That's what you get when, like Geddy, you use 3 Amp fuse wire on a bass instead of proper bass strings...! Agree with the comments on Geddy's later Jazz bass sound. On the CD version of Rush in Rio, the bass sounds like a bag of spanners being thrown down a lift shaft. Worst production on a live album I've ever heard.

Hey, man, you' gotta get hep to the beat and mooov with the times, daddio! Dig it? Thing have moved a long way from the Book of Common Prayer and Charles Wesley hymns (I still love a bit of Wes and a male voice choir, though!). That said... our church is nowhere near as OTT, stadium rock and ridiculously over-caffeinated as those ones... we still rock those songs, though.

The whole context thing for overplaying is fascinating - I think about it a lot in the context of playing at church. There are a couple of fave tunes we do which are heavy with driving 16th notes and work really well (IMHO). However, these are melodically simple lines and tend to use the busy approach during sections of songs allowing dynamics across the song. Here are the ones I'm thinking of... However, there are some which are just a dog's breakfast of overplaying where the bassist thinks he's Rocco Prestia and sprays 16th notes liberally all over the track whether they're needed or appropriate or not. This is my personal pet peeve offender. The bass "solo" on the build up to the bridge is just daft and OTT...When we do this tune my bass line is NOTHING like this...

I used to play "Name that tune" with the organist at my old church. He was a keys player in a number of bands around the local circuit so would slip some apposite tunes into the offering music disguised in classical organ music clothing. Some faves I recall for the offering were "Money" by Pink Floyd a la Saint Saens, "Money Makes The World Go Round" by JS Bach, "Money Money Money" in the style of Handel and a Bach meets Alan Parsons Project medley which he swore before the service that I'd never suss out...

More isn't more... in that case it's perfect. See also "What is Hip?" Now take that playing approach on Carole King's "You've Got a Friend" or Joni Mitchell's "River" and you've got a whole different result. As others have said, context is everything when it comes to overplaying or not.

Seen this vid a load of times and always thought “...but all those guys are just to tasteful to REALLY overplay...” Yes, even their overplaying is on the restrained side compared to what I’ve heard in church and in gigs...

You’d be surprised what is of interest. Last y ear I finally got to try out a Sire! Bring some stuff anyway!

Just popped up an event on Facebook and copied in all my bassist chums... good if others could do the same!

You'll want an inline tuner pedal or get @obbm to make you up a cable with one of his fancy shmancy silent unplugging jack sockets on. PS no Planetwaves leads or angled sockets if you want to be able to plug in the Wal...!

Fantastic idea, happy to volunteer a Wal and an Aria SB700 for the blind test.

For goodness sake, Andy. Get yer priorities right!

Don't have to. There tends to be a big "show and tell room" where folks can set up their rig for others to have a look at and (with permission) have a try out. One of the nicest things about the Bash, chatting with others about their gear, maybe having a quick noodle on a bass you've always wondered about, oogling the instruments and amps, going "WTF" in a good way about some of the self-builds that Basschatters have brought along (don't miss the Psilos bass which @The Greek is bringing... an absolute think of wonder and a great build story by our very own @Andyjr1515 ). But if you can bring then do - there's no snob factor about the gear either. In fact, a couple of years ago my highlight was finally being able to try out a Sire Marcus Miller Jazz to see what they're like and comparing some Squier and MIM Fenders. Fair enough, last year's highlight was oogling the Psilos and a couple of other totally insane(ly brilliant but still insane) project builds from @orangefriday. If you want a flavour of what to expect have a look at the blogs that @Silvia Bluejaywrites each year. https://silviabluejay.blog/2017/12/08/basschat-se-bash-2017/ Best day of the year!

That was yours everyone was having a go on at the last Bass Bash, wasn't it. Even through the tiny Barefaced 1x10 with a Ricky doing Chris Squire impressions it sounded pretty darned good and pretty darned loud to me. If I was still gigging in a function band there would absolutely be one in my gig bag as a spare/insurance policy.

I thought he was talking about going to the toilet. It's true, you can't beat a really good dump!

On the bright side, you had a really clear monitor feed for the second half of the song since they seemed to leave the array pointing away from the audience!

Remembered another one courtesy of my lovely wife, who gave me this for my birthday. We both went together (and got soaked). It was an amazing concert experience, though.

Known your namesake and Karl for years (decades, actually!). Superb band. Actually Mac was my favourite of all their vocalists and it’s so sad that he’ll never be back with the band. I’m glad they got Glynn back when Damien left again, his voice is so different to Damian’s but I think it has a great rock feel to it!

Just Buy Them - things you wish you bought sooner

Flats. Only tried them a couple of years ago because @rumblefish dared me to try them on my Wal. Got some La Bellas courtesy of @CamdenRob who had a spare set which were surplus to requirements. Loved the strong fundamental heavy tone. Never looked back and since having them on both my Wals I play a lot more plectrum bass as it just sounds so good.
