I've not seen a review for one of these so I think it's about time. So what is it? The Bass attack pedal is in essence a DI, preamp, saturator and EQ. Something that on paper sounds boring but in practise will pretty much rock your socks off I got one of these when I bought my NXT5 EUB because it needed a hi-z input or it lost all the bass, I also wanted something to grit up the tone/ do a bit of mild compression. Of course the bass attack does a lot more than this. Range of sounds/versatility One of the big things the bass attack brings is an exceptionally variable harmonic distortion, it can be enough to just warm the sound slightly or it can go all the way up to filth. If you're looking for a hard-as-nails distortion, this probably isn't what you need but it can go pretty damn far in that direction. I've used it on EUB to make it sound more like a DB, on a P with flats for a more 60s warmed up sound and on a Stingray clone with rounds for hard punk. The Bass attack delivers, no worries. The EQ is fairly simple. There's a really nice bass, a treble and presence which go way higher that you'd ever really need (unless you want your muddy bass with a broken tone and 20 year old strings to sound fizzier than an alka-seltzer) and also there's a "shape" function you can turn on or off. From my experience with it, the shape works similar to a band-reject filter but seems to have a much more pronounced effect on the sound than any band reject I've used before. It could be because it's put before the saturator in the signal path, so it also alters all the harmonics afterwards Build quality Mostly metal and rubber it's took a beating while I've owned it and looks no worse for it. It'll survive being hammered on stage and the footswitches feel nice. The pots have a nice feel, although mine are now a bit sticky due to a guitarists pint (hardly hartke's fault) What don't I like? Well, I'd like more EQ options as I tend to use this as my amp-replacement straight into the PA, but it's not designed to be an ultra-parametric EQ so there you go. A sweepable boostable mid would have been nice though and maybe a higher headroom on the drive so it can go nuts. Also, it has no built in noise gate so if your pickups are noisy, the saturation will make them more so, but that really is nitpicking. Conclusion and price The Bass attack isn't a cheap pedal, but it is definitely cheaper than it sounds. You can pick it up for about £70 and its tonal shaping possibilities, while not endless, are more than enough for me to recommend it to anyone, especially if you DI to P.A. but want a bit more control over your sound.

Hello everyone. I'm based in St Ives so preferably near there but I'm after some lessons in Cambridgeshire. My level: Intermediate/Advanced (I think) with some holes as I've self taught for years, so there's likely a lot of bad habits that need to be broken. What I want: I'd like to learn decent jazz playing and theory, improve my timing and have someone to kick my lazy arse into practising. If there's anyone near there then please get in touch. Thanks.

My gear stops me going out and robbing garages. There. Justified.

I have a custom with a Bartolini in it. When I strike the E string, horses keel over as if they've just been punched in the balls. You could say they "feel scooped" compared to a P, but it's more accurate to say Ps have a massive lowmid hump. It's a different sound and it can be a real monster.

Being someone who's only ever played in one cover band and the rest being originals I have to say that yes, there is snobbery but the covers band was probably the least pressure and the most fun. 10 people turn up at a covers gig? Meh, who cares, I'm being paid and I'm enjoying playing it. 10 people turn up to see your original band? Stress, despondency, sadness at the promo you did. I guess people see less "artistry" in a covers band. There's an argument for that, not a 100% true one but there's an argument. As I get older the idea of playing in a covers band and just having a bit of fun is more and more attractive.
Mine is home. Far exceeding my expectations to be honest. It's an absolute monster! Plays like a dream. Looks incredible, even if the wife doesn't understand why it has a reversed headstock. Never been happier, just can't wait for practice now. Roll on Monday!
WARGLE! Roll on Late April/May/June/Whenever
Looks like lovely workmanship - I just wish I liked a single shape they make: sadly, I don't like Fender lookalikeys, and the others (singlecuts and the..Frog, is it?) don't appeal either.
The way I understand it you could ask them to make whatever you like.

This is why they're big everywhere.

Also I didn't mention... loving that cutaway on the back for the top frets.

Looks like between 12 and 16 weeks from what i can gather. I'm a week in so far.

The other half doesn't know yet (BTB 1606 dtf premium)

I wouldn't want to be your balls. -
I've only just ordered one and I want to order another... God flipping damn it. I've got enough to go to the bass guitar show and come home with a fretless, if there's nothing there that rips my face off I might wait until this arrives and order a second one.
Let's not forget that the original stereotype of the band playing behind chicken wire is an American one.
Fair point well made.

Just to make people in this thread grumpy I'm listening to the Yeesus album.

When it comes down to it I'd rather work with someone crap who listens to criticism and is willing to improve than someone who is good and gets all defensive and refuses to fix their mistakes like that.

Saying it's not hip hop is like saying nu-metal isn't metal. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you're all of a sudden allowed to decided it doesn't fit in the genre.
That's too bad. I love being around people ,love our bar gigs. In all these years. I've never played to what you guys call a roomful of drunks.
Yeah, but you don't play in the UK. There's a huge get drunk/fight culture in the UK so when you're in a room full of a drunken mob there can be a vibe of sh*t getting ready to kick off. I think it's because in the UK we bottle so much of our anger and emotions up and there's such a pub culture that people get drunk and it comes out. In America people seem to be culturally allowed to actually express their emotions. Vikings and Romans, that's the difference you're looking at. We're a bunch of nordic grumpy bastards who are dissatisfied with our lot who don't even get to jump on a longboat and pillage small countries any more.

How The Beatles still grip Liverpool ...

I still find it weird, people romanticising it. That's where I used to go shopping for Cds and get pissed at a weekend, and before I went there, I'd move my wallet from my jeans pocket to my coat pocket so it didn't get pinched. -
I hear ya, but a lot of posts from a beginners view seem like they are in a foreign language. I do search the forum but sometimes I feel like asking what would be considered by most as dumb questions. Esp when it comes to amps, cabs and effects. I actually had no idea what a cab was until I went into a local music shop . Dont get me wrong this is not a knock at the forum, just a thought that's all. As we all go along on this journey we all learn
Absolutely, but don't be scared to ask. I'm fairly certain nobody will jump on you for mixing up what the nut and the bridge are (I remember mixing those up) or wondering what string gauge means. We were all new once and we're all (mostly) mature enough to not just go STFU N00b. So don't worry, if you're confused just ask in here, people will answer, it'll all be good.

Poll, how many many basses have you got?
keefbaker replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
I have a few, they're all different though. I have an active custom one, a Japanese P, a bass VI, a NXT-5 EUB and a 5string that I'm planning to replace with my Jake when that arrives. So in my case they're all validly different. I am also planning to add a standard fretless to that. -
UNF!!!
