. I can see the Strokes comparison, and for rough recordings I think it's more than enough for the songs to come through and to get you gigs etc. Rejects is good. Like the song and listened to all of that Rule of four. Have to admit I didn't like. The intro showed promise but never happened for me The Bundle. Nope sorry. not for me Flight. Yup, good. Very Arctic monkeys, perhaps too much so. Song itself is strong.
19. Cheers guys, some helpful replies (and some "just get on with it" ones!) It's going OK really. I'm simplifying where the bass part isn't prominant, and writing crib sheets to help me out. I don't think I'll get them perfect, but as long as I can get through, sound tight, and enjoy it then i'll be happy.
20.
quite liking it actually. Add you as a friend too - let me know when you gig
Cheers, we're a little way off that at the moment but aiming for Autumn so will let you know. Will be nice to say hello to a fellow 'chatter

My Band

Guys, My new band have been doing some basic bedroom recording. Nothing too special, more to get the songs down to teach a new drummer and possible new guitarist. They're up on the myspace site so I wondered if I could collect some opinions from you nice folk. We'd appreciate any comments, be it on the songs, playing, sound. Anything really that we can feed back into live playing, or when we get some proper recordings done. And......2 of the 4 on there are my first real foray into songwriting (at the ripe old age of 30 something). I won't tell you which ones (in the vague hope that I get some nice comments!) Cheers everyone
22. As the title says. Let's start by saying I've not really ever played in a "covers band". I've done covers here and there, but have always been more into originals. I've agreed to help a mate out by playing a gig in his covers band (think rock classics and the odd modern ish one) on the 20th of April as he was stuck, and it's a fair sized gig. However the scale of the task in hand has dawned on me. I have 30 songs to learn in a little over 3 weeks. OK to be fair, about half a dozen I already know fine, and another half dozen i'm familliar with enough to play, but the remainder I need to work out, and then get to a competent level, quickly. Set list is : You really got me I Predict a Riot Sweet Home Alabama You Do Something to Me Funky Music The Guitar Man Creep Basket Case Desperado Feel Like Making Love Take Me Out Parisienne Walkways See The Light Call me No. 5 Wishing Well Don't Believe a Word Mr Crowley Witch Queen of New Orleans Fall to Pieces Whiskey in the Jar Midnight Hour Wanted Dead or Alive Born to be Wild Comfortably Numb Johnny B Goode Alright Now Love walked in All along the watchtower starstruck paranoid So guys......... Any advice on this? hints and tips? and there are a couple that I'm really struggling to get. Namely "Funky Music" and "See the light". Anyone play these and have any specific pointers? Oh, and wish me luck!
23.
were one night only supporting them?
they were. They seemed pretty good to be honest.
24. AndyH, Sorry to set this one running! Yup enjoyed the gig, lots of energy, extremely tight and good sound (and not just saying that because you're here....oh no). Felt like a slightly short set but I put this down to them being a young band with only one album of material that the audience would know, and actually I think a shorter set filled with the known songs is a better bet than a longer one with lots of new stuff. Certainly at this stage and at that venue. The tuning thing only bugged me as it's something I don't do, and don't like to hear. It's not a major problem but did detract a tiny bit for me. I sort of take on board what you say about the singer stepping on a pedal as he does bound around a lot. I did wonder if it really was a tuning thing or just something he does in the spaces between the songs as he wasn't tuning, just sort of checking.
