  1. Yep, same year, 1987. Both big albums for me when I was in my teens. Agreed, ‘Kick’ still sounds fresh and punchy. I too bought the remastered ‘Hysteria’ when it came out recently and like you I thought it sounded very dated, or just very much of it’s time. Luckily the songs are so strong I can kind of live with the dense production. Interestingly the other big rock album from that year was ‘Appetite For Destruction’ which still sounds remarkably fresh and current to me. Guns n’ Roses’ organic, live sound has travelled far better than Def Leppard’s Fairlight overload.
  2. I’ve always struggled with Bob Dylan. I’ve bought and persevered with Blonde on Blonde, Highway 51 Revisited, Blood On The Tracks, all the big ones because everyone says how great he is/they are, but I just don’t get it. I recognise his influence on the type of music and artists that I’m into, and therefore his indirect influence on me, but every one of those albums did nothing for me whatsoever, and after much trying to like them they untimately found themselves in the window of Cancer Research.
  3. Work and running around after two young children has a big impact on ‘me’ time and I rarely find time to practise at home. In fact the only time I really play these days is at rehearsals or gigs. For that reason my playing kind of hit a plateau some time ago and hasn’t really progressed since. We had our first rehearsal tonight for three weeks, since our last gig. We usually rehearse weekly but holidays mean we’ve had a break, and the World Cup means our drummer and guitarist haven’t touched their instruments since the tournament started. Luckily our next gig isn’t for a couple of weeks, we are massively rusty...
  4. This ticks all the boxes...
  5. I love The Clash and The Beatles, probably my two all time favourite bands, but I totally agree; London Calling (and The White Album for that matter) would benefit greatly from a bit of strategic pruning.
  6. There’s a podcast I listen to called The Great Albums, which I enjoy. Listening to it has helped me appreciate ‘great’ albums that I’d previously overlooked, or tried and failed to appreciate at an earlier date. If you can get past the two hosts’ apparent lack of accurate knowledge of anything beyond the Mexican border it’s actually quite a good listen.
  7. Pink Floyd have never appealed to me generally to be honest, save for the odd song.
  8. ...and finally from me this modern summer gem. Evocative, sad nostalgia, yearning for innocent summers past.Excellent.
  9. More childhood summer memories for me with this one. I still think this is a terrific, ambitious pop record now.
  10. As a boy this song always just felt like summer. As a teen I understood what it was about. As an adult I wonder how Bobby Goldsboro kept a straight face singing some of those lyrics.
  11. Astral Weeks Dark Side Of The Moon Blood On The Tracks Pet Sounds I've tried, believe me I’ve tried, but I’m unable to find anything to enjoy in these frequently lauded albums (with the exception of God Only Knows on the latter). Incidentally, Grace is one of my all time favourites.
  12. I can’t. My contribution to the celebrity pisspot challenge is Justin Hawkins from The Darkness when I saw Muse at the O2.
  13. ...none of that belt sander nonsense. http://bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Hofner_1963_Violin_Relic.html Nice job, Hofner.
  14. I stumbled across this earlier, never heard this version before. Holy moly...
  15. I’m back in a Neko Case phase. I think she’s wonderful, what a voice.
  16. I remember seeing them perform this on Later... several years ago and was blown away. It’s on YouTube I think, worth checking out.
  17. 1. ✔️ 2. ✔️ I hate jamming. I don’t really like rehearsing but recognise it as necessary. I’m in a band for one reason and one reason alone - to play gigs.
  18. Tone up all the way on my Ps and Js when played fingerstyle, tone rolled off slightly (volume too) with a pick.
  19. Updated on this, having lived with the bass for a few weeks: it’s now wearing flatwounds, which feel and sound excellent. It’s completely the wrong sound for my band so I’ve not gigged it yet, as I’d planned, but I have a project in mind which might or might’nt happen, for which it’d be perfect. Great for noodling around at home to old Motown tunes too, what fun!
  20. I fail to see how it’s even possible to offer a bass at that price, other than stock clearance. £100 yes, £50 no.
