Nice bass - this must have been a common conversion cos here's another one looks to be identical http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130952422958?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_121wt_1285
I've heard people say "don't buy a 5 string precision, it's not the same", but is that really true?
NOT TRUE as a fender precision fanatic and having extensively used precisions for a long long time, including the American fender precision 5 I can assure you that the American fender precision 5 sounds and play exactly like a precision except it has a 5th string - end of story

1968 Fender Telecaster bass (single coil)
gareth replied to wateroftyne's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
buy a sting bass or 51 reissue - original finish, original pup - much cheaper - ok no mojo - but will probably sound and play better - no brainer really - all this tosh about a beater bass -

also from web: - "As a broad generality V000001-V004000 denote a 1982 guitar, V004000-V010000 denote a 1983 guitar, and V010000-V016000 denotes a 1984 guitar. If you look at my fullerton inventory, you can see that this is just a broad generality. From my experience, any serial number below V016000 denotes a guitar made at the fullerton plant (1982-1984). Of course, there are exceptions to this generalization. I have come across many guitars with a serial number in the V012000's with a 1982 neckdate. I have also come across guitars with a V012000 serial number with a 1986 neckdate."
Serial number is in-line with '84, based on similar numbers on other instruments. Nice bass, good luck with the sale, have a free bump on me!
not wishing to contradict rick but here is a post from the fender forum - I don't know the exact dates, but I do know the year. If that is not enough, then discard the below info I gathered the past few weeks... V009329 '57 Reissue, 1983, 2-tone sunburst V005487 '57 Reissue, 1983, 2-tone sunburst V079046 '57 Reissue, 1994, colour unknown V002673 '57 Reissue, 1983, 2-tone sunburst V008526 '57 Reissue, 1984, 2-tone sunburst V019561 '62 Reissue, 1986, Lake Placid Blue V017966 '57 Reissue, 1986, 2-tone sunburst V025739 '62 Reissue, 1987, black V039881 '62 Reissue, 1988, black V033340 '57 Reissue, 1988, Lake Placid Blue Hope to have helped you a bit. I am very much interested in an updated version of the graph for use on... to me this indicates that the bass is mid to late 1980's
serial No is V034848
thanks for that - this bass used to be mine - it was made in the mid to late 80's - production of these basses did not start until 1982, so I think your 1981 date needs revising and was initially based in fullerton until 1984 when it moved to corona - hope this helps
To be honest gareth, that's exactly my issue, the slab is the main factor why I've not made, nor planning on making, any offer.
I wud go for a sting then - more comfortable - less popular (= cheaper) due the sting inlay
