I know him very well, he now lives in LA. He has a production team called The Matrix, who have written and produced for Avril Lavigne and Korn...amongst others.
A couple of Musicians i know relocated to LA, and mentioned he was there or had been there. I did not realise he was involved in that though. Great stuff and good to hear. I see you are in Aberdeen - do you know a Keyboard player called Irvin Duguid ? Garry
If the live version of Ball of confusion is off Bands and Crashes, it's Graham Edwards that's playing bass.
Sure is, and a very fine Bassist he is. Garry
Rick Laird was a great straight ahead jazz player on upright before he joined Mahavishnu Orchestra.
He was.... A young RL back in the 60's with Victor Feldman. Great how he listens to everything going on around him. Nice solo also.
Scritti Politti
Great band, even had Mr Miller & Miles Davies [Oh Patti] playing on a couple of tracks. Really nice tunes. A Bassist called Graham Edwards also did his bit with Go West live . Garry

Another two who rarely get a mention, Victor Bailey & Neil Stubenhaus. Both done plenty, Particularly Neil Stubenhaus who's credit list is very impressive. Edit - Tim landers as well. Garry
Garry, hope you didn't get the wrong end of the stick by my referencing you wasn't in a negative way! I personally can't recall seeing too much about him on here up until now so well worth getting a thread going
No Mate - not a problem. I did not word it very well.... And i am glad you got the post going, people have been posting some good read ups above. Garry
Following the Forgotten Bass Players thread and Lowdown's comment,
And i did say " Is he really forgotten" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0XAI-PFQcA Garry
Cogbill has been discussed here. I think plenty of us have heard of him and more.
I know he has been discussed here, and plenty have heard of him and more. Hence, my original post was, had he really been forgotten ? just curious really. Garry
The OP was refering to the amount of discussion bass players receive on BC and as such Tommy Cogbill gets very little. I wouldn't have thought he would have made many Bass Player Top 20's either side of the Atlantic though I'd be delighted to be proved wrong!
Ah...... Could be they have not heard of him, and I suppose if they ain't heard of him - they can't really forget him then..... Garry

http://www.musicsupervisor.com/ http://www.filmmusic.net...... daily email alerts on pitches and available placements http://www.humtoo.com/marketplace.asp I have had a commercial over in the states, and cues used for documentaries and trailor's from the above. Its worth checking out some of the better Library and production companies around. I had a track picked up for a European TV promo for 'Supernatural' not so long back. Some of the Lib & Production companies are big business these days. Garry

Are the likes of Eddie Gomez, Tommy Cogbill and Roscoe Beck really forgotten? I suppose maybe in the UK. Garry
You're right there Garry, I know he's a bit of a jazzer & he does a bit of work with Capercaille (sp?). Has any mag ever done a decent interview with him?
Louis, I think somewhere back there was an interview with him in one of the Bass mags. Jazz, rock, funk, the whole lot. He is such a rounded player. A few years back he picked up the Double bass in a couple of weeks, and was up & gigging.... One player that slipped under the radar. Garry
As far as I know, there is only Jamiroquai and Beyonce that take a large band on tour to recreate that sound. I may be wrong, though. Correct me? EWF are without doubt the greatest ever.
Don't forget Tower Of Power,,,,,, Garry
She is OK but does not belong in the same thread as Amy Winehouse. IMO obviously.
You have turned up at the wrong gig mate...... Garry

"Ron Carter meets Bach" Though i think Bach might have regretted meeting Ron Carter after hearing it. Not one of RC's finest - and i like Ron Carter. Garry
My mind was totally blown the first time I saw that, Anthony Jackson didn't drop a note.
Yep, fantastic skill for sure from AJ - I am also knocked out with the whole arrangement on that tune...superb all round. Garry

Great steady playing all round, great writing, great harmony arranging, [The above SD Vids ] Charts or no charts won't really take away from that, or make a jot of difference with the quality of those guys. [Michel Camilo - New York Band, with charts "Not Yet" comes to mind] If visuals are your thing along with the Music, SD are never going to do it, and never have. I went to a Berliner Philharmoniker concert a few months back - never crossed my mind that they were using charts, Or indeed if it was losing energy because of the charts. Just been listening to 'AJA' again - Wey Hey, Top stuff. Of course, each to their own. Garry

Question on reading - in a big band setting
lowdown replied to philwood's topic in Theory and Technique
100 BPM is not that fast, so 123{4} through the pick up bar would be the norm and you in at the second bar. After playing the chart a few times, its quite possible the MD/conductor would just give a down beat on 3 to who ever Is playing that pick up line. Garry
