4.
When it comes to fees, remember that union rates are generally regarded as minimums, budgets are tighter these days but if you are working for established producers and signed artists then you can push prices up a bit. I do anything from a speculation for points up to set rates above union minimums depending on the job.
Someone above has said 150.00 for a eight hour day, but in reality you should be looking at getting that or around that fee for A three hour session [And that would be roughly around the MU rate, which would include porterage etc] 400 to 500.00 for a whole days work would not be unusual. But like you said Jake, it depends on the budget, the profile etc. And more often than not, you would be told the fee and its a case of take it or leave it. If its someone you know they would try and get the money up. Garry
  5.
Yeah it seems a wise port of call, I suppose I better get an MU membership then!...(although It would help If I had £100 lying around to join!)
What ever fee you get, Further down the road other payments could/can come your way depending on what the session was for and what broadcasts etc. So PPL is worth joining, they collect any other performance money that may be due to you. http://www.ppluk.com/ Good luck with it all. Garry
  6. As Doddy says Musescore is very good, and free, but it is full on [But you need to start somewhere] I use Finale - but they have a great 'Idiot Proof' starter with 'Finale Notepad' for $9.95 You can download the Notepad demo and see how Idiot proof it is. 7. Yep, for sure a real knuckle full, and so well played. Actually i quite like the High Standards album, JB playing some standards for a change. Thanks for the link to the Basso Ridiculoso site. Garry
Why would reputable manufacturers produce USB audio interfaces with up to 16 ins/outs, if they don't work properly?
They do work properly. But the better one's are a bit more dosh wise. RME being one of the best and most respected around with really really solid Audio & Midi drivers. [And excellent converters] You will not see one bad review around. 13.
actually recent DAWs such as cakewalk 8.5 and newer come with an in built bridge app so you can use 32 bit plugins on the 64 bit version.
They do , but the J-Bridge has much more options for dealing with rogue plug ins... And can also do reverse bridge - 64 to 32 bit if needed. Garry

    Reason 5
The reason for Reason (sorry ) is I thought it might be more intuative when working with loops and samples. R.
All good DAW'S should be good for using loops and Samples and Midi. But Ableton Live really shines when using samples and loops. Comes with a huge library of sounds, loops and instruments. Garry
  15.
To use the full 8 gig of RAM, a 64 bit OS is needed (Windows 7x64) - and a 32bit DAW to be able to use all those free third party VST/VSTi's.
64 bit DAW's would come with its own 64 plug fx, and 64 bit VSTI'S etc However you can run 32 bit plugs and synths in a 64 bit DAW using J-Bridge [very cheap] http://jstuff.wordpress.com/jbridge/ For what its worth i am running Cubase 6 on W7 and a quadcore 64 bit machine [all x64] with no problems or crashes. 17.
i'd strongly recommend the waves and nomad factory plugins. also you mention singing, well autotune is a fantastic bit of stuff. d
Unless you want to use Torrents etc, the Waves plugs are very expensive, as are Nomad & Autotune/Melodyne. http://www.waves.com/content.aspx?id=90 The OP is better of investing in Soft synths/Modules. He made a point of wanting good composing sounds. If he is using Reaper, that has plenty of good usable FX, but does lack in The Synth/Sounds department. He would need to use 3rd party vendors for [good - realistic - Orchestral] sounds. Dance/sound scape sounds are easily achieved with the plenty of good free ones out there. There are also some good free drum samplers about. If you are on a tight budget just check the 'Free VST's' in the Recording sticky on this site, people have posted up some useful stuff. http://www.waves.com/content.aspx?id=90 Just a thought really. Garry

  19.
I don't want to spend a penny if the midi controller won't give me realistic sounding instruments. Midi Controller http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/5360...tml#sterling_uk http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/2889...tml#sterling_uk T
A midi controller will not give you [realistic] sounds. It will just transmit the midi data. Some keyboards [and the ones you are quoting] might come with sounds, but they will not be great sounds, just General Midi sounds. And they will have to be recorded via the Audio out. Garry

  21.
As previously stated, I've just bought a new laptop, quite high-spec too! But I am going to try a Firewire/USB adaptor first, to see if it works with my existing firewire interface, as it only costs a couple of quid for the adaptor. If that doesn't work, then I will have to look at USB interfaces. Any suggestions for a minimum 8-track simultaneous interface would be most welcome. £400/500 budget.
To be honest on that budget, there are plenty of great USB interfaces around. And you have a good spec Laptop as well. Not sure what ins & outs you are looking at, but RME stuff is top notch. Really good stable Asio & Midi drivers that work great at ultra low latency, with direct monitoring as well. Garry
