Bolt-on versus neck-thru for slapping - opinions?
gareth replied to Sean's topic in General Discussion
absolutely no discernable difference -
Nope, no kidding. Give me an Ashdown over an Ampeg any time. Don`t like the sound from any of them that I have played through. As Munk says above it could be the amps in the studio that are guff. Jez
thanks for clarifying that before i put my foot in it. cos thats exactly my experience i had and gigged for about six months, twice weekly, an ampeg svt II pro and it was ......................... HORRIBLE BEYOND WORDS AND UNRELIABLE i had it serviced and fully re-valved, and it was .....................STILL, HORRIBLE BEYOND WORDS AND UNRELIABLE The tone was coarse and aggressive and it always (amazingly seemed under-powered) Glad to note that I am not alone in de-testing ampegs
they have an Ampeg SVT and I think it sounds crap. I have tried several different Ampeg heads and they all sound crap when I play through them. Jez
your joking?

So I went to see Jack Bruce & His Big Blues Band Last Night...
gareth replied to Schnozzalee's topic in General Discussion
sorry but i have never ever rated him i guess back in the days of cream, the improvisational element of his playing was new and his approach to bass at that time was in contrast to a lot of other things going on at that time don't like his tone, the basses he uses - saw him on tv a few years ago noodling on a fretless and the intonation was appalling if his hearing is failing he should stick to fretted basses not positive a know -
fender precision plus a TE V6 + TE 4x10 + 1x15 or more recently Musicman HD130 + TE 1x15 fender p n valves - can't be beat
Gosh never seen one like this before. Did they do the deluxe in 1983 ? ( I thought the top end was Elites and RI's at that time.) Whats the serial ?
yes i have never seen a bass like this - it is certainly not original the seller has explained the modifications and it looks like the intention was to re-create/update the bass to something approaching the later precision deluxes with the double sized jazz pup presumably a lot of routing has been necessary which unfortunately makes it hard to return the bass tom its original spec
Looks great. What's the weight?
about 10lbs - not a heavy one
Trades? Gareth.
definately considered but only looking for fender, G&L and EBMM - or possibly (I'll give it Roger one more chance) a sadowsky mertro or NYC
Looking at your gear in your sig, I'm sure if you wanted to do some trading you could get one! I tried a load. They were well made and felt great. - and this goes into the sound, but the ones I played were not exceptional musical instruments and sounded very flat until the (brilliant) preamp was engaged. Personally if you gave me £1700 a metro would not be on the shopping list. But I would try a few more to check.
I have had three metros and was unimpressed with all of them I do agree the pre-amp is great when used with jaz pups, which is what it was designed for. So hey, why not save some doh, get a sado outboard pre-amp (used £100 to £150) and use that with a fender jass - as god intended
