It's also not true that they sound the same, and certainly not true that they play the same. My P-bass may have cost about the same price as my new bathroom will but it's the best playing P I've ever had. If I was gigging on weekly basis though, I'd do Musicman.
i can't help thinking that ones opinion of any bass is coloured by knowing its value - you tend to prefer the more expensive one - maybe at some future bass bash, a true "blind test" could be arranged where testers are given various p basses covering all eras from 1957 onwards and all price levels?
It's looking like that's my plan. Are the newer rectangle cases they come with good? I'll probably put an EMG in any Pbass I get. I like how consistent they sound. I'm not one to be totally precious with my basses but with my old one I am getting that way. It has plenty of scars but I just want to minimise the chance of losing it. Thanks for all the comments.
g&l lb100 comes with emg pup
I haven't had any experience of 80's Fenders
Well I have and the USA vintage reissues made at Fullerton, 1982-1985 and then at corona and the Japan jv's are very well regarded. I am not personally a fan of the standard USA précisions made in the early 80's with bullet truss rods, 3 screw bridges and plain single ply guards.
Thanks for the information on the control guy's. It's really interesting to try and get to the bottom of the vintage basses. The bass featured on andy's site was my bass that i had on comission sale which is why the serial number is the same.
so when he marks it as "sold" he really means withdrawn?
Hi, This one is Blonde, It is quite hard to capture the colour in photographs but when you see it in the flesh , you know it is blonde. The 3rd & 4th picture from the top , is the closest match to the true colour. Olympic white basses , when originally made , are white in finish but in time often fade and the white can turn blonde. These really are great basses to play with a great P bass tone
Chris from above it appears the colour is Vintage White Andy Baxter sold one recently and also described it as blonde http://andybaxterbass.com/details.php?id=787
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would say thus is Olympic white. I don't think blonde was an option of Fullerton RIS. These Ps are great.
hi drums, hope you have better weather in Malaga than us here in the uk Here is a post from FDP Apr 26th, 2010 10:11 PM Edit Profile Print Topic Search Topic clast asks an interesting question...if CAR appears on AVS basses earlier than the late 80s. My original Fullerton catalog from January 1982, which introduces both the AVS line and the color charts for the reissues, lists CAR as one of the original Fullerton colors. The other finishes available for the 57 P were Vintage White, Black, LPB and Fiesta. It has been my experience that Fullerton basses across the board with original custom colors are rare, some colors more than others. George (This message was last edited by edmonstg at 05:58 AM, Apr 27th, 2010) You will understand from George's 1982 catalog that the white finish was neither blonde nor Olympic white but Vintage White, which as Chris has noted being nitro often fades to a lush blonde appearance.
Today i can't see myself paying a 1.41 exchange rate to buy from the UK (it would have to be a bargain or something i really want), especially having less of my salary available due to the constant rise of taxes. On the other way, the exchage rates are very attractive for anybody selling from EU in UK.
Exactly! This is why there are so many sellers from other European countries selling stuff on baschat - they now get 141 euros for every 100 pounds - compared with parity some years ago
A lot of the sellers also don't seem to be active in the BC community outside the "for sale" section either - you can come away with the impression that there are lot of EU-based trade sellers using BC as an outlet these days. Jon.
They also seem to act as a team by bumping and bigging up each other's threads
Something like this, not sure about the red though.... Actually, it's a cross between the two that I really want. The bass on the right with the pickguard and pup of the one on the left!
or perhaps one of these, this is long scale but they did them in short scale too

I think Leo had something when he created the precision, then the Jazz, then the stingray and then g&l. The proof must be in what people actually play. I don't see many Just, Sandberg, Lakland, Sadowsky or Wals. But I do see an awful lot of Fenders.
