Get all my Strings from this place.. A really good selection of Makes and gauges.. I am very surprised more of you guys dont drop in on this place. Quick postage also. Garry
I seem to recall that pretty much all Jeff Finch basses I've ever seen are either copies or approximations of other companies' basses... would that be accurate to say? That one above is pretty obviously based on an F Bass.
That was because he made to your spec .... So if you wanted a bass that was like a ******** . Thats what you got , and usally better. I think you will find the above Bass was around before 'F' Basses. Unless that is a newer version than the one i tried Donkey's years ago. Top bloke though ..and a good player who new his stuff.
Slap sound wise I'm partial to that of Mr Miller... although I appreciate a lot of that is in his hands Stu
I think you have found a good staring point I have heard players slapping a Passive Jazz bass through a polytone combo.. With a big funky tone... Amps and cabs are only part of the problem.Along with over EQ'd Basses.. What sounds good in the Bedoom etc , does not usually translate to a gigging situation. To low a action can sound great at home solo'd...but on a gig to thin... For me a higher action worked..ment a lot of woodshedding. infact to a point where it got to loud... [and cured my Gas...in search of the Holy Grail of Basses and amps for sound] so a compressor came in handy to tame the pops. and pulls.. Not so sure mid scooping is such a good idea... I should think you should be looking for a consistant sound for Finger and slap.. Just my two pennies worth ...what do i know..just a middle aged ******** Garry
Thanks again, very helpful. I've used Logic and I do like it, so I'm probably going to stick with it, it's just the interface that I need to sort out. What's something like this used for ?. http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Delta44-main.html I've seen this listed on Steve Lawsons albums, as something he's used.
I cant remember...but i think its just Audio...no midi.. Garry

If you go down the Logic route... Consider the extra outlay and go for RME Interfaces... Fantastic drivers , Near zero latency the actually does what it says... And Fantastic Converters....for great sound quality... Plus with Logic , every thing is there in the Box.. And now the Price has come down... great.. Garry

Nasty fret clang - What am I doing wrong?
Do it logically and sequentially, or you may end up chasing your ar5e for ever and swapping basses like Beedster (no offence meant bud!)
Lol..... Reminds me ..when i used to teach From Home... One Guy was going through High end Basses and Amps Like the clappers..[Rich Family] Every couple of weeks something new....and always sounding s***e... With a very very no action... He then went crusing with a band for 18 months [4 hours playing every night] Then when i next bumped into him...he had a 70's Jazz with a really high action.. And he had a really good sound...and had got really good articulation... Constant playing made his left hand fingers really strong.. Garry -

Could just be The Action is a Tad Low.. I remember that sort of thing used to drive me crazy.... Until i was having lessons with a then BBC tv Player... He got me to take the Action up...[alot] I hated this at first..impossible to slap [Wrong approach.. ] But with constant Practise ..me old Fingers got stronger and i was away...Slapping and all. I just hate any noise...and it really shows up when you are DI ing or in the Studio... And have no time to F*** around with EQ etc.. But everyone has a different touch...so you could also be digging in to much for the action you have... As pointed out above...the Gary Willis link is a great start. Garry -
