1.
Whilst we're on the subject of Michael Manring, marvel at this cover of Pat Metheny's 'Bright Size Life', surely the best version of the song I have ever heard.:
I do like this version, but i find it a bit messy compared to the original. MM plays great though. Garry
 2.
+1. Everytime.
Agreed. Garry
 3. This album is great. If you are a MM fan it won't let you down. Good playing all round from everyone, and yep, more organic. Garry
 4.
Just play as a session musician, the guitarist is a great song writer, I can't compare, just play what he wants me to play and go along for the ride?
Playing in a studio as a session musician or freelancer will not make things any different, or indeed easier. Ego & self doubt can't get in the way, as you will still be asked to play what is required from the producer or writer. And this will be as quick as possible, be it sight reading, or using your ears, or both. Artistic input from you would be minimal and some times not at all. You will need to get a feel/groove and peoples ideas down with minimal fuss. Getting in the way of other Instruments and vocals is a naughty no no. In the studio sloppy and untidy playing is easy exposed. [Not saying you are by the way] Knowing what these people want is half the battle - they seem to explain it in the most bizarre ways. And all what JTUK has just said. Garry
 5. Just been listening to this album again, i hear very little Jazz in this album. And as someone above has said - Neo Soul sounding. Sweet Voice. In many ways, she reminds me of Tania Maria. Garry
 6. Funny how things have moved on - Definitely our ear's for tuners, and the headstock to accommodate Benson & Hedges [Gold] If you rolled your own you were in trouble - unless it was of the Reggae variety. Garry
 7.
I consider myself well and truly told. I must learn to engage brain before opening mouth!
People just jesting i think - well on my part anyway. Garry
 8.
still love her version of Endangered Species though
Yep, very good. I believe Wayne Shorter thought it was great to. Garry
 9.
I have given her another go.
After calling her rubbish - I think it was just a sympathy shag on her part... Garry
 10. I thought Radio Song was great on the JH show. Great arranging & writing, and well played all round. She draws from her many backgrounds, Afro American, Hispanic etc.. Some Brazilian/Latin [ Ivan Lins ] influence in that tune, with the changes & Rhythms. She writes and plays how she hears all those different styles and influences. If it's not your thing, that's cool - but rubbish ? Garry
 11.
Entered Don't really understand why people are posting negatively It's a bloody facebook competition to win a free bass, if you don't want to add an app or participate then don't!
Agreed and entered on behalf of my son. People come on this forum begging for a like on their Facebook band page or such like, and for that you get a chance to win the grand prize of.................... Feck all Garry
 12. [Very] Experienced/ex pro/ good busker/quick learner/great reader/reliable/Funky/good Jazzer/backing vocals/good soloist etc.... But - 'Expert' to describe a Musician seems really odd - makes him/her sound like some sort of corporate team leader. Garry
 13.
True, and vice-versa. Hence the number of successful 'artists' with no discernible talent.
But they are doing something right - even if it's just getting Porked by Simon Cowell. Garry
 14. If you phone is always ringing, and you are getting booked on a regular basis, You must be doing something right. There is always a lot of 'experts' that talk good, but sh*te at delivering, and that's in any business not just Music. Garry
 15. Also it's good to transcribe other instruments other than just Bass, This is of course good for the pitching/ears, but also gaining a good/better understanding of [Theory] harmony , Rhythm and chord structure. Go with what you think you will gain more from. Garry
 16. I think it's a great idea and the tapping works for me - of course it all needs tidying up. Violin intonation has gone AWOL though. Good stuff. Garry
 17.
Pain to get sheets though.
Pain if you get the sh*tes as well. Garry
 18.
She was responsible for some great tracks during my teens/early 20s...here's just one example.. RIP Donna..
That was a great tune. Along with her 70's stuff, i just loved her duet with Barbra Streisand on Enough is Enough [No more tears] Fantastic arranging and Musicianship all round. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZUmzVTVbYY Garry
 19. Well yes, Just Bass & Conga's would leave you limited. Garry
 20.
I never liked the original tune and it's chord sequence anyway
Do you mean the Miles version ? If so , Donna Lee is based on the changes of Home again in Indiana, or back home in Indiana [or similar title] Miles just put his melody to it - the rest is Parker [Jaco] history. Garry
 21. Terrific stuff. Mr Thomas swinging like the clappers there. Nigel Hitchock must have been chomping at the bit for a solo... Great post Garry
 22.
I wish I could run away and join the circus! Good luck!
I was working with a Keyboard player who at that time had been working on 'Les Mis' for over ten years. When i asked him how it was going ? He said " I am a bit fed up with it now - I think i am going to run away and join a factory" Garry
 23. Terrific stuff from Carles, as usual. Nice articulated sound. Garry
