  1. I've just started trying to do this a bit more, but not having done so before is nothing to do with "Britishness" or anything like it. I've been using forums (and usenet before there were forums) for 25 years, and being able to "like" things is a pretty recent thing. I'm getting in the habit though. Posting replies saying "thanks" always used to be bad netiquette.
  2. I noticed that MonoNeon doesn't use a "proper" left hand grip either, but he also has really long fingers. I thought I was going to have to do the same thing after some wrist problems, but exercising and stretching seems to be helping. I wasn't too worried, I already play guitar with a dodgy left hand, with the approval of my guitar/bass teacher. I think it's a 10% thing, but that's just some theoretical difference versus a "proper" left hand position done well and that's feels good. Going with baseball bat style and having a left hand position that you're comfortable with and that let's you practice and play lots and enjoy it will make more difference than that IMO.
  3. I really think that's got something. The punk side of it is not my thing, but the way you've pulled it away from the punk formula is. If you did the same thing from a blues rock "base" I'd be raving about it. Go for it.
  4. That's pretty much right, but there is an in-between option, which is one of the bigger gaming-style laptops. That's what I went for, it sits on my desk 99% of the time, 17" screen + 2 extra monitors, but if I need to take it somewhere I can. It's got a desktop version i7 (and some big fans to cope), 32G RAM and SSD drives (one card style, one 2.5"). Mine has Thunderbolt 3, second hand one won't though. You do end up paying for a gfx card you won't use much, but on a second hand one that's probably not a huge chunk of the cost. I'm expecting mine to last at least 5 years, probably more (it's done 2 already, and still has enough power that I don't even bother tweaking what is running at home - I might if I used it for anything live). It does weigh nearly 4kg though! The fans were a worry at first but it's never stretched enough for them to have do much. Stick "gaming laptop" into ebay and you'll see the sort of thing. Although, thinking about it, second hand you will probably get some that have had some stick. PS I should say it's not just a music machine, it's my main PC for software development (running Linux for that, hence PC not Mac).
  5. I didn't realise there was a Sonarworks headphone edition. My headphones are on the supported list, but with the comments above I'm wondering how much difference it will really make - they are a pair of Sennheiser HD 650s so I'd expect them to be pretty close without any tweaking. I havn't actually done a mix on them yet so that will be the test, although with my lack of mixing skills I might not be able to tell Something else to learn, which is fun. I'm using the 'phones quite a bit now, I decided against trying to do anything with monitoring in a 2m x 2.5m box room, especially as I have the go-ahead to swap rooms in the next month or two, up to a whoppping 3m x 3m - I'll have a look again when I'm set up in there.
  6. They all seem to be terrible, hope RM don't get away with this. It's just lack of care and that is within the power of any of these companies to fix, from the top down. The Mrs was packing something the other day, my advice was "Pack it as if they're going to kick it all the way there". And even when we do they still break things.
  7. I blame the internet for all this GAS. Was talking about it with Kevvo66 last night when he bought a bass off me, back in the day I went years with one bass and one amp, then along came the world wide web and that was it. New gear is always there to be drooled over.
  8. Kev bought my BTB 6 string, everything was sorted out quickly and easily. I dropped the bass off and can honestly say it was pleasure meeting Kev, top bloke. Another good basschatter and another good basschat deal.
  9. Nice bass! The funny thing is I specced the Maruszczyk from scratch, mostly from the configurator with a few changes after, I’d never seen a bass like that but knew what I wanted. Obviously I’m not as original as I thought.
  10. Blue Burst, all black apart from the blue bits.
  11. Sold, pending meeting up and actually exchanging bass for pound notes.
  12. Not quite the same, but I've got a Maruszczyk Jake with a Delano P-style and Humbucker. I think humbucker selection and placement are crucial, what you have to watch out for is that the humbucker sounds fat because it's a humbucker, and the P bass pickup sounds fat because of it's placement further from the bridge, so you can end with a surprisingly similar sound. Neither of them sounds like a J at the neck (though you might be able to tap a humbucker to do that?). I don't mind that, because I've got an Elwood as well with Huassel J pups, and my Jake is my play-with-a-pick rock out bass.
  13. It was a bit of a struggle getting the colour to come out in the pics, it is pretty close, maybe looks more blue in some pics when it's really blue with a bit of greeny-grey in there... hard to describe, but you can just about see it in the pics. In real life it's just very slightly less brightly coloured than the pics as well.
  14. Came across this in the spare room the other day and remembered I hadn't sold it yet! Price now dropped to £35 posted.
  15. That's what I call planning ahead! I'd also be surprised if it's still about then, although it wants a buyer who's after a budget six with flats so that does narrow the field down a bit. I'm feeling a bit sad about selling it now it's listed, it's been my main bass for a few years and I've done a bit of writing, gigging and recording with it, you get attached to them.
  16. Ibanez BTB456QM 6 String Bass with TI Flats Loads of bass for the money, especially the neck which plays really well and IMO is as good as the neck on basses costing 4 times as much. Fitted with a fairly recent set of Thomastik-Infeld flats, plus a full set of spare strings (mostly used older ones, apart from the A which is brand new). The strings + spares are probably worth £100 on their own, and being flats will last for a long time. Plus a Stagg hard case with foam cut to fit - it looks a bit scruffy but it works really well for holding the bass in place. Full specs: 35" scale 5 piece maple/walnut neck Rosewood Finger Board Basswood body w/Quilted Maple top 24 Medium frets Rosewood Finger Board Mono Rail II bridge Ibanez pickups Vari-Mid IIIB 18V pre amp String spacing is 17mm Made in Korea The controls are volume, blend and a 3 band EQ, plus the mid control is a stacked knob with frequency on the lower ring, so you can change the frequency that the mid control affects - this is surpisingly useful for dialling in a tone. I've used this bass for everything from sweet clean to dirty rock sounds. Strings are TI 33-136 (long scale, but they fit this, probably because of the mono bridge), like these: https://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/strings-c1/sets-c865/bass-guitar-c34/thomastik-jazz-flatwound-jf326-bass-strings-33-136-nickel-6-string-p844 - these are the flats I always use now, I've got some on my Maruszczyk Elwood and they play and sound amazing on both. In good condition, one or two small marks as you'd expect for its age. The strap buttons have been moved slightly to help the bass sit better. There are also 3 small holes in the back (I was experimenting with trying to get the bass to sit at more of a 45 degree angle to try and help my dodgy wrist). The strap buttons are for a pair of marvel strap locks, which I can include, or I can swap it back to the original strap buttons. I don't think it's worth trying to post a £300 bass, but I'm happy to drive a bit to meet up, starting from either BD20 (Silsden) or HX7 (Hebden Bridge). 17. I couple of bits of feedback ended up in other topics, so just for completeness: https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/322828-feedback-for-adamg67 and:
  18. I need some help understanding what Jazz even is. I like Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters, but that's because it's basically Funk. Presumably it's improvised, so that's why it's Jazz? I like some of the bluesy Jazz stuff, like Art Blakey.. "Moanin", but that's because it's mainly improvised Blues. Then there seem to be things that are Jazz that aren't so improvised, and also don't seem to borrow so much from other genres, like swing and big band, which are okay. Then there's a big chunk of "Jazz Club" style stuff I really don't like, which is very improvised an original but doesn't seem to groove much to me. So do I like Jazz? I have no idea.
  19. For some unknown reason, I’ve never listened to Vulfpeck until tonight. Love it when I find something new that’s that good.
  20. That might change tomorrow though.
  21. Another shout for Mark Studio 2 from me, I tried a few different things (not including UA though) and it came out comfortably ahead for my taste. I'm a bit of a MarkBass fan anyway though, my amp is a MarkBass Multiamp which has similar models (plus quite a few more), speakers are MB as well.
  22. For someone on a budget, don’t ever buy a new bass when the same thing can be had for half the price second hand. If the budget is £300, that’s a £600 bass, and that’s enough for something pretty decent.
  23. Just have a look at all the brands that people rave about on here, and then ignore those - they’re the ones people pay a premium for.
  24. Any thread that starts with 4 posts from the same person arguing with themselves is never gonna end well...
