1.
He's got a couple of gems from his solo albums but ,for me, Victor's best work is with the Flecktones where he's very much a bass player in a band as well as a virtuoso musician showing off his best chops.
Ha Ha. Bela just floors me every time I hear him. Lovely nod to Miles on this track. I know VW tends to get a panning on this site, but for me he does it.
 2.
All good advice above. The majority of songs are in G, D,A and E. There are a few in other keys. Get on you tube and listen for the following genres: Jigs, Reels, Hornpipes, Polkas and Waltzes. They can be English, Irish, Scottish, American but to name a few. That covers most bases apart from one we used to do 3/4, 4/4, 5/4 6/8 transitions in one tune. You will be driving the dance in that people will step / dance to your beat so my advice is keep it simple, light and tight. Most bands use music (or used to when I played regularly in the ceilidh circuit). As mentioned earlier usually two or three tunes with A / B sections repeated then change tune and have a key key changes in a dance.
This really. If you don't know the tunes, ask the bandleader for a list and keys. Then do your homework. This is one gig (not any gig really) where you don't want to be dropping out of verses or peddling notes why you work out chord changes. People will notice, this type of gig people want a solid foundation for dancing. And you want that call back, don't you?
 3. Add the fact that he is a great sight reader and good quick listening ears along with his tight playing, groove and timing, you can see why he was also hired on a lot of TV series themes and film scores. One of the very best. Top, top player. Good OP video, thanks for posting - I have never seen that one.
 4. I have a Jazz with Barts and a Bart Preamp, and the sound is anything but "dark". Very creamy, smooth sound with plenty of zing. My five string has Delano's, Jazz pup at the neck, and MM at the bridge. The MM pup can be switched to single pup, so like a Jazz configuration. This Bass has an Aguilar preamp, and to my ears, this set up (in single coil mode) is darker sounding than the Bart set up (above). But again that might be other factors, woods, finger boards etc.
 5.
Agree entirely with Terrible, terrible, terrible. but not the second - why not mess around with them, most (I'll exclude the French one) are so terrible, poor tunes, have dated badly, and are generally a bag of jingoistic nonsense.
Agree. I thought this (link below) was a creative, well arranged, rousing over the top, big silver screen, Hollywood, chord substituted extravaganza (just missing the Broadway style show girls). Clearly where Flea got his motivating, artistically crafted, moving version from. http://youtu.be/S2HNH9orkTQ
 6. I suppose with (music) software, it would be regarding idiots selling pirate software. But you can get round that with Software that requires a dongle, or vendor software that allows for the transfer of a license.
 7.
Thanks Lowdown. Tried editing my post and left out the "s" as TheGeek suggested. Did not seem to work though.
Sometimes, deleting the link and then pasting again without the 's' during an edit works
 8. I have this album, I still dig it out and have a listen from time to time. Yes, it is a good listen. Here you go. http://youtu.be/RfQ1KsCnFcU
 9. Dennis Smith using a Wal in 1984. 02:55 there is about 20 seconds close up of him. http://youtu.be/XeqloRjHKBo
 10.
I couldn't possibly make any comments about that!!
I didn't really mean to be offensive. It's just I know a couple of Rockerbilly Bassists who mockingly refer to their Slap technique as just "Twatting It", and they are excellent at that style. Can you throw a rope ladder down this big hole, please?
 11.
(I use 'VideoPad' for simple video editing; it's free for home use...) VideoPad ...
So, what's the difference between free/home/master editions? Commercial use? https://secure.nch.com.au/cgi-bin/register.exe?software=videopad
 12.
I'm not learning the upright bass just for one recording session.
Judging by the Bassists in those YouTube videos, neither did they. They are just twatting the thing.
 13. He certainly likes hogging all the solos.
 14. Fred bump. Just seen this on Facebook. Looks like the 80's and Dennis Smith is using a JD. It sounds lovely. (looks like he is a mastering engineer these days, also has him down for 'The Riddle'. Not sure how accurate this page is though. https://www.discogs....-Dennis-Smith-2 A rearranged classic.
 15.
just seen the Stairway thread have I plagiarised it?
Post of the day.
 16. I know this studio, it's not far from where I live. There is an interesting set of YouTube Videos, if you want to get a feel for the place. http://youtu.be/gQUa_w2Flc4
 17. Heard this band before, I thought they were really good, although I think they had a different Bassist at the time. Yes, nice tone and a groovy playing on the OP video. Some band info here. They do a lot of work in Europe. http://skerryvore.com/
 18. So, if you use the Video, does the entry need to be loaded up onto YouTube/Vimeo for the voting? or just the Audio cue up on Soundcloud?
 19. I must say, Chuck Rainey (along with Anthony Jackson) is at the top of my faves list. They just have that magical 'something special' vibe going on.
 20.
That is really something, talk about what doesn't kill you... I take it this was, er... a while back? Would you do it now?
Would I do it now? You are 'aving a Giraffe!, ain't you? Mid through until late 70's. A couple of the US bases, even had chicken wire around the stage.
 21.
In the summer we can have 3 four hour gigs in one weekend. Last summer we had 2 four hour gigs on the same day. A 2-6 and a 9-1. It's fun. Blue
You light weight!! I used to do tours of American military bases in Germany, which would be 5x45 mins per night, every night of a tour!! And 6x45 mins a night in a club in Denmark, six nights a week. I dunno...some people ain't lived... Carry on Rocking Blue.
 22.
Six months on upright and they all feel small.
It has to be this.
 23.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNj9bXKGOiI
I loved the slap sound from Marcus back in the early days (this track). More throaty, maybe before he had the preamp fitted? Similar sound on the Dave Grusin album 'Mountain Dance', which was recorded about a year earlier. I find that musical ideas just pour out of MM. His Fretless solos are very musical and lyrical.
 24. Most of the people I expected to be there, are. And In the order I expected from 'Rolling Stone'. Considering the amount of top TV/Film/Album sessions and credits (100's) they have, I am surprised that Carlos Vega and Harvey Mason are not mentioned. Hey ho, it's just a Brahms and Liszt, list.
