  1. I know of a couple of Conductors/MD's who would 'literally go fuc*%ng nuts' with the arranger or, engraving company, if presented with that last bar in a score they were working with...
  2. I got "Streamline" (Lenny White) in 1978 because I had heard Marcus on 'Lady Madonna'.
  3. Once again, my post was: "Marcus was certainly known in New York during the mid to late 70's."
  4. If you are suggesting that The AWB from the early 70's, were a Brit Funk band, on a 'Bean9seventy thread', you might as well end your life now. Even then, If you manage to escape with your life still intact, there is a small matter of 'Last.fm' hunting you down...."The Average White Band are a Scottish funk and R&B band.."
  5. Is a Precision Bass any good for Brit Funk? Just asking for a friend.
  6. He's such a terrific musician..! Oddly enough, I was only listening to him earlier today. Yellow Jackets & WDR Big Band with a blinding solo from him.
  7. David Raksin. One of the old school film and tv composers, along with his amazing arranging skills. I'm having a relaxing evening listening to some of his works and putting my head back together after the 'Level 42 Before Level 42' thread...
  8. Good luck getting that over to Cryptic Meg. I believe Lonnie Liston Smith met Marcus during Jingle sessions or some club gig, mid 70's. Marcus was certainly known in New York during the mid to late 70's. He played on this (1978) and I believe he wrote it in 1975:
  9. Probably importing cheap Instruments from the far east as well....and doing it the Chinese Way.
  10. David Margen is the Bassist on Runnin'. He was using a Precision while in the Santana band during that period in the late 70's. Although that track 'Aqua Marine' sounds like a Jazz Bass. Interesting little story about what he got himself mixed up in. The link is lifted from the dark side over the pond. https://www.talkbass.com/threads/what-happened-to-david-margen.301996/
  11. And probably the time before that (several times)... *Brit funk* bassists who crashed around 1970's Denmark Street, disco dancing and cryptic whatever ..! Merry Groundhog day 2021, Bean9seventy. I'm glad you could make it.
  12. Tom Kennedy still grooving away...The rest of the band doing their bit as well...
  13. I love that album. It's interesting how the Trio have been panned as well, Ray Brown on the right side. You can hear every note and articulation so clearly.
  14. Most of the Albums that Bilbo has already mentioned are always on my list. Also, a couple of albums with John Patitucci I really like: Chick Corea - The Electric Band. And, JP's Double Bass work on 'Dave Grusin - West Side Story'.
  15. I got that album when it first came out and to this day, it's still one of my all time favourite albums. The playing, groove and arrangements on it are blinding.
  16. I once witnessed an officers mess (drunken) game which was a 'Jousting' contest. One officer would sit on the shoulders of another officer (the horse). The one sitting on top (the knight) had one arm outstretched with his fist clenched. Then on a signal, they would charge another knight on his horse and try to knock them over. This would go on until someone fell off. Also, bets were being taken. At some point, a senior office entered and stopped it. He explained to all the idiots who were engaging in the Jousting competition, that when you sit on the shoulders of someone else, you are in fact, quite a bit taller and.... very likely that you will hit your head, or worse, decapitate yourself on the ceiling mounted, spinning tropical fan....these were officers...
  17. The Gurkhas made the best Curries.
  18. I seemed to have made a career out of forces gigs...apart from the usual functions and Xmas shows in this country... I have done tours during the 1970's and 80's of Germany (USAF, British and Nato bases) with various Soul and Rock acts. A good part of the 90's working on the British CSE tours, backing a lot of the TV Celebs and older pop acts. The shows were mini production shows with three or four turns and a bunch of dancers, a tour manger, along with lighting and sound crew etc...There was a pool of us, about 25 musicians, so you would go out a few times a year on two week tours. The same players and MD's, just different combinations. Apart from personal Instruments, all the gear was provided. These tours included, The Falklands and Ascension islands, again Germany, Cyprus, Belize, Northern Island and a couple of the Highland camps and bases. Plus Kuwait and Saudi a few days after the first Gulf War. Every show, without fail, the show folks would be hosted in any of the Junior ranks mess', Sergeants mess' or the Officer club/mess for a meal and a fosters up. It was their way of saying thank you. They all tried to out do each other. They had to be better than the previous venue... I must say, each rank was as bad as each other for Shenanigans and Boozing. The further you got away from the UK, the more outrageous they got. From CSE tours in Belize and The Falklands.
