Blimey that takes me back to my first year at Uni when everyone owned 'Nightbirds'
That 2nd keyboard player on the video, wearing the clowns jacket is Nigel Wright - producer and TV MD for Simon Cowell / Andrew Lloyd Webber etc. http://www.nigelwright.net/ http://en.wikipedia....ecord_producer) Garry

George A is a nice player, I remember when he took over from the original Bassist back in the 80's, The band suddenly took off, he got his foot in the door very quickly and he married Jill Saward one of the singers. [Although i think it ended in divorce] I think Jayedee made a sig Bass for him. Garry
What was really lovely, though, was the revelation in passing that Andy went to Leeds to study music in the early 1970s and was very close friends with a guy called Dick Hamer, the sax player who gave me my first jazz gigs in Cardiff in the late 1980s. They had lost touch and I can now connect them up. How cool is that?
Hey, I know Andy very well and worked together quite a bit over the years - nice player. Glad you enjoyed the gig. Garry

Can i throw a spanner in the works. Studio One V2 do a free version, and going by your OP will be right up your Strasse. And it really is the easiest DAW in the world to use.[ For someone starting from scratch] Everything is drag and drop and totally [Audio & Midi gapless] Plenty of tutorials on the Presonus site, and of course Youtube. http://studioone.presonus.com/free/ Garry

Try them both - then it's all down to work flow and personal preference and what works best for you. It's all 0's & 1's at the end of the day. From your OP and what you require it for, save your dosh and go with what you got [for the moment] But be rest assured and safe in the knowledge that at some point you will get DAW/Audio and midi interface/VST/VSTi's gas.
Or just think 'i Got Rhythm'
True But then again 'Think' is a big ask for Bass players. Plenty of Jazz chord charts/sequences here [PDF's] Click on the tune name and scroll down a bit. Various artists performing the tunes as well.
They won't help much. Charts like these are played 'in the style of' and not 'the same as the original'. If you play the bass lines off a notated chart, you may find the other musicians playing something that doesn't resemble the original and your lines won't work and may even clash horribly. You would be better off getting charts with the chords and then learning the basic rhythm patterns (swing, rhumba etc). I have played all of these tunes and rarely the same twice. The first too are easy ballad/torch songs, just stick with the root notes and follow the piano. Mack is a straight swing groove and Sway is a rhumba (think the first bar of a 3:2 clave) but will depend on what the drummer is doing. I don't recall what King oF the Road sounds like rhythm section-wise.
Just all of this really. King of the road in 2 going into 4's as the song progresses. Chord charts the way to go, and none of them choones are hard. Mack the Knife is just a relentless barrage of key changes. Enjoy the gig, it will be fun. Garry

Apart from all the benefits of insurance etc which have been mentioned above, they do a big job every year negotiating minimum contract fee increases for theatre/shows/TV [Including holiday pay] and Studio broadcast/recording rates. Teaching guideline rates, arranging and Orchestrating rates, and a few other things. So for many on this site the benefits of the MU don't seem much, but there are a few on Basschat that do benefit from the MU. Garry

Good stuff dude. About pacing yourself - good idea. But the real problem is soloing over so many chorus's, 4 1/2 minutes - it's to long. Makes it hard to keep the interest up, but no fear we are all guilty on that one... Garry
Some of my favourite players on there, too. I think the bulk of the album was recorded at Muscle Shoals and features the magnificent and much-underrated David Hood on bass, as well the rest of that formidable group of Southern session musicians . I remember hearing an interview with Rod on the radio where he was complaining that it was difficult to get a drink down there while he was recording there because Muscle Shoals Studio was in a "dry county" at that time with highly restricted liquor licensing laws. Surely they could have sent a roadie to find an off- licence? From the list of credits it looks as if some of the album must have been recorded in L.A., as well. It's certainly a stellar line up of musicians. I suppose this was all back in the heyday of big recording budgets . The deluxe version of this album that your son recommends is superb. I particulaly like the tracks with Booker T and the MGS. I think some people are put off by the fact that it's Rod Stewart, if you know what I mean, but good music is good music , and some of the stuff on this album has got real soul.
Been listening to it tonight, even Rod does a great job on it, he must have been inspired by that lot. And yes the version we have here has bonus tracks on it - good stuff all round. Garry

Now i had this album [Vinyl] years ago. But when i went all CD it never got a look In. Today my son turned up with a remastered CD of it saying that there is some great playing on it. Rod sure did keep some great Muso company on that album.
Back when I started out there was no Internet forums ( Jasus I feel old now ) the only way to meet other musicians was at clubs and gigs and hope somewhere you might get a spot to play. Open mic nights where great My first gig came from a friend of mine, his dad played in a wedding band and I sat in for the bass player, I was 14 and was pretty sh1t. But word got around and by 16 I was gigging by 19 I was touring and by 23 I was driving a new car and living in my first new house. If its what you want you will find a way or it will find you. A lot is luck a lot is on that list and a lot is hard work.
Good grief, pretty much me summed up [with Music collage thrown in] You don't just walk into [Recording] sessions from scratch. Over time you get to meet MD's/Fixers/Supervisors - All the people that really count. Getting on dep lists for shows is a great thing to do, that will lead to you getting calls for your own show, Dep that out for other gigs/functions/recordings/tours, a good way to get to know other full time working Musicians/Bassists. The term 'Session Musician' is now the sort of thing you would hear from some pissed bloke in the pub............. 'Are you one of those Sessioneers?'....Lol........... Freelance/Freelance Musician is more apt these days, a bit of everything is involved [playing wise] Good reading chops, good ears and the ability to learn things fast are a must. The days of doing three MU rate three hour [plus overtime] sessions a day are well gone [In the UK anyway] Good luck with it all - It's worth it in the end. Garry

Wey Hey - Great stuff ! Nicely articulated. Garry

Yep, very sad. Very solid player in Elton's band. Garry

Killer groove on this track - To be honest with all the ins and outs going on, its the sort of track that would be played slightly different each time. Its a great set of changes to player over, and its just Chuck R knowing his way around them like top player he is. Love the Piano intro chords, I also think its got a great hook to. A band I play with from time to time does this number, and i don't think I have never played the same thing twice. Do your own thing. Garry
