1.
Just seen this fairly recent solo. He's been a bit of a Marmite player for me over the years but this plain blew my socks off. Looks like his move to LA will pay off- great interaction between kit and bass and a truly frightening array of chops. The best I've seen in this style for a long time. Jaco on acid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fX92BSNiYw...player_embedded
I like it, and think they seem to be having a load of fun. However...... There will be people on this forum who will want you removed from Basschat for posting that link, accuse you of having a tash, bad clothes, Demand you hand all your Basses over to the Police, and your family taken into care. You have to ask yourself is it worth the risk? or do you feel lucky? Garry
 2.
Recently I’ve been listening to loads Olivier Messiaen's music. He’s an incredible composer, who I believe was heavily influenced by the music of Debussy.
He was also a composer well into his Rhythms. He liked to take the Rhythms certain birds made when tweeting away, and incorporate them into a piece. Interesting character and i think he was a tutor to Stockhausen somewhere. Garry
 3. The originator of the 'Cliche' but with heart & soul. Garry
 4.
So we're back to discussing Jeff Berlin?
That would be a 44 DD cup then? [going by some opinions] Garry
 5.
As a 'cellist myself I appreciate the Thomas Beecham quote! I also remember playing for Vilem Tausky - conductor of the Carl Rosa Opera, many years ago when he leaned over to the Cello section and told us that we were "grovelling like 'verms'". LC
Ah, Mr Beecham, Master of acid tongue and devastating wit. Not to mention his sideshow, Ace at carving. Garry
 6.
five minutes my life was greatly enriched.
Good point about the five minutes Its hard enough to watch a Band posting for five minutes let alone a Soloist piece. Kevin manages that. Garry
 7.

Wey Hey - great stuff ! Love the dynamics and light & shade. Garry
 8.
I'm beginning to think that's weird though.
Not as weird as you think. Alf Clusen of 'The Simpsons' score fame has something to say about it. Alf Clausen & Sibelius Garry
 9.
maybe a software solution to mock something up?
Mock ups with a DAW are a great way of doing it if you struggle or are a newbie with chordal instruments. Using the Piano roll view or notation view you can start constructing chord sequences with the mouse and edit all the articutaions etc. Or record basic parts a couple of Bars at a time, the building block way, plus pull in a drum/Percussion loop for a guide until you have something more concrete. I tend to use Keyboard and a DAW, and add Gtr and Bass later on. Most music for films is done using mock ups that a director can hear and get an idea of whats going on all the way through the writing and filming process, Then it will go off to the scoring stage. So if a mock up is good enough for Hollywood, i am sure it will be more than enough info for your band... Garry
 10.
Thats called having a different opinion and if people dont want other opinion (and im sure they do) they really shouldn't post on a public web forum.
Yep. Garry
 11.
Define "better".
I suppose that depends on what side of the fence you are on, it's not how you define 'better', It's who defines 'better' that really matters. In the case of Nathan East, over forty years of hirers & firers have defined him as 'better'. Of course if you are only in it for fun, it matters not. But if you are in it for fun & money, it does. Garry
 12.
It's no more difficult, unless you are used to twatting the E string like most slap players.
They get around that by tuning E-C. Then the 'E' string twatting is not affected. Garry
 13.
This much more fun last time we did it Tal Wilkenfeld
A few funny people have flown the nest since then... Garry
 14.
Successful players successfully network to get a gig, but do you really think the likes of Herbie Hancock, Chic Corea and Jeff beck are going to choose their musicians based on their living arrangements? Get real!!
+1 Any working full time Musician will make a career out of Music because they have put in plenty of business effort. PR/promotion/practising/networking/getting to know fixers/agents/MD's and all the other sh*te that goes with running a business. You make you own luck as they say, and Tai Wilkenfeld has done this. Garry
 15.
I can't help wondering why players like this didn't just buy a guitar in the first place.
Well she might not like the thought of taking it up the Octave. To be honest that is not the best clip to post of her - she has better stuff out there. I find her playing Ok, but certainly all been done before. Garry
 16.
You know drummers .
Garry
 17.
That looks great Garry, I shall be getting my teeth into that!
Well You are going to need plenty of sets of false teeth then Jake, Bucket loads of stuff on that site. Garry
 18.
I couldnt do a gig the other week for a mate so he got somebody else. He text me the next day to say "fuucking cheers for last night got a guy who plays in an orchestra pit , we knew we were in trouble when he pulled out sheet music to "sweet home alabama"
If he booked the guy - why was he moaning at you? Garry
 19. Great site here for plenty of Classical Orchestrations. Full scores / Individual instruments [+ lots of Double Bass charts] Accompanying MP3's / PDF's / some Sibelius & Finale parts / Music XML files / Post script files. Its all here - go get... Orchestral Goodies Garry
 20. Lots of Videos on Youtube for doing this, worth checking out. Garry
 21. Another Lefty playing Righty here. I had Piano lessons when i was very young, so got used to using both hands equally, plus my Dad's Right hand Jazz Bass Was always hanging around, i just picked that up and played righty. Interesting though, my Seven year old son is left handed and picks up my Bass and plays it upside down left way round. I find it impossible to do that. Garry
 22.
I've just had a thought, I have a soft copy, is there an auto-scroll program that I can set to the BPM?
Very Dangerous. If you lose your place, you will not have a clue where you are. Its all just passing you by. The charts would needed to be written through, no signs/DS's/Coda's etc. Unless you are using programmes like Finale & Sibelius. Sure people do it, having the midi file playing along in your DAW that has a notation page/Window [Cubase/Sonar/Logic/Digital Performer etc] A Sibelius or Finale programme will scroll, but its really hard to follow in real time in the heat of Battle. If the MD needs to jump a few bars because of a fcuk up on the boards, or there is a round & round till cue section - where does that leave you? Plus you will have to stop and start the scrolling between numbers unless its Synced up to an external sequencer or click track. Still the best and safest way in live/gig/show situations at the moment is the Analogue way - Music stand extension and page turning. Garry
 23.
then check out the credits and see who arranged those horns!
Yep, and always overlooked in favour of 'I don't get him' Some of his Big Band arranging was superb. And as much as i liked a lot of JB's early stuff [his own & as a sideman] he never got out of his comfort zone and attempted anything on that level. [Arranging] Garry
 24.
Indeed and why not Garry
Of course Pete, and i have just had a visit over to the MM serial number site, just to carry on with my own nonsense.. Just staring at serial numbers - lovely. Garry
 25. I have a 78 Ray, and that does sound like a Ray..... Which ever clip is supposed to sound like the Ray, it still sounds like a fraud. Another one here for 'get rid of the Amp modeling' A Stingray always sounds at its nastiest and best when just DI. What a great thread for nonsense all round. Carry on chaps. Garry
