1. I thought some folks might like to enter this Comp. You do need to use One 'Embertone' Instrument in the arranging part of the comp, but I believe you can use any of their free Instruments from their website. Here is the blurb. http://www.embertone.com/strangerthemes/
2. The Egyptian Army Band (One of the Wonders Of The World)...well...they are keen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_69NN4B5y_I http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGvaO6zubLs
3.
I've used unrealBook for a few years now. https://itunes.apple...d370135173?mt=8 You can take photos of existing charts or upload PDF's. this can all be arranged into setlist a for each project. I also like the ability to draw over the top so if you have a different arrangement, need to add a cue or spot a mistake in the chart you can easily scribble notes. I've even done this mid gig between songs. I've transcribed everything in Sibelius over about the last 10 - 15 years, so it was really easy for me to convert the charts to PDF and then upload then to unrealBook. Also, for simple chord charts I use iReal pro. https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/ireal-pro-music-book-play-along/id298206806?mt=8 It's well worth learning how to make your own charts within this. The bonus here is if you set up the form of the song correctly you can use it for play along too. The transpose feature on this has saved me a few times too.
Pretty much all this for me (Both Apps). iReal Pro for any Jazz standards I am unfamiliar with. unRealbook for my Notation and Scores. It's great that you can amend the PDF's with scribbles and changes etc. Top App.
4. Yes, this is a great track. Another Classic Anthony Jackson Bass line.
5.
Deps are very valuable. Look after them as you might need them again in the future.
Indeed, and in the case of doing professional pit work, the deps might need YOU, at some point in the future. Shows open and close all the time. It's about networking and what better way to network - Depping.
6. A heads up from VI Control for an updated 14 gig Percussion library now with an Arp setting. Not free, but a very modest donation fee for an excellent library. I purchased this the first time around and well worth the fee. Direct link. http://www.modwheel.co.nz/perc-plus-redux VI Control post. http://vi-control.net/community/threads/perc-library-is-back.60324/#post-4061319
7. Same. Although there has been times over the years when it was very last minute and extra was paid as a thank you.
8. Erm... let me see... Con Sordino or 0db Brickwall Limiter this month? Interesting picture.
9.
Presonus' technical support is a joke. I emailed them about the problem, the emailed back with links to a support ticket with "updated information" on their support site. Click on the link, and you are required to register. Registration completed, and guess what, no open support tickets nor anyway of finding the ticket they say they have created. At that point I gave up and processed a cancelation via iTunes.
Support over at Presonus is usually quick and very good. I suppose these things happen though. Regarding the support ticket. It is always placed in your account page. 10. Well done to the winners and all that entered. A couple of gems in there. Although I had a listen a couple of days ago, sorry but I didn't vote. I intended to, but it seems that I ran out of month. (my vote would have tipped the balance - I will leave you in suspense). Need to remind myself, that February is a month, short on days....
11.
I don't think there is any benefit of the doubt to be given. A light hearted jest is always good in my book.
Absolutely. To me, 'The Boy' was just speaking in the spirit of the thread. (well, my take anyway).
12.
Nope! I just checked on my NAS. On tge CD single for Snowblind, there's isolated bass/drum/vocal mixes of Snowblind and Trans-Island Skyway.
Oh... I didn't know about. It must be these? Thanks for the heads up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8px0fO_es5A
13. Facebook link don't work for me either. Maybe the link problem is something to do with that 'Trump' fellow over your side of the pond?
14.
Just on the Fagan/bass thing, I'd highly recommend the bass and drum mixes that turned up on the b-sides of some of the Kamakiriad period singles. Beautiful stuff.
Are you talking about this (Among others), NancyJohnson? If so, yes great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IoVcBo0eDg
15. This is my fave... Jean Michel Jarre had a go as well. No surprise then, that Kraftwerk thought they should Knock One Out. ANYMORE?? Yes... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Bzcf-TPl30
16.
No. Fair enough you got me.
Now look at what you have started. I never knew that 'Popcorn' was so popular in 1972. Apart from the Hot Butter version already posted. There was this from Apollo 100 - which sounds like some kind of Acid trip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmilpJoP-m4 That were not content with that, so Apollo 100 had another go at it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bh5kInh5G8&list=PL8XFxV0apdmqJepRnmg1cvS10g0BXl_V2&index=5 Anarchic hacked away at it in 1972 as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ap2_erSXBQ
17.
https://en.wikipedia...e_P%C3%A9tomane
Indeed. I believe there is a performance on the Da Tube somewhere.
18.
I'd like to point out that talking out of one's arse is not yet recognised as a valid way of creating speech.
Yes, very true. Although, it was possible to recognise a tune out of the arse, of a certain French, Professional Flatulist. And not forgetting, the glorious arsehole tunes from 'pro' gigging farter, 'Mr Methane'.
19. Search on YouTube 'Piano Lessons". There are quite a few channels worth subscribing to. (For beginners and upwards). There is certainly enough to get you started. Watching the visual side of playing is really helpful and quite motivating. This guy is worth a look for a novice (ten video lesson course). http://youtu.be/drO86DNI348 And of course 'Lypur' is always recommended (worth subscribing to his channel), along with the book 'Alfreds', for the written theory side of things (mentioned above). Using the two gives you a balance if you are not using a teacher. Lypur is more in depth than the guy above. http://youtu.be/vphWgqbF-AM
20. There is a list here. http://appcrawlr.com/ios-apps/best-apps-music-notation Although not free, I went with 'Notion', Been using Notion for iPad Air for over a year now. By far the best I have tried. It can be simple or in depth, depending on your use. No crashes, easy to use and very established with regular updates. About a tenner I think and a Tenner well spent. (no adds and no junk). For about a fiver extra, you can update for finger and stylus input. That works great!! http://www.presonus.com/products/Notion-for-iOS Plenty of videos to get you going as well. http://www.presonus.com/products/Notion-for-iOS/media
21. It was indeed Will Lee, doubling the Bass Synth of Phil Phillanganes. The whole 'Nightfly' album is chock full of outstanding Bass playing. EDIT: Here is an old Basschat post regarding 'Raindrops' with a notated chart, along with the chord changes. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/59948-walk-between-the-raindrops/
22. Unfortunately, you just take it on the chin and do a good job (this time). Then in the future if they call again, enquire if this is likely to happened again. If it is, politely decline the gig if it bothers you. But, I must admit, in my life time of depping on shows and functions, and indeed if I am getting cover for myself, folks generally have the attitude of...'You look after your dep/subs'. Because you never know when you might need them at short notice. If you are the regular and your other gig/show falls through, just swallow it and have a night off. Nothing more embarrassing than asking for your gig back. Unless you are scared of losing your gig, of course.. What I usually do if it's my gig gone tits up, is ring up the other player involved and suggest that if he gets offered another gig on that day, maybe offer that to me, or he does that gig and I do my original gig. (providing band leaders/fixers agree, of course). Even if you are the original player, it never pays to be a tit in these situations. You never know when you might want another gig yourself.
23. I wouldn't worry about messing up HMWYRS, even 'Norman' has a fight with it sometimes... I suppose the thing with it is, relax when your playing it and don't force it. Whoops, at around 00:48 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBIRj3JW3h0
24.
I've just recently started to appreciate Jazz after years of not being interested in it at all and most recently I've really been enjoying checking out a lot of the Yellowjackets' stuff on you tube. There's a piece in this video that starts at 24:55 in that I'd like to know the name of if anyone can help me at all?
Some real old Yellowjackets that you might enjoy, with some lovely playing all round. From the 'Casino Lights' Album. 'Monmouth College Flight Song'. Terrific solo Guitar from Robben Ford and grooving Bass from Jimmy Haslip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pl3e0BZTsXQ And 'Revelation'. Although a YJ tune, for some reason a couple of different players on this TV version. A pair of wasters called Alex Acuna (Drums) & Will Lee (Bass). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9Lmm9rzZfY
25.
Mind you I loved and still love Nightfly, despite seeing an unfavourable review of it on this forum a few weeks ago.
Yes, made me chuckle. I think it is a great album, and considering this is a Bass Players forum, the amount of serious Bass work on that album goes completely under the Radar.
