Playing in the band for a pantomime matinee and then again in the evening. Is that two shows?
Yes, correct, two shows.
I've often thought this version of "Both Sides Now" by Joni Mitchell (used in the film 'Love Actually") could literally have worked great with just her and the bass - does anyone know of any other examples of truly understated (or under-played, but perfect for the song) performances like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coNo-CrAb4g
Of course JM sings well on the OP video, but, for me what makes this version so special, is the absolutely terrific arranging and conducting by ‘Vince Mendoza’. Really top class stuff from him.
Good news... do we get the back-story?
Not really sure, other than that someone had seen a share on Facebook locally and knew where the Bass was. The power of social media really did play it’s part. Something like over 400 Facebook shares. https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/bassbackintherightplace?hc_location=ufi -

Result. The Bass has now been returned to it’s owner. -
Although it is Rutger Gunnarsson on 'Dancing' Queen', he isn't on every ABBA tune. An English studio player (Mike Watson) who lived in Sweden at the time, did a bit as well An interesting little read about both of them here.
Hi All, Sorry, I’m not sure this is the best place to ask, but I need a notated copy of the Sax solo for China in Your Hand by T'pau. I could of course notate this myself, but I just don’t have the time at the moment. Can anyone help? Thanks Greg
Here you go, Greg. It's in Bb and the transposed Alto part is in 'G'. (both parts below). When downloading, if you can't open the PDF, change the file name (last three letters) to pdf, then all should be fine. Just to add, the solo was played by the marvelous Gary Barnacle.
Slap works quite well in the right hands though.Unfortunately fashion, and bad taste(Imo) has lead us to this point. You don't hear us debating tapping, or harmonics in the same way. Its a shame, because in the right hands slap bass can be so musical. Of course I'm not saying this Marcus Miller vid is all that, its subjective. Quite an aggressive/percussive style for sure. Its just another technique thats been used in the wrong way for a long many years.
People may not like him stylistically, but with Marcus, not only is his time and groove always on it, he oozes melodic content. (Sadly something a lot of Bassists don’t have during a solo - Just finger led, aimless wandering). Terrific musician.

Abe Laborial was the guy for ‘Conga Slapping’ when winding up a solo (with a dance to match).

I remember this series, great viewing at the time for practise. I used to nip into the Bass Centre (Wapping) and pick them up, (although I seem to remember mine being VHS ?).

Guitar Players Who Don't Get Their Due Respect
Keep going, guys. Soon you'll have every guitarist listed.

to which you could add all the country / Nashville session players, bluegrass , steel string fingerstyle / folk and flamenco players all labouring in semi-obscurity.
Well look, Barking. We are following the advice of 'bassace', but believe me, we will eventually get around to all the country / Nashville session players, bluegrass, steel string fingerstyle / folk and flamenco players. Next up after that lot will be a selection of 'Dog & Duckers'. So Hang in there, it just takes time. -
What key is the part in post #2..? It's supposed to be in 'C'. The post #11 version is a tone below that. If any other key is required, it's a matter of minutes for me to change it. Just say how much higher/lower than the post #2 version.
In post # 2, although no F sharp is written on the clef to indicate the key is 'G', it is indeed 'G'. (same as record). In post #11 it has two flats, but should be one. Tone down from above. But I think you know that and are just testing us all out, you crafty senior, so & so...

Musicians, and at a guess mostly Bassists, chatting & discussing music & Bass, specifically a Bassline line on a Bass/musicians forum is 'rowlocks' ??? Sorry, the post just amused me, that's all
I'm going to have to agree, though, something about it sounds better! I'm assuming it might be because I tend to favour 60's soul recordings over 90's soul recordings.
I think it sounds better as well, not sure why though.
-
I'm gonna have to say that's also a G#.
Originally listened on my iPad and thought it was an 'A', I have just sat at the Piano, and listened to YouTube through my desk top and yes you are right... So, Duck stayed true to the original.
-
Not really. But I'm intrigued that it seems to be a deliberate note choice, rather than a flub.
I think it's a clam ...It's a bad fit with the vocal and not in keeping with the spirit of the original. If it's not a wrong note and a personal choice, maybe he couldn't hear the vocal line when recording ? If you listen to the original, it's an 'A' (Bmin7 chord) and sits much better with the vocal. As others have said, it's not wrong to play the G# (well maybe in strict scale terms it is), but in this case it don't sound so nice. (All in my ears opinion of course). The original (I think)
