A youtube clip with some very nice slapping!
lowdown replied to Gwilym's topic in General Discussion
i do hate pigeon holeing of music though.. lift music, Ceefax music. job finder..???. i bet whats gone into it is far and beyond what most of us are capable of
+1 That often makes me laugh.... Lift music, Ceefax music, job finder....Underscore for DIY/cooking shows etc The composers/writers have a good laugh as well when they are collecting perfomance royalties, back end royalties.. play list income[PRS Youtube deal as well] and just about everything else money wise that goes with it... More than likely that clip is not every ones cup of tea, but his playing is tight and on the money for sure, Garry -
I downloaded this from Amazon just before Xmas, and its great. As well as the Groove, i love the tight intimate sound /vibe of the track. Good stuff. Garry
I've re-upped a slightly different mix. Over a dozen plays on the old mix and no comments. Is it that bad?
I am not sure its bad - but i think its a few minutes of nothing happening. The vox sample at the end, why dont you try chopping it up and making it yours? Bring it in earlier, be a bit creative. There is so much you can do to make things interesting, a DAW is open for just about anthing you want. Not a knock by the way, just an observation. Garry

Band payments for songwriting, cd sales, radio play, tv adverts etc
lowdown replied to lanark's topic in General Discussion
That's pretty much the sort of thing I was wanting to know. If we printed a CD ourselves and sold it at gigs and online but only a couple of band members write the songs, what would be the usual split of payments (stated as a percentage of the profit, ignoring the record company take etc). Obviously the song-writers would take more, but what would be normal for performers to receive? (And I'm aware that this is agreed by the band, but it's helpful to have an idea of convention before we get into the wrangling side of things).
This is aside from what ever deal you strike up with your band mates and the writers. You still need to look at post #2. PPL If you have not written/co writtten the tunes - PRS-MCPS performance royalties/Mechanicals will not apply to you. However you mentioned your band CD's being used for Air play/Broadcast/Adverts, well in that case PPL will be very useful to you as a performer/sideman. For some reason a lot of Musicians can't be arsed with PPL, but it could be a possible source of future income for you. Garry -
Thanks Pete. Garry

Band payments for songwriting, cd sales, radio play, tv adverts etc
lowdown replied to lanark's topic in General Discussion
Just wondering how the money from royalties etc is generally divied up (ignore any cut from the record label etc, this is just on money that comes back to the band). Whether that money comes from sales of CDs, radio plays, or even if the song is used on an advert for Nike trainers. What happens to that? I know that Jagger, Richards, Lennon and McCartney etc are vastly richer than Starr and Watts because they wrote the songs, but they still got / get money from every record sold don't they? Just wondering how this is usually resolved.
Both of these - read up, and if applies to you - Join. They both do a fantastic job. PPL are really getting there act together - PRS, it goes without saying. PRS PPL Garry -
Another tip is that when you're happy with the sound of a particular track, render it down to a "static" audio file. For amp simulations, this will save a lot of CPU power as it just needs to play the audio without the additional processing load of the plugin. It's worth keeping the original track and a note of the plugin settings in case you decide to go back and recreate something. You can usually save the plugin settings and reload them later.
Yep that as well - or just archive the original track, that way the plug and info is still all there and then there will be zero hit on the cpu[s] Un archive if you want to change things. Garry

After you have finished tracking/recording etc you can knock the latency up as well..... I should imagine Reaper is ok/good at Plug in delay compensation. Of course with quality Quad/Dual cores [CPU's] it shouldn't be an issue these days. Garry

Best Glasto bass parts weren't the big bands.

Depends on what your idea of 'Pro' means as well. If you are not in a major band, you would be talking about being a bread butter Musician and sustaining it. IE - Shows, sessions, tours backing acts, regular depping, freelancing, etc.... Apart from chops you would need ears, reading skills, business skills, discipline, be adaptable, amongst other stuff, and be quick at learnig and picking up stuff. The guys you see on them vids might have been rehearsing the stuff for weeks. [not all of course] and might be a one trick pony so limits their shelf life. Garry

He played this at Ronnies during the week, and it was fecking amazing. However knowing this tune inside out, this version does not sound like Dave Grusin, [only one i could find] Who ever played it did a great job on a fantastic piece of music. Garry

Jeff Lorber at Ronnies on July 6th, with Jimmy Haslip on Bass and Poogie Bell on Kit, Bob Franceschini on Sax duty. Great sampler [recent stuff] video here with some cool playing from Jimmy Haslip, although slightly different band from Ronnies. During the week went to Ronnies to see Dave Grusin & Lee Ritenour, with Melvin Davies on Bass. Fantastic Gig and outstanding Musicianship. Garry

Kenny Passarelli first to use fretless bass?
lowdown replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
Bassists in the States were using Fretless Bass Gtrs in the mid 60's [Ampeg Bass] Not that popular over here. 1968 model Ampeg Bass Garry -

Chordal improvisation of Autumn Leaves - Scott Devine
lowdown replied to devinebass's topic in Recording
Cool stuff Scott - Lyrical and meaningful..... Garry -
Thing is, I've no need to write the notes at all. What i need to do is write the chord symbols in the bars rather than on top.
Go to youtube, i think there might be some vids on Finale, could be of use to you. [Depending on what version you have] You might be right about Finale being a bit flaky for your needs [on the older versions] But on Finale 2010 & 2011 no such problems. In Finale you can place Chords & Lyrics where ever you please. [As with Sibelius as well] Garry
You're wrong, of course. This kind of total travesty has never happened to me. Why? because every time I sit on the end of my bed and pick up my bass, I check my tuning. It's easy enough, red means out, green means in. I mean, she's a professional, she should know this. Red = out, green = in. Anyone who doesn't know this should be shot in the face before they get anywhere near a stage. When I saw this total travesty I immediately voided my bowels in disapproval. I mean, she's a professional. Her fee could have paid for a new hospital. Or at least a paediatric unit. Basically she's just pissing in the face of dying children. I hope she comes on here and sees this and goes away and cuts her hands off so we never have to listen to this sort of total travesty again. Unbelievable. I mean, if she couldn't see the board for the sunshine, she should have signalled to the parasol roadie to get his arse over her side PDf***ingQ. I mean, she's a professional, ffs. It's a total travesty. Green = out, red = in. So simple, even a woman could understand it. God, I love Jaco.
Lol..... Out there dude... Garry
All this sh*t can happen to all of us at some point.
Of course it can, and does. I should think it is how quick you get your self out of the situation, Some do it very quickly, others take... well, for ever. To me the whole thing/band/performance sounds horrible from start to the train wreck at the end. Garry
