2.
Surely a demo should cover all genres to give a good impression of the product! IMHO of course!
Ah.....But a demo of Various genres might include something from the great Jaco ..... Then...well... we know how the rest goes. Garry
 3.
Sorry mate, I have to disargee. Its annoys me when drummers use playing in 'groovey' can't be done do a click. You put steve gadd to a click and it still sounds amazing. It's the players ability to be able to make the click feel good. If i'm playing to a click I use in-ears, as it helps you to lock into the click, but your timing comes from being a good player and practicing playing to a click in a relaxed way. At the beginning, I used to have my click very loud, now it's just like one of the other instruments in my mix, like walking down the road with a friend. You don't chase, you just move along with it. The players around you start to realise they need to need to be more sensitive to time and lock into the drums.. which is a miracle for guitarists and singers.. In the long run the band benefits from it. I'e played gigs to clicks and the band didn't the difference to the ones that I used it from the ones I didn't and that's how it should be.
I agree with all this, after years of playing shows and stuff to clicks, it all becomes second nature..... Even with the click, some musicians play in front, behind, on it etc... retaining a natural live feel. The only thing is that.....it don't speed up or drag - just how i like it.. If you do not want to mess with Laptops etc. Just record the stuff into a DAW, then bounce it down to Mini Disc or MP3 etc - It will be the cheapest way. Garry
 4.
Most laptops these days don't have Firewire, but most of the audio interfaces I'm looking at are Firewire. So would a Firewire IEEE 1394 6 Pin Male to Male USB 2.0 Adapter do the job, or would it be affected by the limitations of USB? I have just upgraded my laptop to: Intel Core i5-450M 15.6" HD LED LCD Intel HD Graphics 4 GB DDR3 Memory 500 GB HDD DVD-Super Multi DL Drive So I'm hoping I have a decent enough computer for the job, but it does not have Firewire!
I needed to transfer some Audio data from a external Firewire hard drive to USB input on a PC. I tried using a Adaptor, and in my case it did not work, so i think it might be hit & miss. [if it works at all] OldG's method would be the best bet, unless you re think and go the USB route. Garry
 5.
When I got to the slap part I actually stopped for a second or two to consider if it was necessary.
I hope you are a bit more decisive on the gig.... Garry
 6.
In fact i'd love to try pro tools just can't justify the cash.
When people talk about Pro tools, its not just the software...thats pretty cheap to buy. Top end studios and media broadcast will be using Pro tools HD. [If they use Pro tools] Not a Mbox or M-Audio interface running the Pro tools sequencer. In project studios any software on Mac or PC will get the job done. Then its down to how creative/musical the operator is. Garry
 7.
God I hate ........ slap bass! The main reason I gave up bass playing for some 20 years, cannot stand it.
I bet you got some drama Queenage out of that little performance. Garry
 8.
the 80's which to me was like a musical desert - level 42, mark (bl..dy) king, shakatac, electric drums, keyboard bands, etc, etc You cannot possiby have any idea of what it was like, truly
Not my idea of a musical desert....... Chaka Kahn, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Anita Baker, Steely Dan,Toto, Quincy Jones, Yellow Jackets, Chick Corea, all my favorite LA studio players, and god knows how many rock bands and the list goes on...... Garry
 9.
I've recently come to think that bass players are so much more musical than their guitar or piano equivalents, in that they are so capable of playing by ear that writing the sh*t down and posting it on the internet seems a waste of time.
A lot of Piano and Guitar players, and indeed Bass players that "write the sh*t down" do so to a high standard, and usually sell and earn from this sh*t in transcription books/tutorials, do arrangements for Orchestral parts, copy for companies supplying music for TV bands, School Orchestras and block buster films etc. So your way of thinking may be well off the mark. Its a big Musical world out there. You need to have good lugs [whatever instrument you play] to hear before you write the sh*t down. Garry
 10.
Do what they did in the old days and hire some attractive chatty women (sorry, a bit sexist, but it works).
What would you chat about - Hoovers and Kitchens ? Garry
 11. This one is Alright and free. http://free-loops.com/ Just click on the title of the loop and a pop up box will appear for download Not just Drum loops, there is also one hits and other instrument loops and patches. Midi files and some free VST's, plus a whole load of other stuff to help you along. I think they are Acid loops, so they should just stretch to the tempo you are using. There will be plenty of other sites, but this one is a good place to start....Enjoy. Garry
 12.
Anyway, while most of this thread was being created last night I was playing a 3-hour gig in a pub in Chiswick. Number of notes slapped = 0. Number of disappointed punters as a result = 0. Number of songs "missing something" = 0. Don't really matter whether or not I hate slap, I just don't need it. I suspect that most people don't.
Did you play Mustang Sally or Moondance? Garry
 13.
Please nooooooooo! Not another thread discussing the merits* of notation and the evils* of tab
And someone then slipping in... "Slap is for the five knuckle shufflers, Jazz is for snobs, Macca don't do it for me, Marcus Miller leaves me cold, and pro's don't earn any money, I can't get on with a fiver after 2 hours - see Bass for sale, Its the best one i have ever played..."... Garry
 14. Apart from the above links, go down to the theory section... Always plenty of Notation PDF's to download. Garry
 15.
Whilst touring with them, such bands as Free (with Paul Rogers, Simon Kirke and Paul Kossof) became friends and still are years on.
Remarkable man, seems he can speak to the dead as well. Garry
 16. If i have lost interest within a few bars, Which is usually someone soloing over loops and been done a million times before over the last decade, I am off out of the post. If I listen all the way through, [meaning i like it] i will say something complementary... What i find more odd - is someone taking the time to do a transcription [or a tab chord sheet etc] Then have it downloaded dozens of times, and have just two or three people say 'thank you' Unless there is wrong notes on the chart - Then just 'Bollox' would be fine.... Garry
 17.
Also - ditch Sonar,
Your opinion of course, and maybe just pilot error. Not that i am a Sonar user. Sean Murray, Composer for Call of Duty - Black ops, seems to get the job done in Sonar. 20.
Anyone bowing this?
Have done [not of late]....and its not easy to get a nice flow to it. If you are not careful it will sound like you are sawing down a tree. I have a part with some good bow markings somewhere - i will see if i can find it. Garry
 21.
We can agree however Cubase is pretty awful.
Based on what? Just curious, and nothing else... Garry
 22. I sold a couple of things last year, put sold next to the item, then have a PM several months later asking 'is it still for sale' Did not bother me.. But I can see why some people delete. Garry
