1.
Wow, that's some careful and scary routing on the neck heel!
says the guy who routed out a control cavity cover from this thing
2. I've also started glueing up the wings, then I realized I hadnt thought about side marker dots... hmm... drilling for those will be more of a challenge with the wings getting in the way
3. This project is picking up steam again. First off, did some work on the body/neck join Babysteps with the router ... and started sanding. Not done yet obviously but getting there
4.
Looking fantastic! I love my shinto rasp too
Thank you, yes they are amazing little things
5.
That top is going to look stunning..
+1 Looking forward to see this carved aswell. Demarcation veneer is the sh*t
6. Thanks! Yeah, it really is a love hate thing. The patching worked out well though so right now i Love it
7. Got started on the neck carve a while back, also glued on the back portion of the neck, but haven't really made much progress since then. Afew passes with the router to get me started Then I used the shinto (love it) to do most of the rest Picked it up for the first time in a few weeks today, clamped it together to mark out where the top "horn" will join the neck. This is the back of the neck pre-glue. Got the width done with the router and glued some wenge veneers to the edges. When I went on to flush trim the veneers I (of course, being that wenge is a bunch of splinters held together) got some tear out, so Ive been patching that up today. I will not use the router to get the patch flush
8. Thats a tough one...I think I like the second one better because it looks more like its on fire and its a little more chaotic... but you cant really go wrong either way. Its gonna be a stunner!
9. Recorded a quick demo with the bass. Multitracked the bass so its a little muddy in places. Recorded through my microcube, no eq. Main bassline - both pickups Secondary plucking - neck pickup Solo - bridge pickup Some obligatory disclaimers: 1 Im not a proffesional bass player or anything so dont expect anything too fancy 2 Some hiss in the recording, comes from my recording equipment, not the bass https://youtu.be/V8I6J1chBxc (dont know how to embed video, sorry)
10.
As if that top horn wasn't crazy enough, the positioning of the tuners is just wild! Top drawer stuff
Thank you
11. Thanks andy really means alot coming from you
12. This should be good!
13. A few more then First impressions are pretty good, its much fun to play such a small bass. Only real issue so far has been some fretbuzz on the 21st fret on the E string, not too bad.. and when am i ever going to play up there, really? Its also lacking a bit of sustain up in the dusty end... But all in all, great fun travel sized bass, which is what i was going for!
14. Those neck stringers look to be quite striking indeed
15. Looking forward to another Andybuild
16. Looks fantastic!
17. Thanks! My process is definitely learn as i go, if i get an idea mid-build i try it out and most of the time i can work my way around small problems this process may throw my way. I still consider myself a novice both when it comes to instrument making and woodworking in general so to anyone who feels like making an instrument i say go for it, its really not all that difficult. Regarding this build, i didnt have any sheilding tape handy when putting it together so i just skipped it. Im going to have to do that before calling it done. As to the 25,5" scale this was down to me wanting to make a small, ukebass type travelbass and then finding this pre-slotted fretboard on ebay. As you pointed out, the extra string length came in handy when finding a headless solution!
18. I can try to take some better pics later on! build diary is here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/273920-255-scale-4-string-bass/page__pid__3088447__st__30#entry3088447
19. Built myself a shortscale (25,5'') bass that turned headless when the headstock fell off!
20. Done and done! It plays! For now anyway... too early for victory laps, time will tell how well it stays in tune but I was able to tune it up and play it for a bit. It feels and plays rather nice, I must say Only phone cam photos for now, sorry. Might take som better pics and record a sound sample when I get home in a weeks time, thanks for watching!
21. Never enough builds🙂
22. Thanks! Got about four coats of oil on now, starting to look pretty good but gonna keep going upwards ten coats or thereabouts...
23. Ha! Thanks Andy
24. Thanks! Im using short scale strings and then the 25" scale turns them into extra long. Im not entirely sure just how floopy the strings will be but ive done som experimenting... i think itll be fine...
