Hi ambient - Like you say, dynamics/vibrato needs some work. It seems to me to be lacking in expression regarding articulations etc. A lot of the notes seem the same on a velocity level, and everything bang on the grid. Midi writing for Orchestral/Quartet pieces is always (very) hard, you need to get into the PRV and write/paint in the cc#'s to breath life into a score. Note wise for me, it just seems to be harmony wandering with no strong theme. But hey, that's just what I like to hear, not meant to be a criticism, and it does have a lot of promise with a little work (and yes, it is a work in progress, I look forward to the end product) I have attached some info {PDF's) regarding articulations/dynamics and expression for Midi parts. You more than likely know all this stuff, but others may find it useful. Free SLM Loudness meter (Steinberg) Mac and PC. I presume it is only for Cubase users (it works on my Cubase 7.5) so go and grab. I will also try on another DAW later tonight and report back. Voted - Well done all, some interesting stuff going on.
Dad just did for me - It had that almost childish humour to it, and a slightly plodding feel that captured the Elephant, although the relentless snoring fx went on a bit

I use ipad when on the go (mainly Midi work) and GarageBand is fine but in my Studio I use Cubase, so I started using Cubasis on the ipad because I could Import Cubasis files straight into Cubase. I found that Cubasis has a lot more going for it than GarageBand, And has a lot more sounds that sound better for my use. Midi editing is much more in depth as well. Down side...It cost 35 notes. Check out the tutorial Videos on the right hand side.
I wonder who played bass on it?
Paul Westwood (he was a UK session player at the time) was on the album, so most likely him, But.......Kuma Harada also did a track or two, so possibly him - so to answer your question...I don't really know. And as you probably already know, it was Louis Johnson on the Quincy Jones version. A great well written tune, and both versions excellent in their own way.

The first "modern" sounding recording by today's standards?

I also remember Donald Fagen's 'The Nightfly' being used as a demo-disc in hi-fi shops, and it was also good for using as reference for studio monitoring systems. -
Here's an example of a Film Soundtrack that Carol Kaye played on....
The level of playing standard on all this stuff from that period of gems never stops amazing me. And not to mention the top, top arranging and writing is criminal. It was great how most of the players and writing/arranging teams on those sessions drew from all their Jazz background experience. Thanks for the video post, not stumbled on that one before.

Well played Bill. No matter what you transcribe (any Instrument), the end result will always be good for your (anyone's) ears, and a better understanding of harmony/theory etc. Others may think it a waste of time of course, otherwise it would not be Basschat. Garry

If you are looking for a really good notation package with good bundled sounds, it really is worth checking out Notion 4. Over 7 gigs of bundled sounds, and really easy to use. Great helpful forum and plenty of tutorial videos there as well. Score wise, the written articulations can bring the whole thing to life, you can also export as midi or wav/audio files (in fact a mini DAW) You can also rewire into your DAW. Full version £41.50 until 3rd December, there is a cut down version as well for £20.99 https://store.notionmusic.com/index.php?content=software Forum, http://forum.notionmusic.com/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=04fa12a15a550be6b93ec795409fd938 Tutorial videos, http://www.notionmusic.com/support/tutorials.html Garry
