Neck date 1979, pots and pups 1978. Therefore the dating indicates an assemble of 1979, although the serial number can - given Fender's notoriously shambolic numbering system - suggest 1980. The bass is 38 years old and looking remarkably fine and dandy for an old timer
thanks

Are there any neck, body cavity, pots or pup dates? The serial number seems to be S9xxxxxxx From experience these can often be 1980, 1981 or even 1982 manufactured basses You generally take the earliest date of manufacture (assembly) as being the latest date of any of the above components assuming them to be original to the bass Thanks and GLWS

Rich What are you doing? You prefer a jazz over a p bass? No it cannot be. Keep the bass, take the pup cover off - this will maximise mobility of your right hand - allowing you to get all those delicious tones that a p bass gives, yes with just one pup, by picking either side or over the pup. Keep at it It will reward you and you will soon be selling that jazz

Is there another Bass Selling Market better than BassChat.?
gareth replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Basschat used to be a great place to buy or sell gear 8-10 years ago and I made a lot of bass playing buddies through sales but as it grew in popularity, so did the amount of time wasters and jokers who think helpful comments about the gear your selling flourished. I used to buy and sell a lot on here about 7 years ago but just got fed up with meaningless messages and comments that potentially scupper your sale with personal unhelpful opinions. But having said that it's still a great place for more realistic prices as opposed to eBay.

I. Would have to agree with this I have been messed about on bc that much that I have given up selling basses and bigger items on the site it's not the sites fault but like every thing the site has grown and thus more idiots and lowballers on the site I'd rather pay the eBay fees and still get the same amount of money or more than I would on bc
Interesting thread I agree with these two comments -
Yeah I couldn't find one that matched!! It's close enough for a player tho
they do do reissue 70's guards with correct truss rod access or if you are lucky you sometimes see original ones on eBay
Was it the truss rod gap that gave it away or is it too shiny?
truss rod gap
Guard on the white one isn't original - I have the original and it's cracked, so I swapped it out
thought as much, cheers

So...why haven't you got a Trace Elliot then..

Great gear I had an all valve V6 and one sold for about £900 on eBay in Swansea last week. Someone got a wonderfully powerful and tone full amp Still got TE tranny amps and they give me all the power and tone I need nowadays -
I have two P's that are similar: a 64 and a 74. The 74 is a year of birth, and so special for that reason. I lucked out on both to be honest. In fact, I've probably used up all of my bass buying karma on them! Differences as far as I am concerned: - Neck profiles are very different. 74 has a standard 70's nut width (1.65") and a rounder C, the 64 is wider at 1.75" and slimmer front to back. - The 74 is maple, the 64 Braz Rosewood, and the 64 feels slicker, smoother and easier to move around on - Weight difference is negligible - the 64 is a touch lighter, but like I said, I lucked out getting a light 70's P.. - Finish feels different, with the 64 being nitro and the 74 not.. - Sound wise, the tone pot is more usable on the 64 and gives a more pleasing rolled off tone, and I'd say the 64 is generally a bit more 'refined' - it's a woodier sound. The 74 is clearly a hotter pickup and has more heft, but they both sound like classic P basses (duh!) They are both all original. They both make me very happy, for slightly different reasons. And the crunch question - which do I prefer? Well, only one gets hauled to rehearsals, used for recording, writing new bass lines and practice.. and that's the 64.
is the guard on the white one original?
