Playing in an original band has opened my eyes
AustinArto replied to bassbiscuits's topic in General Discussion
Yeah really I was doing a band for five years on the indie label punk circuit and most of the bands - even the smaller ones - that we gigged with regularly had fanatical support. We, well, sort-of didn't, so much. But we didn't really fit that scene very well to be fair. The people who did like us were very nice, and the other bands on the scene all liked us and turned up to guest on our recordings and stuff. But these were bands that didn't sell a lot of records, most of them worked day jobs, but they were idolised by some. -
Am I the only one that gets annoyed by adverts for fake Fenders
AustinArto replied to Kex's topic in General Discussion
I think the Fender logo finishes off the look of a Fender-shaped headstock, and a lot of logos just don't look as good, so I quite like the idea of having a Fender logo to be honest. I wouldn't buy a Fender though, I just don't trust them. For the record my three current basses have Moses, Squier and Fender on the headstock. The "Fender" is a Mex P neck and the pickup is Fender too but the rest of the bass isn't. -
Playing in an original band has opened my eyes

Never played covers. Do you think I'd get something out of it? I suppose the hard part would be finding a band that didn't play music I hate. -
My first upright had already had a neck repair where it had broken at the heel, it was never a problem while I owned it and as far as I know it hasn't been a problem for the guy I sold it to either. I think most basses of a certain age have had the neck knocked off at some point.

I sing harmony and have a massive pedalboard so I end up at the front of the stage with plenty of space, but honestly I would rather skulk around at the back with the drummer and I have spent whole songs doing that before.

Envelope filter -Compresser - Which one first in the chain?
AustinArto replied to GM10's topic in Effects
Depends on the filter's envelope follower. If it sounds good first then compressor after, otherwise the compressor might help to give the filter a signal it can deal with. I'd always try filter first first though. -
Drummer kills it, proper dance musician.

I tend to have a LPF set around 250hz so it doesn't really matter what bass I've got. I'll play anything really, except Stingrays because they always feel a bit Playmobil for some reason.
Pick both up and play them. One will ( if you are very lucky) say ... yes I like you. You will know it's right when it talks back to you.
Hmm...

Bad drummers - how do you deal with it?
AustinArto replied to project_c's topic in General Discussion
I would move on. A band is only ever as good as its drummer. -
You could try a Planet Waves CT04. It has a really easy to read display
Until the blanking plate on the fascia comes loose and starts to rotate and it tells you you've tuned to H...
Just had a quick eBay search, and here's how it breaks down if you buy your own legit parts: body between 300 / 400 loaded neck c 340 ... So that's about a grand, plus import tax on the body and neck
Why are you paying £400 for a body and ordering it from outside the EU? Dumb thing to do, I got an Ash P body for forty quid from a bloke in Norwich. Unless you're determined to pay Fender Tax on everything? I'm not convinced that a lump of Alder is worth paying a premium for just because it's been through one of their CNC machines, frankly.
Building your own using parts from eBay may work out cheaper. (but it's also a crapshoot)
Tbh I think you have to go a long way wrong these days to end up with Fender-based instrument that sucks. I've built two from parts in the last two years, both very different (a graphite-necked Jazz and an Ash P), all with parts bought blind, both are lovely basses, I choose to play whichever one doesn't have knackered electronics at the time (I did all the soldering myself!) Really though, I don't think most players can spot a dog if it's set up properly, and most people's ideas of what makes the ideal bass are influenced massively by the bass they're playing now. I just did an hour's karting with my nephew, got into my car and nearly binned it at the first roundabout, then got flashed through the first speed camera. It's surprising how quickly humans adjust to stuff.
A mate of mine mentioned The Seahorses the other day, so walking home today I put it on for the first time in absolute years. Most of the songs on there, frankly, are better than the new Roses tune.
Chris Helme works in Gear4Music now, he sold me a DOD Meatbox the other day.

I love playing places like that.

Deep impact "reissue" - Not sure if this has had its own thread on here yet
AustinArto replied to Jimryan's topic in Effects
I'm sure that I've read this somewhere already but can you change patches via Midi or is the MIdi functionality just for programming via the editor?
You can control pretty much everything via MIDI I think, although they didn't use CCs for modulating all the params because there aren't enough CCs! You can also send it MIDI notes and play it from a keyboard or sequence it if you want. -
NBD - Warning "first bass" content... from 1964 (not great)
AustinArto replied to Grangur's topic in General Discussion
Nice warm fuzzy thread, thank you. My first bass was a "Satellite"-branded sunburst/Rosewood/blocked n bound Jazz copy I bought from McGrane's in Leeds for £50. It ended up on fire in my garden. A friend spotted an identical one on eBay last year, and I suggested it was not a good deal. They wanted some money for it. -
I agree the drums sound really dull, such a shame.

It sounds like Coldplay. :/ I think the UK is going to get snubbed even more than usual this year thanks to the referendum vote, but at least it's basically a Coldplay song that Europe will be rejecting, and I will have to admire them for it.

I thought if they had decided to record new material it was because they had some new material. Y'know, like, ideas or something? Poor. I loved them when I was 16. I also thought Second Coming was a good record, but this was a waste of tape.

I think there are still small enclaves of people who want to make prog music but nobody who still wants to listen to it. Apart from half the people I work with. Software developers...

Bought my SA Manta and a synth-modded OC-2. Very easy trade, friendly guy. Thanks Bert.
