Yes, that video is great. She is one of my favourite singers. Everything about her is class. Apart from the great intonation and phrasing, she has a lovely tone to her voice. The band in the video are rocking as well.

Apart from being an education from the guys I was working with, it was terrific fun musically. It don't get anymore 'One' than that.

Although James Brown is associated with a lot of (downbeat) 'One' on every bar (his sort of funk trademark) it's not definitive. Funk music has a lot of syncopation (or can have), 'One' is just the anchor point, after a one bar/two bar phrase/riff/motif etc. (all IMHO of course). Certain Latin/Cuban styles don't sit well with straight/rock players, because of the heavy, natural syncopation and lack of a strong 'One' The middle of this (03:00) is a great example. Yes, you are right about the examples. A bit foggy, but at the end of the day, most of them seem to be 'happening', with some serious rhythm sections and top line players, not to mention great pocket playing. So, that will do for me... I suppose for me, I tend to like tunes and changes, rather than humping about on a couple of chords. Not to say. I don't like listening to the likes of the Meters etc, I do, very much. There have been some tracks posted I have enjoyed and not heard before. So, not really going to turn my nose up at a bit of music genre bending.

'The One' can be any note, root, Ist/2nd Inversion etc... But it's dead on beat one of the bar, not two or three, or four for that matter. I thought It was as simple as that. Unless we are talking about some Reggae, or even Ska patterns....Where you can have a 'One Drop'....

Yes, that is an excellent one from Victor. The phrasing and sound on the head/tune, reminds me of Herbie Hancock singing through his Vocoder (very lyrical). Same with the solo, very Synth sounding and again, played and phrased like a Keyboard player.
