1.
Yes, doing patch changes with the software is much better, as its quicker to move things about (you can drag the effects/amps between slots) and A/B any changes you make. If you have any issues with the USB it may be that the MA you have has not had the requisite jumper added. Its simple to do if not, I can post the PDF instructions here if needed.
I did need to add the jumper, that made me feel better about keeping a little bag of jumpers from old hard drives I found the PDF, thanks for doing that, very handy. With remote control for working on sounds plus the midi pedalboard for performing this thing is damn near perfect. The only reservation I have at the moment is a combination of the master volume thing and the DI levels. I have master volume set to manual, and the DI set to "end of chain" so that I can use a post amp EQ to trim the volume between patches, but like that it seems that the master volume controls the DI volume as well. So I have the MA plugged into my audio interface at home for recording, and the amp well down, but for a gig the master will be way up and that gives a *really* hot signal. Plus if we're 2 songs in and I can't hear myself on stage, if I turn the amp up I'll be turning the bass up on the desk as well - yes, I know the sound guy should deal with it, but it'd be nice if that didn't happen. I'm going to have a play with the DI settings, I don't know if I can use the amp post-eq setting plus the "use cab sim" and a level on the cab sim to keep the volume even and bypass master volume? Presumably the 2015 versions don't have this problem.
2. Been playing with the Multiamp some more, it really is excellent. The newest discovery which I havn't seen mentioned here is that quite a few of the amps have extra parameters on top of the gain and eq, just hit OK and you get a menu. This completely brought the "blue" tube amp to life for me. They're pretty obvious with most amps that have them, but I couldn't work out what the ones on the BB (I think, one of the Markbass ones anyway) were, They'e VLE and VPF, but I found it easily enough on the Markbass site:
The VLE and VPF are useful EQ filters that help you adapt your sound for different styles of music. The VLE (Vintage Loudspeaker Emulator) is a shelf EQ that cuts a wider and wider range of high frequencies as you turn it up. Markbass amps are very clear-sounding, and this filter has the effect of drawing you into the mix more, making your sound less present. It's kind of like an "old school" knob! The VPF (Variable Preshape Filter) boosts lows and highs, and cuts mids. Some call this kind of effect a scoop, a smiley-shape EQ, or an enhance knob. It's very effective for slap bass, pick playing, and driving eighth-note rock. These two filters can be combined for interesting effects. But remember that they are off when they are all the way counterclockwise--we suggest you start in that position and turn the filters up gradually, one at a time, to hear and understand what they do.
I've got the MarkBass MIDI pedalboard working a treat now, it's a bit fiddly to set up but once it's done it's very good. I'm starting to get some presets done for a couple of general sounds and for some specific songs and I'm finding that if you spend some time tweaking the subtler aspects you can get really, really nice tone.
3. Bump, I don't mind people making me a sensible offer on this (but still no trades, thanks, got to reduce the gear stockpile!)
4. dbx 160A mono 1u rack mount compressor Full details are here: http://dbxpro.com/en/products/160a I bought this based on recommendations on here and elsewhere and it is good, it's a fairly transparent musical compressor. All the features are on the site above, but the things that I think make it good are: - Hard or soft knee compression - Full ratio range from 1:1 through "normal" to infinity, and, as they say, beyond (to -ve compression). - The display - this is the thing I will miss most, the LED display on this makes it so easy to set up. - Gain (as on most) is very handy, I used this to get my Sansamp output up to the level I wanted for my power amp. I had this in the effects loop of my Sansamp, or you can have it before or after a preamp. A quick search on here came up with this: http://basschat.co.u..._hl__dbx%20160a with the 160A getting quite a few mentions (first and last pages). This is another casualty of my MarkBass Multiamp purchase, it's meant to replace everything but I was pretty tempted to keep this. It's less than a year old and in very good condition, it's been safely racked up in the same ABS rack the whole time. Boxed with manual and UK power lead. A few pics (click for larger versions): £175.00 posted, or collect from BD20 (Silsden).
5. This is still for sale, and I've checked the measurements again and it is sendable via Hermes. so I can now do it @ £34 posted.
6. Li'l bump, still for sale.
7. Dan bought an AGRO pedal from me and everything was done quickly and smoothly - top basschatter, exactly what this place is all about.
8. Now I've gone for a Multiamp, all my existing gear has to go, so here's a 4u Thomann rack case, very similar to everyone else's as far as I can tell. Rack rails at both ends (which I found really handy) and plenty of depth. It's this one: https://www.thomann....ack_case_4u.htm It's under a year old and in good nick, there are very slight scuffs on the "feet" on each side where it's been put down but otherwise not a mark on it. The ends fit nicely (and on either end, which isn't always the case, although I think they do like to be the right way up), butterfly clips are all fine. I can do it for £30 collected from BD20 (Silsden), or I can drop it off round Skipton / Keighley / Hebden Bridge / Todmorden, or if you're happy with it sent Hermes I'll chip in towards the postage and do it for the £30 + £4 postage. Some pictures, click for larger versions:
9. Thanks to my new MarkBass Multiamp, all my pedals have to go! First up is the Aguilar AGRO, they call it an overdrive but it goes all the way from just a boost through overdrive up to what I would call distortion, I used it somewhere in between for a really nice fully overdriven sound. Also has presence and countour for tone shaping, and is nearly indestructible in a heavy duty metal chassis. It has velcro on the base, but I have the rubber feet as well, and it's boxed. Full details here: http://www.aguilaram...oducts_agro.htm Some demos here: http://www.aguilaram...ro_settings.htm and plenty more on youtube. Looking for a straight £100 posted 1st class signed for. Not looking for trades, got to pay for the amp!
10. Price drop: £160 posted I think most people know what this is, but here goes: Tech 21 Sansamp RBI 1u Rack mount preamp, all the details are here: http://www.tech21nyc...ansamp/rbi.html The RBI I think is aiming for (and hitting) a very Ampeg sound, but you can dial down the presence (or the blend) to get a more classic tube amp tone as well. With the drive to play with as well it's got some excellent sounds in there, plus 3 band eq. There are a few demos on youtube, there's more of the BDDI which this is an improved rack mount version of (it has mid which the BDDI doesn't, and some other things). It's also got excellent features for live and recording, with effects loop with 50/50 mix option, seperate levels for line output and balanced XLR out (perfect for amp vs desk levels), rear inputs as well as the front instrument input, and footswitch input which can also chain to another RBI or an RPM. It's less than a year old (still under warranty until early december) and has been racked and looked after the whole time, it has a small screw mark on one rack ear where it's been racked up (which you don't see when it is racked up) but otherwise just looks like new. Boxed with manual and UK power lead. I've gone digital and bought a Markbass Multiamp, which is why this is up for sale. Some photos (click for big versions), sorry they havn't come out great I was struggling a bit for light today: £160 posted (Royal main 2nd class or Hermes, your choice), or collect from BD20, and try it out while you're here - I don't have a power amp at the moment but can run it through my recording rig. Not looking for any trades thanks, the Multiamp is meant to cure me of that!
11. Nearly forgot, volume wise this thing is LOUD. I never got master volume above about 9 o'clock!
12. I tried the multiamp at rehearsals on Friday and it passed that test easily. I didn't have time to set anything up in advance, and anyway I think you only really know what works when you try it with the band. I headed straight for the vintage bank and easily found 2 amps tgat worked for a warm clean sound (the Sunny US model) and a nice slight gritty sound (UK120, which I think us the Orange). Used them both flat and they sounded excellent, just what I was after. With some tweaking I'll have my tones as close to perfect as they're going to get. Just ordered the MB floor pedal, I only need it for this and don't need expression and Thomann had a B stock one. Rack case is ordered as well, I splashed out and went for an SKB one having tried the generic ones for other things. Looks like I'll be dropping all my currebt gear in the for sale section and going 100% multiamp! USB cable is on the way as well.
13. Mick was good enough to send me some stickers after I put out a call in the wanted section, and wouldn't even take the price of the postage. Top basschatter, the world needs more Micks.
14. I'll give the usb a go at the weekend and see what happens, it's a fairly recent one, was it the early ones that needed a jumper adding?
15. Thanks, it is V3 (I'll check but pretty sure). I noticed that there's a level on the cab as well for setting volume for studio / PA settings, does anyone do it that way for those? I'll have a play with configuring it via USB as well I think, I used to find that very handy when I had a Vox Tonelab for guitar
16. I've just bought Mark's Multiamp from this very site, I was very impressed with it, as far as I could tell every tone I could want is in there somewhere and they are proper versions. Really looking forward to getting to grips with this thing, and to trying it loud at rehearsals tomorrow night. One thing I wanted to check, I have 2 x 8ohm cabs (MarkBass Traveler as it happens), it's a mono amp, does it make any difference whether I chain the cabs and plug into the single speakon or just plug in to two jacks? Looking at the manual it says all the speaker outs are in parallel so I can't see that it will matter, I can plug them in separate or link them as a 4ohm and plug that in (I've only got speakon leads at the mo anyway). The other quick question I've just thought of, it will become obvious pretty soon anyway, but if I want the master to work across all patches should it be set to "manual" in the system menu?
17. I bought a MarkBass multiamp from Mark and couldn't be happier with how it's all gone. I had the chance to have a good play before buying and it was a pleasure meeting Mark and dealing face to face.
18. That's interesting, I am aiming to make my own so I plan to pull apart and mess around with the ones I find. I'll check out EZ Drummer 2, I don't know how much it overlaps with Steven Slate Drums which I already have but that does sound like a pretty cool feature. Although, partly I'm after new ideas.
19. Had a look at those and tried the free Groove Monkey pack, looks excellent! That will definitely keep me busy for a bit. Thanks!
20. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could recommend sources for good free MIDI drum tracks / loops? I'd definitely prefer MIDI as I want to tweak them and learn from them rather than just use them as they are. I'm looking mainly for blues, rock & funk beats but I fancy trying other influences as well. I'm guessing quite a few people have been through the same search so thought it was worth asking here. I much prefer playing bass along to some beats to get ideas going. I have had a search on here but I'm getting too many results about other things to find anything. TIA!
21. I tried quite a few filters recently and found the 3Leaf Proton to be the best for what I was looking for, very natural - but, quite fussy as far as sensitivity goes, I found switching from plucking to picking changed what it did quite a lot. The EMMA tracked really well and wasn't so fussy but I found it very trebly. That said, I ended up with a wah pedal instead.
22. I'm liking this a lot. I you wanted some suggestions, they wouldn't be about changing what you have, there might be little things you could tweak but it grooves very nicely. I'd be thinking about getting some vox on top of that, and playing with ideas for something to go into, so it was a but more verse / chorus - but that's just me, there's loads of directions you could take it in. Nice.
23. It should be pretty easy to work out if it's anything to do with polarity or if that's a red herring: If the pedal worked fine, you didn't rewire anything and then it stopped working, it's nothing to do with polarity.
24. Price drop, £120 posted, it really is just like new.
25. I've just tried this on my guitar, and it is no longer for sale! Yes, it keeps the bottom end, but it sounds much rougher on bass, and much smoother (but not in a dodgy hair metal way) on the guitar, really nice sound. I've got it running into an Amplitube Orange amp and it sounds amazing, even with a pitch shift (after the barbershop).
