Basschat Awards: Gigging in the face of Adversity
lowdown replied to Happy Jack's topic in General Discussion
I once vomited in the toilet at the side of the stage during a big solo piano feature, and got back onstage to finish the set with the taste making me feel even worse... it was on an extremely rough crossing of the bay of biscay and the theatre lounge being in the bows of the ship was going up and down like a good un, 40-60 feet rise and fall whilst holding a double bass and trying to put on a show under the hot lights etc all conspired to give me my one and only bout of sea sickness. Blegh I definitely deserve some sort of recognition for that little episode.
Nah, Sorry - Thats the duty of a crusing Bassist, its all down to the booze. The person[s] to get the award would be the band member[s] staying on stage and not throwing up during the Bass solo/feature. Garry -
Basschat Awards: Gigging in the face of Adversity

I shot off the morning after my wedding to go on tour overseas for 4 weeks, my Father in-law even drove me to Birmingham airport. He likes me these days though, even though he has advanced Alzheimer's and can not remember who i am! Garry -
Thankyou though, if that's how everyone feels, feel free to close the thread Jake
Its not how everyone feels, like i said above, try the midi file route it does speed things up, and contrary to some peoples belief, its not cheating, it just speeds things up. And after all these days, its about time and work flow. Funny enough i was just thinking the other day - People take time to post up transcriptions and get loads of downloads, and very rarely get a Thank you reply underneath. And you are one of the few who do. Garry
Hey guys, currently putting together a function group, and writing out lead sheets/charts for the group is getting a bit tedious. Was just wondering if anyone out there has any that they don't mind sending me?? Anything and everything would be appreciated & it's all the usual suspects that you'd expect. Any help is great You can pm me on here, or email me, Cheers guys Jake
If you are snowed under with a lot of tunes to do - try google for the midi files [ millions of free ones out there] And import into Finale or Sibelius or any of the freebie notation programmes out there. Then you can transpose, tidy up, change things, then just print off. Saves a load of work that way. Of course there are some you will have to transcribe. But you can not get off that easy.. Here are a couple of free notaters. http://musescore.org/ http://www.nch.com.au/notation/index.html http://musettemusic.com/ Or you can get cut down versions of the biggies for about $20.00.
For me it is a very quick and simple answer! Write down all the things you love about all those basses and then a second list about all the things you dislike. Take that list to a luthier of your choice and have them make the bass of your dreams!
He will be left with a one stringed semi acoustic Banjo... Garry
My Aria SB is my favourite slapper by a long way. Narrow string spacing and light strings at a low action is the key IMO
My 70's Jazz Bass with a high action, strung 47-107, no scooping, sounds great [for me anyway] I think a big part of it is down to your technique, and the amount of work you put into it.
How many people on here regularly get hired to play both electric and upright bass? Have you found that playing both has increased your workload?
It did at one time, but the problem these days in shows at least, is fixers/MD's not wanting to [or budget permitting] pay doubling rates [assuming its a union contract] So other than shows if the bulk of your work is being done on Electric or vice versa you tend to get pigeon holed. [So and so is an electric player/so and so is an Upright player - not so and so is a Bassist ] But in theory it should increase your workload. Garry
All image, IMV.. ok voice, if you can even say that, and decent enough grooves but not a vocalalist you'd listen to, really. just my 2p.
I kinda agree with all that. Not so much her vocal range for me - but some suspect tuning. Great visuals though. Garry
Just re-read Lowdown's post. Its interesting that the rehearsals were so extensive. We had onw rehearsal and then the gigs - sounds like we had no chance!! It goes to show, doesn't it, that the reason the professionals sound good is because they put the hours in, not because they are sprinkled with the magic fairy mojo dust. I have no doubt that we woudl have sounded much better with that kind of preparation.
Down to ALW's finance really, and it always is. When JCS re appeared on Broadway in the Early 2000's they had even longer, buts that the Americans for you, Rehearse everything down to the last dotted quaver, nothing left to chance. Unlike in the UK where people are still winging it on opening night... Have fun Bilbo. Garry
On of my favourites. This should go into the pro-slap thread.
If you do that you will have an army of anti slap Basschatters hunt you down and cut off your thumbs. Garry
The last two times of band implosion have finished on violent notes
What like half the band finish Mustang Sally in 'C'. And the over half finish in 'C#' Or broken handbags? Oh and good to see you back mate. Still have the Ricky? Garry

Another one for not pointless. I use it in conjunction with palm mute for a pick style sound/effect. Garry -

Whole lotta love, [In various keys - but the right one] Rock around the clock. [and they some how manage to get lost in a twelve bar] Walking on the moon - and once again attempting this it could be anything note wise, its only the Rhythm that gives it away, with a 3/4 thrown in of course. And they manage to do these without asking if anyone has the TAB. Garry
