Oh. No way.!! that's very sad to hear. One of my heroes was Al J. A very unique sound. One of the masters of soul music.
A bit of a line up here. (Steve Gadd, Marcus Miller, Eric Gale, Joe Sample, Paulinho Da Costa, Neil Larsen, Al Jarreau) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ABfDgTJi-o

Retired because of ill health a couple of weeks back. Unfortunately, passed away this morning. Very sad. Certainly one of my favourite singers/musicians. Always worked with the very, very best.
to be fair the thread title is 'cover version over originals', no mention of better, think some people on here are posting suggestions for the worst cover version, or a cover that was nowhere as good as the original
I think the OP was suggesting what cover version one would prefer over the original. (well, my take on it).
What songs do you like a cover version better than the original?
You should start your own compilation series - Now That's What I Call Cloth Ears - some dreadful choices there
The bit that frightened me was, 'For Starters'.

Vanessa Williams doing her Elmo in Grouchland thing..... Nice Fretless Bass playing. http://youtu.be/wHSY912Kq-s
A little recording of it here:
I really like the Bass sound, along with lovely playing and a unique composition (very original and reminds me of what an electric modern day, Carl Stalling piece would sound like) Not keen on the looks though. It does look like it would be at home in 'Looney Tunes' or 'Merrie Melodies' productions. Good stuff.

It don't get any better than Aretha. So many top, top tunes from her. Her phrasing was just so Rhythmical. To think she was still singing great at 72!!...Amazing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cF0tf35Mbo Slightly OT, but Al Jarreau has also just called it a day (because of ill health).

A close one, but this cover of "The Boxer" is fantastic. Some of the Harmonies are terrific. To be honest, I don't need any reason to post anything by Alison Krauss. She is a class Musician. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy9B43ERrbw
wheres pmt?
Judging by some of these reactions - Right here in this very thread.
Mornin' - Al Jarreau
Classy (Cheese). AJ just announced he has to retire from touring, because of ill health. In hospital at the moment.

I have really been getting into a Peruvian/American guy called Tony Succar. He has put together a project of a bunch of Michael Jackson Tunes. I don't necessarily think the covers are better, but they give me a real buzz the way they have been arranged and played. Phrasing, timing, feel and musicianship of the highest order (IMO of course). http://youtu.be/S2u6zVB3Djc http://youtu.be/CNO7AduUp-8

I thought I would pop this in here. Four young Ladies with some delightful harmony singing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNHa2580Kwo&index=211&list=WL And on the subject of harmonies, this arrangement certainly gave me an eargasm. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ggx8bgJ4Q38&feature=share&list=PLoIQEr7Oj68LtMCFU5-UbasosNgkeIr2z&index=14
Wonderful. Often wonder what Jane saw in that chain smoking old tramp though.
Maybe because she had a constant supply of fags on tap?

Top Roquefort, with some splendid Bass from Russ Stableford (I think). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3Fa4lOQfbA
Not just A drummer. She was usually THE drummer. A bloody good one, too.
The whole Karen Carpenter Drumming thing is quite interesting. Hal Blaine (Studio Drummer on most of the recordings) has a few little stories. http://www.jazzwax.c...-carpenter.html There is also some interesting stuff about the live shows/tours where Carl O'Brian was the regular Drummer. I believe Karen's Drumming was a solo feature during the shows. Some stuff here about the live shows. http://boards.straig...ad.php?t=213245 What ever the real story, she certainly was a very talented Musician with a stunning voice. Just been doing a bit of digging - It seems she was the Drummer on 'Please, Mr Postman', and certainly played all the Drums on the first Carpenters album (1969 - Ticket To Ride), along with some Bass. https://en.wikipedia..._to_Ride_(album)
How can the words Great and Jazz be in the same sentence lol
Easy.... .A chord in yer left hand and a chord in yer right hand = A Great Big Jazz Chord.
Did he get a beer from the rider too??
Thankfully, no. I dread to think what carnage would have happened if he had been drinking.
the OP says the current guitarists will do it..
Ok.. Just spotted that. Even more daft. Edit: I hope the original Bass player ain't a Basschat member and is reading this thread.

So who is the Bassist that is recording this new album, if the other guy was not wanted ? It that is not you, someone else must be involved ? Or have I misread the OP ?
-
there seems to be some questions about the validity of some of the stories, i.e. did they really happen ?
Well, that's Jazz. There has to be an element of improvisation.
Didn't think about loss, and guess that will be more of an issue touring than gigging at the Tickled Trout
Theft as well. During a sound check (outside show) in Gibraltar, a Monkey ran off with our MD's, Piano mains lead, along with a slice of his Pizza....
Now, not wishing for this to appear like a trolling post, surely the point of cables like OBBM removes the necessity of having "been doing this for years" in that you buy ones that last?
Possibly ten years ago, he made a ten foot cable. A couple of years later, one for an Amp and Speaker Cabinet. A couple of years later, some Patch Cables. Then some spares etc. And all still in use? I presume that's what he means.
