Bass solos are dull
I usually find its the Bassist soloing that is dull, not the actual solo aspect of it. Bassists by nature seem to be un melodic, and are not lyrical in their approach. [Not all of course] They tend to play everything in scale form , going up and down as fast as they can because it possibly falls under the fingers. Using larger intervals seems to pass them by, of course this might be because cross string playing can be harder to achieve in a fluent way on the Bass. A bass player winging a solo [mainly because they don't know what they are doing, or why they are doing it] is no different to bad guitar solos, Bad horn solos - or even worse the likes of Nigel Kennedy straying from their classical environment and having a go at improvising. So its possibly not the type/what Instrument - but the player who spews out a bad solo. Some people just seem to be more melodic than others when pulling off a solo [any instrument] Not to say you can not learn to be melodic - and a lot of players do learn over time. Garry
Is the dude at 0:59 just noodling around practising for the next song then?
On that Promo video - it looks like 'the Dude' Nathan Watts is playing 'Superstition' However on the studio version 'The Dude in question' ain't playing nowt. Another Dude [In this case Stevie Wonder] is playing - Keyboard Bass, who apart from writing and singing great songs, Had a nose for a melodic nifty left hand Bass line... Sorry, i thought everyone had a good idea of that. No offence intended of course. Garry
Cheers man The tempo is slightly slower because my wrists have been giving me hell the past few days and any faster would've killed me. Just looked at Kontact, blooming expensive but knowing them it's worth it.
Tom - sounds good. I use Kontakt 4.2, its the way to go. Huge amount of libraries out there that sound pretty much spot on. As far as Pop/Jazz horns go, there are four really worth a look. Not just for the sounds but also for the articulations [thats what makes them come alive and more realistic/usable] Word of warning - it gets expensive...so if its just for re doing the Chicken, I would stick with General MIdi sounds Check out the Demo sounds Garritan Jazz & Big Band [come with own sample/patch player] http://www.garritan.com/index.php?option=c...4&Itemid=56 Mojo Horns http://www.vir2.com/instruments/mojo-horn-section Chris hein horns http://www.chrishein.net/CHH%20V1.5/chhv1_productsite.htm A oldie but still going strong - [you would need to convert in Kontakt format - but Kontakt 4 does this from within] http://avaxhome.ws/software/software_type/...brass_akai.html Garry
I have nothing against Jazz per se but I am sick to the back teeth of the many members of the jazz fraternity who are dismissive, even contemptuous, of rock and pop music in general and its musicians in particular. Aware that I am going to be accused of gross generalisation it is still my experience that jazzers....... A. Want to be elitist but are resentful if not jealous of the popular acclaim enjoyed by rock/pop musicians and .... B. Are more concerned with impressing each other than with entertaining an audience. Yes there is nothing wrong with music being interesting or challenging or complex or unorthodox but that does not make it better and certainly not more sophisticated than a piece of music that has a simple but pleasing melody and/or an infectious , danceable beat. Some time back I was having the rock/pop Vs Jazz debate with two good friends of mine, a married couple . Both were jazzers; he a upright bass player who came from a pop/rock background and she a Pianist who came from a classical background. I was arguing that jazz often distorted the basic principles of rhythm, melody and harmony beyond recognition. She replied....'there are some wonderful harmonies in jazz music. You just have to be a jazz musician to understand and appreciate them' case proven M'lud
Dedicated to you Pete. Must admit my iPod is full of Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band at the moment - some stonking playing. Garry
still retain that silly I V feel.
Nothing silly about a I V feel. The basis of this Bassline is IV [Its all in the way its played - Rhythm can, and does play a part] Ok there is scale related as well as other lines in there also, as the song devolopes, but in essence IV over the chord. Thousands of examples out there suggesting IV is not silly, and in fact a musical exercise in discipline and taste. Garry
Hey folks - just saw this on the TC Electronics site and it made my cold cynical heart inch up a degree or two. I hadn't heard of Simon Vignola before, so I'm probably coming late to the party. I'm digging the chops making a nice tune, not just nice chops. Enjoy:
Great stuff - Promo Vid looks cool as well. Garry -

Going straight into another band might be a good idea - then again it might not. The next band you go into, might have you feeling paranoid after what has been said to you. Get a teacher, have a few lessons, let him point you into some kind of direction, and get you enthusiatic again, and dare i say it, structure it all out a bit. This will all help with getting the confidence levels up again, and some discipline into your playing. Some theory under your belt will never go a miss, whatever anyone says. Upward and onward my friend, and good luck with it all. Garry

Bass player wanted for Florida tour-MAY 11th-24th 2011
The tour is the 'COMING HOME' tour
Is this 'The coming Home Tour' for that old Rock & Roll Trio...... 'Broke, Novak 'n' Good...? Garry -
Exactly.....I was referring to the others that said it's normally in E minor
Well its done in either key [Gm or Em] Depends on who' taking the head i suppose. I have played it equally in both keys over the years. I think the Em/G came about from the early Fake book days, when i think it was based around a Bill Evans recording of the time that was floating around. Of course singers/turns tend to do it in just about every key going. Busking changes wise, its an easier tune [or should be] because it goes nicely around the chord cycle and nothing to trip you up. For anyone interested, i picked these Transcriptions up a couple of years ago. One is a Neils Pederson Version, the other Ron Carter. On another note was Ipanema not written in some other key - like Db? Goes to show the importance of playing/practicing in all keys - It toughens up the ears, Garry
It's a rule of thumb that can lead to many a car crash too, sadly. "Autumn Leaves, key of B minor..."
Quite.... Autumn Leaves is usually [Fake Book - and possibly written key].....E minor [G major/ 1#] Garry
Just lately I have been getting a few tunes from sheet music (proper notation!) but rarely have I seen anything with a key signiture....unless I'm looking in the wrong place? example: I worked out that this must be F major...I say must be, it has a Bb and F maj seems to work, the tune isn't important...unless I need to purchase the actual music and then I get the key?
Here you go, i was feeling nice with nothing to do. Verse/Intro in C major - Chorus in D major. You will need to add your own grace/slur notes etc [in the intro G up to A], and do you own ending or whatever Garry
Why is the tune not important? From that short PDF you have attached, it looks like its in the key of 'C' - so no sharps or flats. When you purchase Pop 'Sheet Music' it is usually a Piano sheet, and more than likely just a basic guide with melody, chords and basic other stuff. But will certainly have key signatures. For people having trouble transcribing stuff, these Piano sheets would be a good starting point for working stuff out. For Bass specific lines [if thats what you are after], you would be better of looking for the stuff people post up in the Theory section, [there is also plenty of links to external sites for written Bass lines in the section] Its a shame they can not be all listed into one post for easy finding & reference. By the way - I think the original from your tune posted is in 'D' - 2 sharps. Garry
