1.
Scott Levine who has lots of free stuff
I bet he has - He used to help himself to databases.... A good tutor would be the way to go, it would be a good kick start (along with some of the links above of course)
 2. I agree JTUK... And it's the first time on Basschat that I have heard a musician call Mustang Sally music. Good luck with the search Gweb.
 3.
The original part for this is something else - Nathan East really is one of the best players I've ever heard and this is a fine piece of grooving, I don't think he plays anything the same way twice!
Agreed... He is listening very much to the vocal line as well, especially in the vocoder/robot voice breakdown (when the Bass comes in)
 4.
As for Quincy Jones -- that was more a pro jazz arranger writing in a contemporary style. Not too many bar bands were playing that stuff. And Earth Wind and Fire's "Got to Get You Into My Life" wasn't really disco.
But it was tagged as Disco, and being played in Clubs/Discos all over the world. Of course to musicians, music is just music, if they like it, they like it......... Or.... "It leaves them cold"....or "they don't get it"....
 5.
....and then there's the original version.
Yep great, track.. And yeh MB1.... an out there video... What I should have said was "Two of many covers"
 6.
Disco was about precise rhythm, repetition and simplicity.
Mostly true, but simplicity was not always order of the day. Arrangers ruled the roost as well as musicians and producers. (but I do get your point) Two of many........... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXmmWBzS-_o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJPWXq6b1fA
 7. I had a quick look, and put a timing/marker template together a couple of days ago, and from what I remember, some of the transitions are not so smooth. Thats where the art comes in, scoring over that transition so that it does look smooth. I suppose really, the aim would be to make six minutes of music flow in a legato style from start to finish (always hard). I like charic's approach, improvise, then tidy up the transitions afterwards. Hope I get some time next week to have a go at this.
 8. Very sad news indeed..... http://www.radiofact...orge-duke-dies/ Still one of my favourite GD tracks. And another. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gpRcPLnMoo Just so much material from him, also his contribution to other artists was immense. Great musician all round. R.I.P
 9.
I settled for a 'master' beat of 120, and went with the flow. It became very easy to 'line up' the transitions
Just been putting some markers in place for a template. And 120 Bpm seems pretty steady for me as well, although I will need a couple of 2/4 bars and a couple of 3/8 bars to link through the transitions. Some of the picture transitions are tight and link well, some splutter over a couple of beats. Oh well, I will look over it in anger next week sometime.
 10. I am with Bilbo with this one - I am not going to revisit the older tracks and go over old ground, If I get time to do this, I am going to start from scratch, It will be more of a challenge (for me) The problem is getting the older tracks out of my head.

 12.
Just noticed its a buy song.... Can't blame ya When hubby comes home and can help, you'll be having my 50p mate
You have PM. Garry
 13.
Well done, and against stiff competition, too. Maybe I should have (mis-...) spent a bit more of my distant youth in those great halls of [s]fire[/s] disco, it's a genre of which I know little. Never mind, onwards and upwards; on to the next challenge. Thumbs up for all entries, of course, especially that for which I voted..! (Potters off, mumbling... One day I'll have voted for the winner, one day..! I always knew my tastes were, comment dire, off-centre, but really... Disco, indeed..! These kids of today have lost their way, I fear. We are all doomed...)
Perhaps one month we could have a comp challenge related to a period of ones youth - Disco could be mine of course. I await your Viennese Waltz.
 14.
Well done Garry - about time you won it... good stuff mate
Thanks Mike. Well, that's my second win, and a first place tie..So I can hang up my DAW now (Along with Skol & You). Garry
 15. Thanks for all the nice comments folks, It was a good month and some great tracks up there. It was a bit of a tough call voting, but I got there in the end, someone really surprised me with something out of the blue. 70's was a great time for clubs and tripping over handbags (not mine) in search of one night of beer goggled fumbles.
 16.
'tweren't that funny anyway...
Too modest..
 17.
Rach had the temerity to die later than the featured composers, so it's probably a copyright thing.
Just been reading up on Rach, yep he died in the 40's,. Very, interesting read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergei_Rachmaninoff
 18.
Yup here's mary had a little lamb.. 64-62-60-62-64-64-64-62-62-62-64-67-67-64-62-60-62-64-64-64-62-62-64-62-60-
Few seconds, but I am there.............
 19. Thank's for that - I noticed there was no Rachmaninoff there ? Mind you, you would need hands like shovels (Left hand anyway) I also wish there was somewhere I could grab some Dave Grusin piano parts. Garry
 20.
Those settings map to the notches on the arm of a traditional mechanical metronome, so Korg are following that. My electronic metronome (also a Korg, I think) can flip between adjusting by these traditional steps or in increments of 1. As mentioned, unlike modern click tracks, those metronomes were never designed to be used in performance, and it was always implicit that a real-world performance of a piece marked as say MM=120 would be performed "somewhere in the region of" 120 bpm.
Spot on. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metronome Garry
 21.
+1
Hey Simon, just been looking at your web pages and noticed the 'Carlsbro Cobra 90' Me and my brother used one as a shared second amp for years. It had fallen off the back of trucks, soaked in beer in dodgy pubs, been thrown off airplanes, nicked and recovered by the Police, seen action in Abbey Road studios, borrowed by several other Bass players It had a life of it's own - And it was second hand when we got it, also with some previous history....It had never let anyone down. Apparently it was twenty years old when it died. Garry
 22.
Is there any software which can simulate completely fresh material to read?
Not sure if you have any notation programmes or not ? But if not, download Finale notepad (free) There are a couple of others as well (Google] http://www.finalemus...finale-notepad/ Then Google for free MIDI files (there are thousands out there) You can then import the MIDI file into Finale, and you would have as much new material as you want, in various keys, time signatures, styles etc. And of course you can change into any key and tempo, also mute the Bass track so you can play along to/with the rest of the Instruments. You can also tidy up the part with articulations/repeats/codas etc. Garry
 23.
or the tack in general
I suppose that's one way of looking at our music.... Only kidding....
 24.
Have mention these a few times on here and I know you lot don't give a sh*t about them, but Vulfpeck have a new single coming out v soon..... ....Enjoy haters
I like this band, it kinda of reminds me of 70's TV sound tracks (which I love) Just been listening to Vollmilch.
