1. I do use different gauges depending what I'm doing, ranging between .60 and 1.14. Definitely a different tonal quality but only a slight volume difference
2. Thanks everyone, I think I'll spend some time working on my technique and see if that makes much difference. I've also got a couple of different pick sizes so I'll experiment with that too. As others have said, due to all the variables with my bass, hands etc it's probably just going to be a case of trial and error.
3.
An EQ pedal will also give you volume control and a way to redress any severe tonal differences (say, a very deep finger tone which dissapears with a plectrum for some reason, like on my T-bird!).
This is pretty much the problem I'm having. The deeper tone disappears when I switch to playing with a pick (which I suppose is natural) but I find I drop way down in the mix.
4. When switching between using a pick and fingers during a set, how can I keep a consistent volume? I've noticed a drop in volume when switching to a pick, which I suppose make sense due to the inherent characteristics of the two different styles, but it's still inconvenient. Compressor? EQ? Boost pedal? If anyone can give me some input before I splash the cash, that'd be grand
5. I am, just Rickmansworth is a bit far flung for me to get to at the moment. Cheers mate, let me know if anything falls through, good luck
6. Cheers fellas! I'll get on them now
7. Can anyone recommend me any bass tutors in the North Wales/Cheshire/Manchester sort of area? I'm based in Wrexham, North Wales but willing to travel for the right teacher.
8. Anyone know how Patrick Paige II gets that sub/swelling effect at about 1:32 in "Gabby" by The Internet? I didn't even notice it much until I played it through my speakers the other day and was taken aback by the overwhelming fatness of it. On a side note, great band if you're into the whole Hip-Hop/Neo-Soul stuff. Great bass playing throughout their last album Ego Death, I think Thundercats brother used to be in the band. I think a few members are also ex-Odd Future too. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Liq2H5jeAE
9. Bump!
10. Now 350.
11.
Can you send a pic of the fret board close up? Was it a pro defret?
I've added a photo to the original post, hopefully it shows what you need to know. I know little of the neck, the defretting job seems to be pretty good, some of the material used to fill in the frets has spilt slightly into the grain of the fingerboard but it's not too noticeable and I actually think it looks quite nice. I don't think it's a pro defret but it appears whoever did it did a decent job. There's some wear to the board as you'd expect of a fretless instrument but nothing major, everything seems to be in good nick to me

16.
Wrexham and Leeds
Correct! forgot to mention. Travel between the two often. I think Shuker bass guitars do a reasonable price for refretting instruments!
17. I bought this bass through here in November but unexpected bills have led me to sell it, regrettably. Bound maple neck, rosewood fretboard with block inlays, I'm unsure of the origin of the neck but it's pretty comfortable. Body is from a 1989 Japanese Squier, made of walnut I believe. Body is pretty worn here and there, which I suppose is expected of a nearly 30 year old bass. Pickups are Nordstrand big splits - These sound absolutely huge. Delivery options are the same as with the Fender I've got up for sale currently: I can meet within reason but pick up is preferred. I can't get the bass couriered for a few weeks but will if absolutely necessary. Cash only, no trades thanks. This is a truly special instrument, at least to me. I can't imagine a better fretless sound than this bass. 18. Had this for nearly a year and it's been a fantastic bass. I'll probably regret selling this but I can't justify having three Jazz's right now and I need funds for my house next year. All stock as far as I know, lovely attention to detail in the relic'ing by Fender. It's currently strung with a set of flats that have been on since October and sound lovely. Bass is currently in Leeds but I travel between here, Manchester and Wrexham/Chester regularly. 19. Way Huge Pork Loin is a good soft clipping overdrive. I use it with two of my basses (one with flats, one with rounds) and it performs equally well, though differently, with each. I personally don't use any effects with flats except overdrive occasionally. Adds a bit more warmth while subtly bringing out some overtones. 'Beefs' up the tone when necessary
20. Saw him in Manchester a week or so ago, one of the best gigs I've been to in a long time. Great player in terms of technicality and musicality, fantastic performer and an impressive portfolio of work to boot. I'm not a fan of bass 'soloists' by any stretch (Wooten etc), but I think Thundercat is great. Even when he's not laying down basslines, his unique sound definitely contributes to the overall sound in a way another instrument couldn't. I'd consider it 'bass' but he does expand into different approaches to the instrument, but in a relevant and cohesive way.
21. It does indeed, such a nice instrument to play. Nicely balanced and everything sits just right under the fingers.
22. No trades please! I'm funding a purchase.
