1. Missed Lemmy off but I don't honestly know who I'd replace. I'll have to cheat and go for 11
2. In no order Abraham Laboriel Dr Das Geddy Lee Jaco Pastorius Larry Graham Steve Harris Charles Mingus Dean Garcia James Jamerson Geezer Butler
3. You need to check these guys out too. http://www.wavesfactory.com/ Premium quality Kontakt libraries for essentially buttons. As to VSTs, bit pricey-er but if you buy reverbs from http://valhalladsp.com you'll soon wonder how you lived without them.
4.
Sofas and arses get better when they get older?
Of course you know I meant the formation of an arse groove being similar to neck wear fitting in with how you play etc... But I'm now going to say that old droopy arses are the best. Especially leaky ones.
5. Also see: Sofas and arses.
6. Looking like ACG. Bad timing on that Overwater, it's a great price for a great bass but I've already paid for a bass without playing it this month (ok, fair it's not actually made yet, but still..) and I really want to have something in my hands before I pay for it this time.
7. When I was about 20 there was this crazy blue half-fretless 6 string in a music shop in Leeds. I kept looking at it in awe until it disappeared. Then there was this crazy 9 string bass which I kind of wanted cos both it and I were nuts. In retrospect I'm quite glad I didn't get either, but at the time (this is 20-odd years ago mind) I was gutted.
8. As some of you may know I put an order in a couple of weeks back for a 5 string fretted Maruszczyk Jake but I'm off to the bass guitar show in a couple of weeks and would like to come home with a nice fretless. Thing is I'm only there from 10AM to 1PM due to commitments so I can't go and try everything out so... With my somewhere-between £1000 and £1500 budget, which stands should I check out? Any recommendations?
9. I'd bin it. Get something else with some decent storage in it. 2Mb these days... christ.
10. Well, My main bass I got in 94 and it's frets certainly haven't got better with time. That said I've never took the thing to a luthier to do any work on it, I've just cleaned the fretboard and body a few times.
11.
Though some fretless basses get much more mwah than others.
Yeah, I had an old mexican fretless jazz that wouldn't mwah unless you put rounds on it. Sold it off in the end. Hated the thing.
12. Nice. Got to love a Stingray.
13.
My problem is middle age and stamina. Do you offer a Captain America-style genetic engineering package?
Aw man I hear that. Plus that whole job house and family thing getting in the way of good practise.
14. When I get angry on stage I beat the sh*t out of my bass until my fingers bleed. Does that count as wrong?
15.
I'd rather listen to a badly played kazoo than a chichéd chorus-drenched fretless bass.
Two exceptions (but only because they kicked that sh*t off) Continuum by Jaco and Wherever I lay my hat because Pino nailed it.
16.
Jaco's first album has chorus on just one track IIRC.
True
17. Also maybe tapewounds will have less mwah on them than chromes.
18. The seven stages of social networking 1) Free, but nobody uses it 2) Free and catches on 3) Free and used by loads of people 4) Mild paywalls introduced 5) Crazy Paywalls Introduced 6) Everyone leaves 7) Company closes down wondering how they failed.
19. So basically what you're saying is you were born and they started making basses ready
20.
But his intonation is so bad it sounds like he's using chorus....
You're not wrong.
21. Or one of my favourite players: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPSriFxA6r0
22. Honestly.. billions out there.
23.
Well if anyone has any links to someone playing clean fretless bass playing with no effects at all I'd be interested in hearing what it sounds like.
I googled fretless bass... first video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdV5yrqWEDA No chorus.
24. There's loads of fretless stuff without chorus out there, but I can see the appeal of putting chorus on there, Chorus by its very nature smears the exact note frequency you're playing so can make your duff fingering sound more accurate than it is.
25. Get an upright maybe? Bound to have been a lot of those made then and playing uprights is a ton of fun.
