1.
I don't know of him, but I presume Mr.Ferguson is the one in the grey suit who splits one of the first handful of notes he plays in the first link and plays equally as irritatingly in the second one? Pretty much everyone in both his bands outshines him.
You have not heard of him, so a reasonable assumption from the above clips, But in all fairness, there was more about Maynard Ferguson than a couple of split notes and a Grey Suit. Did a bit in his long career, and quite respected amongst Musicians from that era. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maynard_Ferguson
 2.
though to be fair the bass player comes out of it better than most.
No better, no worse than the other players. They all do a fine job, there is some seriously tight section playing go on, especially at that tempo, plus some good arranging. It must have been hard to play that tune with BR crawling all over it. Seen BR a few times back yonder. Always had terrific musicians with him. To me, some of the arrangements worked great, some just didn't happen, usually because of the express train speeds he liked to play at.

 4.
I've just started using Notion on my laptop, and might be getting an iPad shortly. How do you input music on the iPad? On the laptop, my current preferred method is step entry using a mini-keyboard for the pitches and the laptop keyboard for the durations.
Step input using the virtual keyboard. You can swip left and right to change octaves. Once you get used to it, for speed, you can use fingers on one hand to change note and rest value and fingers on the other hand for note entry. You can also tap onto the stave for entry. Notion on the iPad is very in depth regarding features. It exports the Notion files into the desktop version with absolutely no problems, everything as should be. I am using an iPad Air, so regarding real estate, I am not sure how an iPad mini would work out. Had to use my phone for the picture. I wish there was a screen capture app for the iPad, or is there? 5. Some of the best Orchestra Midi mock ups I have heard. Mainly done with VSL (and some other libraries layered in). These are mainly well know classical pieces, but some originals in there as well. Carles is a top, top composer for media music work and really knows his stuff. https://soundcloud.com/carles-piles
 6. Stagg. mains and battery operated. http://www.djmmusic.com/p-19598-stagg-clip-on-orchestral-music-stand-light.aspx
 7. Yep, loads over the years and generally great fun. Everything from straight down the middle to Latin Jazz. Does help when the band is full of good players and good readers, otherwise it can be like wading through sludge.
 8.
Awesome - Thanks. Hans Zimmer seems like a genuinely nice guy with a great outlook on things! I've started trawling through Vi Control as well, some really useful stuff there! Sorry to have to ask this - I have tried finding out but cant get a clear answer - with the VSL libraries do you know if you need to buy the sampler software on top or do you get a basic version with the samples?
You get the free Vienna Instruments player with any of the samples purchased. You can upgrade to Vienna Instruments Pro for more features. Also you get the free Vienna Ensemble player as well, which is a server hosting mixer. Again you can upgrade to VE5 Pro for extra features. The basic Ensemble player gives you 16 virtual midi ports per instance. So 256 midi channels hosted outside your DAW = no CPU hit on your DAW. It also purges all samples no in use. On the software page at VSL, there are plenty of tutorial videos if it sounds confusing. VSL player (free) https://vsl.co.at/en/Software/Vienna_Instruments#!Video_Demos VSL player pro https://vsl.co.at/en/Vienna_Software_Package/Vienna_Instruments_PRO#!Video_Demos VSL ensemble (free) https://vsl.co.at/en/Software/Vienna_Ensemble#!Video_Demos VSL Ensemble Pro https://vsl.co.at/en/Vienna_Software_Package/Vienna_Ensemble_PRO#!Video_DemosDid There are some amazing sounding customer Midi Mock up scores worth checking out. All done with only VSL Instruments. https://vsl.co.at/en/MUSIC
 9.
I play Jazz. No-one stays 'til the end.
Could it be, the other band members are trying to tell you something?
 10.
I packed my gear away whilst Bad Manners were playing once, Buster looked at me with daggers, thought he was gonna strangle me
Sounds like he was ready to bust a blood vessel.
 11.
I used to play with old drummers (from the days when gigs at certain venues would end with the National Anthem) who told me they'd finish the anthem on just bass and hi-hat and would pack the rest as they played the anthem.
I have been on gigs in the past, were that has happened. True story. On a function at the Dorchester, with a (inexperienced function) dep drummer. After the last number, the band leader, with his fake smile, turned, faced the drummer and pointed at him. The Drummer stood up, and took a bow. The band leader said to him, "The Queen....you c*#$!" For those unaware, it would be the cue for the snare roll.....Lol...
 12.
If anyone outside of the bass playing community reads this thread , what would they think
The same as most/some from the Bass playing community, reading this thread.
 13.
I bet she was surprised
Indeed, as was Robin.
 14.
Probably not the best example you could have chosen, given that most bands would struggle to make the first chord sound like the record! http://www.beatlesbible.com/features/hard-days-night-chord
Ah, thaaaat...chord. Not been discussed for a while on Basschat (unless it's in the curse thread). http://youtu.be/gwfH9oAiPH0
 15. Blimey, you don't need no FX to get the tone (none on the original). Just sing the vocal line if a keyboard player can't be arsed to bring up a scat patch. It must be the easiest vocal part in the history of singing for a Bassist to sing! You are singing what you are playing. I should think there are folks who could fart that line in the bath. That's it, take a bath to the gig.
 16. Well done Lurks, good stuff....
 17. Beautiful playing. Because of the high notes, I think the Bass is solo tuned. Up a tone, F# B E A? https://www.facebook.com/mikyung.soung/videos/894115770654984/ Check her page out - plenty more.

 19.
Thanks for the suggestions!
Hey TenLetters, I mentioned getting over to VI Control for some good advice about the serious String (Orchestral) Libraries I forgot to mention that you get some good people checking in there. At the moment you can get to hang out with Hans Zimmer..... The thread is about an interview between his daughter and himself, and he has started chipping in - His name is 'Rctec'. 20.
EDIT: On further reading their page, they're not even publishers. All they seem to do is be a troll and collect fees when they feel entitled to. They're the lowest of the low.
That's a bit unfair. Are you aware of what PRS do for Musicians and Composers, or why? It might be worth having a look here, it's part of what they do, and try to achieve. https://www.prsformu...essarchive.aspx
I'm optimistic... SoundCloud are already licensed with the US rights societies, but seem to need a bit more pressure to comply in Europe.
Yes , promising.
 21. Looks like PRS and Soundcloud are having a domestic. Just received this Email. "PRS for Music to me 24 minutes agoDetails Dear Member, PRS for Music begins legal action against SoundCloud After careful consideration, and following five years of unsuccessful negotiations, we now find ourselves in a situation where we have no alternative but to commence legal proceedings against the online music service SoundCloud. When a writer or publisher becomes a member of the Performing Right Society, they assign certain rights to their works over for us to administer, so it’s our job to ensure we collect and distribute royalties due to them. SoundCloud actively promotes and shares music. Launched in 2008, the service now has more than 175m unique listeners per month. Unfortunately, the organisation continues to deny it needs a PRS for Music licence for its existing service available in the UK and Europe, meaning it is not remunerating our members when their music is streamed by the SoundCloud platform. Our aim is always to license services when they use our members’ music. It has been a difficult decision to begin legal action against SoundCloud but one we firmly believe is in the best, long-term interests of our membership. This is because it is important we establish the principle that a licence is required when services make available music to users. We have asked SoundCloud numerous times to recognise their responsibilities to take a licence to stop the infringement of our members’ copyrights but so far our requests have not been met. Therefore we now have no choice but to pursue the issue through the courts. We understand SoundCloud has taken down some of our members’ works from their service. With our letter of claim, we sent SoundCloud a list of 4,500 musical works which are being made available on the service, as a sample of our repertoire being used, so that they understood the scale of our members’ repertoire and its use on the service. We asked them to take a licence to cover the use of all our members’ repertoire or otherwise stop infringing. SoundCloud decided to respond to our claim by informing us that it had removed 250 posts. Unfortunately, we have no visibility or clarity on SoundCloud’s approach to removing works, so it is not currently clear why these particular posts have been selected by them given the wider issue of infringement that is occurring. Ultimately, it is SoundCloud’s decision as to whether it starts paying for the ongoing use of our members’ music or stops using these works entirely. If the streaming market is to reach its true potential and offer a fair return for our members, organisations such as SoundCloud must pay for their use of our members’ music. We launched our Streamfair campaign in June to raise awareness of this issue and highlight how music creators need to be properly remunerated from streaming. We believe that all digital services should obtain a licence which grants them permission to use our members’ music and repertoire, in this case the works of songwriters, publishers and composers. The streaming market cannot fairly develop unless this happens. We have always been pro-licensing and pro-actively work with organisations in order to propose an appropriate licensing solution for the use of our members’ works. We remain hopeful that this matter can be resolved without the need for extended litigation. Members will appreciate that this is now a legal matter and our ability to communicate around it is therefore limited by the legal process. However, we will try to share information and updates whenever we can. Please visit our website to read our frequently asked questions. 23.
I'd say they weren't that musically educated, but there you go..probably the wrong argument
It's quite possible, sixty odd members of the Berlin Philharmonic would say the same about you, if you crash landed into one of their concerts and tried your hand at one of their Symphonies...lol...
 24. Personally I use VSL special editions 1 and 2, and the 1 and 2 plus. Loads of articulations, which are all very playable. The only problem for some folks is that the library is recorded dry. But the samples are pristine. The downside of this is you have to use you own verb tails and halls to position the instruments in their Orchestral seating positions. Although you can purchase extra verb, hall and studios of the world and the presets do the placements for you. But of course you can then mix and match with other vendor libraries very easily. The Instruments are both in full Symphonic set up as well as Chamber size. I also use Cinematic Strings, full Symphonic straight out of the box, very lush with all the Instruments in their positions. The articulations are limited to the basics, but beautiful, realistic sounding. The best Orchestral libraries out there with out a doubt are. The two above, the East West stuff, Project Sam, Spitfire Audio, Orchestral Tools, Cinesamples and L.A.S.S. They all come at a price, but most have cut down versions or you can buy sections one at a time. For Piano, I use Cinesamples 'Piano in Blue' V2. Nice sounding, with good velocity touch and playability. There are so many Piano libraries out there, it will always come down to your personal choice of sound in your head. I have my eyes on one of these Grand Pianos at the moment ( sale deals going on at the present). These samples always get good reviews, so worth checking out the demos. http://www.sampletekk.com/grand-pianos If you have not done so already, get yourself over to VI Control. Everything you need with lots of very helpful experienced composers. All the info you need on libraries, composing for Orchestra, tutorials and all the new deals (usually discounted) regarding software. Just about everything 'Midi Mock Up'. http://vi-control.net/portal/ One thing worth considering if you are undecided, is the monthly library rental that is in place over at 'East West'. http://www.soundsonl...om/?ref=subpage Of course, getting convincing, real sounding Orchestral results is not just about the sounds, it is as much about knowing what Instruments work with what (voicing wise etc), and all the articulations involved, and use them how a real player would, along with Reverbs, Halls and seating placements in the mix etc. Always a learning process, without a doubt. Good luck with the project.
