Mate you should have seen the drummers we turned down! When you're making a bit of money suddenly every pro out there wants to be best mates. ). Yer some of the so called 'PRO'S' should use the money to buy a metronome.. Or maybe just buy a gnome and stay in the garden and talk about what sticks they use. Garry
Shadows and Light - with the exception of that bloody awful bass solo that he did, verbatim, in about every show of his I've heard - is Jaco at his best, fitting in with the band rather than dominating it, playing melodic bass under the vocal rather than overly complex lines in competition, and producing a tone with relatively crude equipment that is still for me the definitive fretless sound. Although I recognised the technical brilliance of his first album, and a lot of his WR stuff, to me it wasn't musically exceptional; Shadows and Light was the pinnacle of his musicality. Chris
Must agree with all that.... Interestingly...I read somewhere a couple of weeks ago , an article from Jeff Berlin about Jaco.. Not been a Natural soloist [in JB's opion] But all his Solo's and playing where pre-composed.. I think Mr Berlin should have a listen [or another listen] to the above... It is Jaco at his best [and un pre-composed].. I still love 'Come on over' with Sam & Dave..I bet that inspired the Bass line for 'Hit me''Hit me' Garry
Wow, this is being conclusive. My punchiest bass is a peavey 5-string with through body stinging, big heavy body and passive humbuckers. Taperwound strings might be a factor in this case. Think my pre butchered Westone Thunder will get the punch experiment treatment. Once I have a neck sorted, drop a bridge position MM humbucker in it, see what that does.
That really does all add up to some punch...me thinks.. Garry

For Me ... i seem to get a punchy sound... with high action and heavier strings....no matter what bass. Another factor to consider.... But of course we are all different beast's... so forget what i have just said I must admit though....ye olde MM style Pup does seem to Punch it out a bit... Garry
