1. A few disparate recordings really set the hairs standing up on the back of my neck every time... Elgar's Cello Concerto http://youtu.be/zv6w1VoEJaE Little Wing by Stevie Ray Vaughan http://youtu.be/An4uDegHB8s Gustav Holst's The St Paul's Suite - particularly the last movement, "The Dargason" when the melody from Greensleeves starts weaving its way around the main tune. He wrote this for his local girls schools annual concert... Amazing! http://youtu.be/5Sxbj1AKrj8
2. Came across this Lee Ritenour video posted on Facebook today. Never seen it before but I think that it absolutely epitomises why Abe Laboriel Sr has always been one of my absolute favourite bass players. Playing totally in the pocket and utterly for the tune. And then when he does step forward for his solo he still stays totally musical and holds down the groove - even in the most over-the-top 8 bars of the climax of the solo. Such an accomplished and tasteful player - whether backing some jazzers, walking the bass for Donald Fagen, being soulful for Michael McDonals, playing on a movie soundtrack (he's done some stunning playing on recent Disney sound tracks - Zootropolis and, yes, even the dreaded Frozen!) or indulging himself (tastefully) on his solo work. Love, love, love this!
3.
Trevor's post has just reminded me that his blog should also be in the list! From his signature: Wal Bass History
Aw bless you Silvia! In that case if my blog is worth a read then these two definitely are too... Bluejay's General (but hugely bass heavy) music blog - https://bassclef141.wordpress.com And... Her blog about bassing leftie in a righty world (says the person who's leftie for everything except bass/guitar, using a knife and fork and blowing my nose) - https://leftybassgirl.wordpress.com
4. Interesting to see Rob's The Gibson Bass Book website listed among the top 50. It is a really nicely designed website too!
5.
I love my 30 year old Wal Custom Fretless. I hate that it never be quite sounds like it is in tune.
D'you suppose Pete got the measurements and spacings on the fretless fingerboard a bit wrong? Everyone knows that when they aren't exactly right the bass sounds a bit out of tune as you go up the neck.
6. Hi Stevie, I left you a comment on the FB Wal group. As with others I'd recommend asking OBBM to make up an extension lead, 1/4" jack on one end, 1/4" inline jack socket on the other. His website is http://www.rock-wire.uk.com My concern with an extender socket is you're putting unusual leverage on the bass' jack socket. Remember that a Wal uses a mechanical make/break switch in the Switchcraft jack socket rather than the usual active circuit power arrangement... shorting across the ring and sleeve of a TRS stereo jack socket. I'd be wary of adding consistent lateral mechanical strain on the socket just in case. With an extension cable from OBBM you can just attach the wireless transmitter to your strap (or slip it in your pocket).
7. Looks great, even in its interim mode. Congrats on a happy ending (middle?) to your Ariatastic saga. I'm right in thinking you sourced a replacement 700 too, aren't I?
8. Did you know that Wal basses aren't entirely perfect and wonderful? How dare I suggest such a thing? Well, the slot on the bridge for locating and anchoring the E string is maybe a few thou too narrow. It means the some chunkier E strings can be a bit of a faff to install and get seated right. Suppose I might as well junk such a fundamentally flawed instrument then!
9.
Fx pedals have the input and output on the wrong sides. Input should be on left, out on right.

I wondered about that recently too when setting up a pedalboard. It's weird to us because our language goes that way, right? If we spoke Arabic, Hebrew etc it would seem perfectly sensible.
Just mentally thinking through my pedal board every single pedal has input on the right and output on the left. And given I own pedals by TC Electronics, Joyo, Morley, EHX, Boss and Tech 21... I would hazard you're seriously swimming upstream on that one
lead comes out of instrument on right, so, goes into righthand side of pedal...one less thing to trip over (if you're righthanded, of course)
Logical...
10.
You're comparing apples to oranges. 4x16ohm speakers is either a 4ohm 4x10 or a 4ohm total 2x2x10. An 8ohm 4x10 would use different impedance speakers.
Knew there was a fatal flaw thingy there somewhere!
11. Has no one mentioned... Say 500W amp into one 8 ohm 4x10 =350W(ish) delivered to the cab... 500W amp into 2 2x10 8 ohm cabs = 500W delivered to the cabs... Doesn't the old maxim of more cabs to deliver more volume not more watts? Or have I missed something. OK, there are load of variables at play but given equivalent speakers/efficiency etc would 2 8 ohm 2x10 be louder than 1 8ohm 4x10?
12. You could one of those fridge smell eliminators in the case with it. It's basically a tub of bicarbonate of soda and will help remove smells from both bass and case without the cleaning job that a bicarb bath would require. But a good clean with a silicone free household polish first won't hurt either. Body, neck and top and underside of scratchplate...
13. Genuine question...
I'll start. It depends on what a band is looking for. Here's an example... I'd be very hesitant to to audition as I have no touring experience. Blue
How does someone get their first touring experience, presuming they've not come up through the "originals band schlepping round the country/state in a beat up van" career route?
14. Oh yeah, and Colin Edwin from Porcupine Tree too.
15. Saw the late Randy Coven playing with the Norwegian prog band Ark about 10 or so years ago. Rocked out on fretless all night - sounded amazing. Worth checking out...
16. That configuration has a really great look to it. Nicely proportioned - which given how far the pickup has moved is a real surprise. Nice!
17.
Listening. Well IMO thats one of the best starts. Its whats its all about. Its innocent, and thats where i think music always comes from.
Funny, as I was clicking the link I was thinking... "Hmm, for me it would be listening." I guess we hear each other!
18. Strikes me as being a bit of over engineering for the sake of it. For many years (until I got a Pedaltrain and stuck a Fuel Tank on it a year or so ago) I got on perfectly well using either a Boss TU or Polytune pedal and a daisy chain cable from the 9v out. Sure, won't easily power heavy draw and 18v pedals but if you have a few of those on the board then you probably want to be looking a a better power supply than those ones...
19. I use the Lehle 3@1 pedal to do exactly what you are describing. Live I used a Custom and a Pro Series Wal which had slightly different outputs. The Lehle allows you to reduce the hotter signals to match the least powerful. Switching is silent and it's electronically transparent with no loading across the channels. Bomb proof construction. Quality bit of kit! Strange to say about a line switcher but I love that pedal! https://www.bax-shop.co.uk/signal-splitter-router/lehle-3at1-sgos-switch-pedal?gclid=Cj0KEQiAy53DBRCo4en29Zvcla0BEiQAVIDccyUkqgtwZkdsHurQWZvkzYXpto4nWH8-wumXyUq8Sc8aAjWh8P8HAQ
20. Two more fave covers I forgot earlier... http://youtu.be/lcWVL4B-4pI http://youtu.be/cSo9CC2wKVI Both significantly better than the originals... And it's a bit cheesy but I love this version of this song too. Great bass from Mr Murray... http://youtu.be/ub8rPHBXd20
21. Well, I think that Bubinga's Maruzawotzit would be the one for me. Lovely looking bass... if only that was a rosewood fingerboard. Really nice. Mind you, Norwood's Sandberg runs it a close second... maple board too, though.
22.
. Now that was Cooler than an Eskimos lunch box,
Isn't it just. And want to see a photo of who I really singing, rather than just miming for the video? I tell no lie... Winchester's finest... Jon Allen!
23. My votes go to... http://youtu.be/YU12FrWWVqA http://youtu.be/vNc5o9TU0t0 And http://youtu.be/9zq4MrctxZM
24.
I'm not sure where the term fiddle originates, I suspect it's a more modern term (late18th century plus) but the double bass comes from a slightly different lineage to the violin family of instruments of which the cello is the bass.
That got me intrigued... a bit of research suggests fiddle comes from some old English and Germanic... possibly/probably travelling from the same etymological root as the more classical music viol... and it looks like to fiddle (about) came from the actions of playing fiddle rather than vice versa...
fiddle (n.) "stringed musical instrument, violin," late 14c., fedele, fydyll, fidel, earlier fithele, from Old English fiðele "fiddle," which is related to Old Norse fiðla, Middle Dutch vedele, Dutch vedel, Old High German fidula, German Fiedel "a fiddle;" all of uncertain origin. The usual suggestion, based on resemblance in sound and sense, is that it is from Medieval Latin vitula "stringed instrument" (source of Old French viole, Italian viola), which perhaps is related to Latin vitularia "celebrate joyfully," from Vitula, Roman goddess of joy and victory, who probably, like her name, originated among the Sabines [Klein, Barnhart]. Unless the Medieval Latin word is from the Germanic ones. FIDDLE, n. An instrument to tickle human ears by friction of a horse's tail on the entrails of a cat. [Ambrose Bierce, "The Cynic's Word Book," 1906] Fiddle has been relegated to colloquial usage by its more proper cousin, violin, a process encouraged by phraseology such as fiddlesticks (1620s), contemptuous nonsense word fiddle-de-dee (1784), and fiddle-faddle. Century Dictionary reports that fiddle "in popular use carries with it a suggestion of contempt and ridicule." Fit as a fiddle is from 1610s. fiddle (v.) late 14c., "play upon a fiddle," from fiddle (n.); the figurative sense of "to act nervously, make idle movements, move the hands or something held in them in an idle, ineffective way" is from 1520s. Related: Fiddled; fiddling.
