1.
I think I might cope with the Windows, as I doubt I'm cool enough for a Mac. Thanks for all the recommendations!!! Assuming you chaps with the recommendations are regular users - any tips for building reasonable drum tracks?
I presume you will be Midi programming drums & percussion, so you will need to humanize the parts, IE - not everything on the grid or you will end up with the machine gun effect. The other thing is velocity levels [on various hits] it will give you various accents like a human would play. Layering up various drums, like two or three various kick sounds etc. Adding various elements every two or four bars etc variation & dynamics on verse/chorus etc. Youtube will be your best friend, loads of videos on tips & tricks. And don't over use the word various like i have. Garry
 2.
It's cool, I liked it when i first heard them but sounds a bit dated to me now. Now trying to think of similar stuff! Look up Oz Noy, Galactic, Lettuce. Bit more modern and upfront. Plenty of LArry Carlton stuff out there if you like that kind of stuff. Actually found out about them via some promo cd which had a really great Jimmy Haslip track on it!
I kinda of agree - but then again the others you have mentioned still sounds dated to me, all been heard before, i suppose thats the problem facing folks today. One major thing i have/did always like about the Yellow Jackets was the Chordal structures approach rather than riff based frenzies knocking around at that time. Garry
 3.
I listened to it through the speakers on my computer and bass line is barely audible, yet it didn't diminish my appreciation of a very well written and performed song. Probably the only people who will consciously listen to the bass part are bass players. Most other listeners are drawn to other parts.
Funny you should say that. I am a massive Marcus fan, Huge Luther fan. But the thing that always sticks out on that track to me, is the great Funky Guitar lines. Great track all round. Garry
 4. Another plug for RME here. I use the Hammerfall DSP 9632 with an expansion board. Apart from the great performance at very low latency, a big bump for the Midi drivers. Tight and very very stable. Well worth the extra dosh. All the 64 bit drivers have been updated of late as well. Garry
 5. I spent about an hour with JH chatting in a Jazz club in Berlin in 2007, he is such a cool fellow. Been a Yellow Jackets fan since that very first album. Great stuff. Garry
 6.
Hey did you see Joey Jordison on bass! Hers actually pretty awesome!
Any chance you can let us know where 'One' is mate ? You seem to have lost most of the Ensemble. Garry
 7.
Aww, thanks. Glad to have you back by the way. I really missed you.
Good grief, a Basschat wedding on the way. You won't be short of a band or two then. Garry
 8.
I reckon you'd need to drink an astonishing amount to want to **** a bear!
I am sure it has been done Rich, or at least attempted.... So maybe i was right first time. Garry
 9.

Fantastic, i have justed noticed what i said.... very good. Although my conjured up image of what he looked like in Beer goggles behind the bus shelter, was more obscene and not cuddly bear like at all. Garry
 10.
Mmm, I don't see why a bassist should do as she suggests, ie. don't get involved with the dynamics. The more musical and empathic your palette, the more musical you will be. I actually think she's talking a bit of bullshit. You should do what you think is right for the song and work it until it sounds good and wholesome. Nothing wrong with a broad set of musical principles that you you identify with, but what works for the Pixies wouldn't work necessarily elsewhere.
Yep, i agree. Garry
 11.
the only slappers that interesr me are those i pick up in the pubs on a saturday night
Monday afternoon, and reading that looks like you have still got your bear goggles on from Saturday night.. Garry
 12.
We all know that I'm a huge Marcus fan,but I've got to say that that video,to me,shows that Marcus is just so far ahead of all those gospel chops guys. The groove, the tone...everything.
Agreed [Again - sorry not following you around] I will add his composition skills to that. Just been listening to Blast, great use of Ethnic flavouring in the tune with great phrasing. Garry
 13.
Probably not. Of course it varies from deal to deal, but most "library" music is produced for a fixed fee in advance with all rights being transferred to the publisher.
Use to be like that, not so anymore. It really does depend on the library company - plenty of duff ones about, but also plenty of good ones giving you a good deal So depending on the company, yep for sure you can have a good laugh at being labeled 'lift music' Garry
 14.
That's great. It's from the 'Master of All Trades' DVD.
Yep, tis a very good DVD as well. Good stuff. Garry
 15.
i do hate pigeon holeing of music though.. lift music, Ceefax music. job finder..???. i bet whats gone into it is far and beyond what most of us are capable of
+1 That often makes me laugh.... Lift music, Ceefax music, job finder....Underscore for DIY/cooking shows etc The composers/writers have a good laugh as well when they are collecting perfomance royalties, back end royalties.. play list income[PRS Youtube deal as well] and just about everything else money wise that goes with it... More than likely that clip is not every ones cup of tea, but his playing is tight and on the money for sure, Garry
 16. I downloaded this from Amazon just before Xmas, and its great. As well as the Groove, i love the tight intimate sound /vibe of the track. Good stuff. Garry
 17.
I've re-upped a slightly different mix. Over a dozen plays on the old mix and no comments. Is it that bad?
I am not sure its bad - but i think its a few minutes of nothing happening. The vox sample at the end, why dont you try chopping it up and making it yours? Bring it in earlier, be a bit creative. There is so much you can do to make things interesting, a DAW is open for just about anthing you want. Not a knock by the way, just an observation. Garry
 18.
That's pretty much the sort of thing I was wanting to know. If we printed a CD ourselves and sold it at gigs and online but only a couple of band members write the songs, what would be the usual split of payments (stated as a percentage of the profit, ignoring the record company take etc). Obviously the song-writers would take more, but what would be normal for performers to receive? (And I'm aware that this is agreed by the band, but it's helpful to have an idea of convention before we get into the wrangling side of things).
This is aside from what ever deal you strike up with your band mates and the writers. You still need to look at post #2. PPL If you have not written/co writtten the tunes - PRS-MCPS performance royalties/Mechanicals will not apply to you. However you mentioned your band CD's being used for Air play/Broadcast/Adverts, well in that case PPL will be very useful to you as a performer/sideman. For some reason a lot of Musicians can't be arsed with PPL, but it could be a possible source of future income for you. Garry
 19.
Just wondering how the money from royalties etc is generally divied up (ignore any cut from the record label etc, this is just on money that comes back to the band). Whether that money comes from sales of CDs, radio plays, or even if the song is used on an advert for Nike trainers. What happens to that? I know that Jagger, Richards, Lennon and McCartney etc are vastly richer than Starr and Watts because they wrote the songs, but they still got / get money from every record sold don't they? Just wondering how this is usually resolved.
Both of these - read up, and if applies to you - Join. They both do a fantastic job. PPL are really getting there act together - PRS, it goes without saying. PRS PPL Garry
 20.
Another tip is that when you're happy with the sound of a particular track, render it down to a "static" audio file. For amp simulations, this will save a lot of CPU power as it just needs to play the audio without the additional processing load of the plugin. It's worth keeping the original track and a note of the plugin settings in case you decide to go back and recreate something. You can usually save the plugin settings and reload them later.
Yep that as well - or just archive the original track, that way the plug and info is still all there and then there will be zero hit on the cpu[s] Un archive if you want to change things. Garry
 21. After you have finished tracking/recording etc you can knock the latency up as well..... I should imagine Reaper is ok/good at Plug in delay compensation. Of course with quality Quad/Dual cores [CPU's] it shouldn't be an issue these days. Garry
 22.
The bass highlight for me was Bakithi Kumalo
I enjoyed that to. Nice and controlled. Garry
 23. Depends on what your idea of 'Pro' means as well. If you are not in a major band, you would be talking about being a bread butter Musician and sustaining it. IE - Shows, sessions, tours backing acts, regular depping, freelancing, etc.... Apart from chops you would need ears, reading skills, business skills, discipline, be adaptable, amongst other stuff, and be quick at learnig and picking up stuff. The guys you see on them vids might have been rehearsing the stuff for weeks. [not all of course] and might be a one trick pony so limits their shelf life. Garry
 24.
So i was thinking whats stopping these guys becoming pro's?
TAB Garry
