Protools GAS

A DAW is a DAW - work flow comes into play really when it comes to choice. These days all the more well known Vendors all pretty much do the same. Its then down to what they come with FX/Synth wise, or Video & Scoring wise, and Nuendo for post production etc. Audio cards are what the sound quality is all about for budget/project studios. Of course Pro Tools HD and the Radar systems are another matter. Been using Cubase for years and feel like trying something new [Just Gas more than likely] Pro-Tools 10 does look interesting, but i am holding back for the moment, Digital Performer 8 for W7 PC is out soon, and i have always liked the idea with that.[Mac only up till now] Great Midi & Video/Scoring side to it. Enjoy your Pro Tools, be interesting to see how you get on with it Charic.
5.
I've got an M-Audio FastTrack USB which came with ProTools Essentials. What I've found is there's no bass guitar volume worth speaking of unless you use an amp or preamp between the bass and the FastTrack. I since looked at reviews on Amazon and it's a common complaint. I've also used it with Audacity and it makes no difference. I'm now looking for a bass to PC soundcard interface that actually works.
What's your budget ? Garry
6. If its an old unit, you might need to update the drivers for your OS. http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support&tab=driver Garry
7. Great stuff dude. Always liked this tune [The Crusaders version was pretty cool as well] Garry
8.
I didn't expect this thread to run so long.
But you nearly had to run for cover....... Garry
9.
Actually I think he meant A flat. I was making some kind of attempt at humour - a complete waste of f***ing time in this thread by the looks of things.
I do know what he meant. I was making some kind of attempt at humour - a complete waste of f***ing time in this thread by the looks of things. For what its worth - i thought the Jewish agent from Archer St was funny. Garry
10. I think he meant form - abab, bridge, solos and out. Garry
11.
Its all good. The original and this. They are very different approaches to the song thats for sure. If there was a gun to my head and i had to choose over MM version and TOP i'd go TOP but hopefully that ain't gonna happen.
I agree........... But without the gun to my head. Garry
12. Well the OP was asking about good swing, playing the standards on EB. Monk M did just that, played with many top Jazzers on Electric in the late 50's and through the 60's. His 70's stuff was more Funk/fusion, which i was not that keen on. He was a solid Swing Bassist, no raking triplets and sixteen kicks every other bar - just straight down the middle. Some folk just swing regardless of it being Electric or Upright, Monk was one of them. Other's can stand in front of a fake book all day & everyday until the cows come home. Buckets of sh*te, a sea of Mars bars come to mind Garry
13. Monk Montgomery [Brother of Wes] All standards on a P Bass, then later on, he used a Jazz Bass. He had no problem Swinging. All [late] 50's 60's and 70's. Just google him, plenty of stuff about. Garry
14. Good one Johnny. Thanks for the link. Garry
15. Ronald [Ronnie] Baker. Garry

17. What was the guys name ? I also had two sixes made by Jeff, Fretted & Fretless. This was around 88/89 I was [am] very close friends with Jeff, although i have not spoken to him since last year. He lives over at Clacton, but does very little Luthier work these days. Garry
18. Greta stuff ! Thanks for that, it's a stonking tune and a fantastic play all round. Garry
19.
A long time ago (early - mid 70s), but something that I took part in: Windsor free festival - the last one (1974), was abruptly brought to a halt by hundreds of rozzers, truncheons in hand. Thankfully, my band (Stallion) played the day before the invasion. Here's a clip, a mix of the Windsor festival (when I was in the band) and Reading festival (when I wasn't)
Great stuff... Garry
20. Also look at why the BBC bans certain tunes [or did do] A few eg's here, and pretty laughable really. http://www.streetdirectory.com/travel_guide/19031/music/title_bbc_banned_music_top_singles_banned_by_the_bbc.html The BBC are also quick to point out they did not ban 'God Save The Queen', but they did ban the re worded 'God Save The Queen' By 'The Sex Pistols' Also the disc cover had a picture of the Queen punking it up with a safety pin in her nose... But what ever she gets up to in her Castle is her business really. Garry
21. Have they not Emailed ALL their customers to let them know of the delay ? That would be the first thing you do to paying customers. Garry
22. Interesting stuff on the site. Thanks for the link. Garry
23.
IME clicks and the like seriously restrict your ability to actually play music.
Not your finest Jazz solo Steve.... Garry
24. You can actually audition midi files for your chosen Drum sampler [or any Synth] within your DAW browser, Most DAW's do this. However like Urb said, EZdrummer pro will allow you to break down component parts. But saying that, once again most DAW's will do this anyway. Usually the command would be 'Dissolve Midi track' and that will split into the various component part. Garry
25.
Tracks don't move, people do. I don't really agree that drummer only is the best way, I've played lots of gigs and sessions to click and find that leaving the responsibility to one person means that if he goes the entire band has no chance of sticking with... if you are lucky and have a drummer that can stay with, fine, if not, if he struggles you will all struggle, at least if the whole band has a click then you can be helpful if things drift. Losing the sequence sounds dire so it really is important that all the members are on the ball. I have done gigs with symphony orchestras where the rhythm section, the conductor and the leader has the click all fine.. one reason... top players! make the choices based upon the individual capacity of the group, test it in a stage setting, if it works fine you're away
All this. If a few of the Musicians are using the click, it will still sound human. You are not midi file players just playing to a quantised grid line, Natural human movement & feel will see to that. Garry
