But I'm a big fan of the music they play together.
I am as well. And i am not a kiddy fiddler with permed hair, before anyone starts lobbing their grenades this way..... Garry

I have a MM4, it plays great... It came with a very low action that was set up great, no buzzing.... [but not for me - i like a C2C over head power action... ] I did not like the stock pre-amp though, so i had a Nordstrand 2 band pre-amp put in. Sounds great now for finger and slap.... So a +1 from me. Not tried the tried the Geddy Lee. Garry
Guess I was trying to make the point that, for me, Stevie Wonder is beyond just mere genius... Cheers, Steve
Yep, and i am with you all the way. Garry
Rats - missed it! Hopefully, iPlayer will have it. If MJ was considered a genius -- and I am a fan -- then what does that make Stevie Wonder?
Then i think it would read... 'Stevie Wonder IS a genius' That was a great show. NW does lay it down just a bit. Garry

And dont forget the 4 stg natural Roscoe with the pointy head stock.. Inc Bassworld and Basschat it has had a least 4 owners [ inc me], and more i suspect.. It became known as the ol' Slapper.
Sing the bassline.
A massive +1. I have always thought that this the best approach. I was given this advice when i was 16, and i took it on board. I wished i had listened to a lot more advice when i was ' Only Sixteen' Garry
I don't quite get your point here, were you amused because you confused a great bass player or did you seriously think you could hold down that gig?
I see you still have the German beer hangover.. Sorry that did make me snigger a bit. Garry

Good one Pablo Garry

Can you imagine getting a call for that gig? ' Hi Ready Freddy, do you fancy doing a residency playing the same stuff every night for a few months in a big tent in South East London, it will be a cheque' Garry

Actually Graham's Site looks like a useful place. Maybe saying hello at his introduction would have gone down better. Oh well no harm done. Welcome Graham. Garry

I would have thought Midi files are the way to go. Download the file and strip out the tracks you dont need. If its an 01 midi file, it will all be on separate tracks. You can then change endings, keys and use your own sounds. Plenty of free ones out there, some are crap, but if you look around some are ok. I have done plenty for my wife's Duo, [ she or they then pays me in other ways ] Saves the time of transcribing the original track. Garry
I'm not interested in choosing between them. Two great players, both Jamerson and Kaye. It's not either one or the other. Stupid question - it's like being in primary school.
+1 Garry
Using my own drummer; first I havent got one trained (bring out the gimp etc etc LOL!) and second, I dont really think that would look great either, "Your drummer is so difficult to reign in that I brought along Gimp here, he can count to four and plays real good, mind if he sits in?".
Why not? He might get the gig as well. Garry

You could ask them if you could use your own drummer for the audition. Garry
They felt their drummer was (and I quote) "on one a bit" and thus not helping the funk flow As a result the groove wasnt quite the Motown, funky soul thing they were after, and would I be willing to work with them some more to show that I can cop the feel that they are after. Note, they are posistive I can, its a question of whether I want to (duh!!)
That seems to be a bit of a worry.... I presume he is the regular drummer? And he is having trouble playing songs he has done before. I think after the audition it should have been a case of........ 'look, i will let you know man...[ then chew your lip]... the drummer is a bit of a worry' I hope it works for you. Garry
for a mellow Marcus cop his Modulus Fretless Shenanigans on Legends DVD Miller + Gadd is Mighty Good
+1 Its funny that when people chat about the fretless players about... Marcus never seems to get a mention... He has done some great stuff, with superb intonation. Oh yer.."Boogie On Reggae Woman" Phat Drummers and Phat Bass lines - good combination. Garry
Maybe the Lotto comment refers to 'making it' as a well known, respected 'first-call' session bassist such as Guy Pratt, Nathan East etc.
Thats why i said .. 'Also what a person defines as pro Muso' Booze and bugger made me snigger. After seeing what some people get up to on Cruise ships... Garry
Pro... check House... check children... check food..... check booze...... bugger
Garry
Here's my advice: Realise that you have a better chance of winning the lottery then 'making it' as a pro musician.
I am not sure about that one. Lottery is luck, big time. I dont know any lotto winners, but i know plenty of full time muso's Full time Muso is down to hard work. Also what a person defines as pro Muso.... driving up and down the country in the back of a Van hoping to get some kind of deal with original tunes. Or, the more realistic approach [ or not, that depends on the hard work ] Shows,Cruises,Functions, sessions, etc, maybe combined with Teaching and composing for media etc, and this approach is much more common these days, than just an out and out gigging bassist. Isolation of skills required by a 'professional' bass player
lowdown replied to Oscar South's topic in General Discussion
Another Pro here. *waves* Some of the things that I have found to be important for my career are......... -Good reading skills........for theatre work, sessions, big bands or bands with a large pad. -A quick ear..............to be able to learn songs on the fly, either in a studio or on a gig. -Decent knowledge of theory.........don't want to play a major 7 over a dominant chord. -Stylistic Diversity.........Rock,Pop,Jazz,Country,Funk,Big band etc - Versatility..........MD-"Can you play more/less notes?" Me-"No Problem". Transposing a tune, changing the groove etc. -Good technique.......No point being able to read a hard chart if my hands can't play it. -Doubling on Electric and Upright........doubled my work load. These are just some of the skills that have really helped me with being a Professional musician. Of course there are other, non musical things, like Personality,Image,Attitude,Having a Reliable car -I could go on.
A big +1 to all that.... I would add to a quick ear, that also means having a large repertoire of tunes under your belt... although Doddy might have been leaning towards that when he said 'on the fly'. There is also the other side, composing... many, many Opportunities these days, with hundreds of digital broadcast stations around. They all want and need Music. Its not a closed shop anymore. Along with teaching, all part of being a full time Muso these days. Its not just about being a Bass player. Garry -
Mr Alphonso Johnson was and still is a dude on Bass. Listen to your Dad more. And keep eating your carrots and greens, you will get to like them to. Garry
